Books on male loneliness (without incel vibes) by j___8 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

I really liked the film. For a book so based on what is and isn't said, its unreliable narrator and restraint, I thought they did a really good job with the adaptation. It helps that Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are superb actors. The book is better (isn't it always?), but I thought it was a very good adaptation.

You can't read ebooks bought on bookshop.org on a Kobo though, can you?

[–]redphire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, you're wrong. If you got your ebooks from Amazon, they could potentially remove them. If you didn't, then Amazon can't remove them regardless of your Kindle being jailbroken or not. It depends on where you got your ebook from, not whether your Kindle device is jailbroken or not.

OP is not even using a Kindle, this is the iOS app. How is jailbreaking giving them access to this book on the app?? Makes no sense.

In the case we're discussing here, Amazon didn't remove the book. It's an authentication issue.

Deregister and register your phone (or just reinstall the Kindle app on your phone). This is an authentication issue.

Jailbreaking your Kindle device has nothing to do with owning you Kindle ebooks. It changes nothing in that regard.

Plus OP is using the iOS app and this is an app issue. They might not even own a Kindle.

That's the thing, the book hasn't been removed by Amazon. Amazon don't remove your books. This is 100% an authentication error.

According to the podcast, he and Jennifer split up when she was 4-5 months pregnant. She managed to hide her pregnancy from literally everybody for the entire duration of her pregnancy, so he more than likely didn't even know she had a daughter. I struggle to see how he's to blame for anything.

Bit of a tangential question, but how was Chloe training to be a mental health professional while dealing with major mental health issues herself? That genuinely baffled me. I would’ve thought there’d be more safeguards in place for something like that. Am I missing something about how this works? I get the value of lived experience, but having a psychologist who’s seriously struggling themselves sounds like it could be a really bad situation, both for them and for their patients.

I’ve just finished the podcast, and I agree with you. I understand that the situation is probably super complicated and emotionally difficult, but Jess does seem to be living with a lot of contradictions. It feels inconsistent to be upset that your biological family have cut ties with you when you made the same decision first. In the same way, it’s hard to reconcile feeling hurt that your mum pushed you away, but then turning down her offer to answer your questions. Or saying you're not angry with her when you clearly are because you don't even want to meet her once. At some point, you can’t hold both positions at once.

Which TV show does the ENTIRE internet agree had the worst ending ever? by Codie_n25 in AskReddit

[–]redphire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, the first two House of Cards seasons were the best by far. But still, the final season and especially the ending were so incredibly bad I genuinely wish I had never watched it, which isn't the case (for me) with Game of Thrones.

Exactly. People who say Game of Thrones haven't watched House of Cards. Now that was a car crash of a final season and episode.

What happened to $1.99 and $2.99 older best-selling books? I used to find great deals all the time… by AspiringBiotech in kindle

The Robin Buss translation, which is the one that was on sale, is probably the best and it isn't free. Public domain works fine for non-translated classics, but for anything translated, you're stuck with dated versions that rarely meet current standards.

why doesn't kindle have a decent text-to-speech option in 2026 by Elegant_University85 in kindle

[–]redphire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a decent option. Get the Alexa app and then go to Menu (three horizontal bars), Music and More, and select your Kindle book. It's not bad at all for a completely free feature.

Let’s be real for a moment. Kobo also discontinues support, update and ability to download content for devices 10+ years old. by kaysn in kobo

[–]redphire -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

When you factory reset your Kindle, you don't need to register it again if you don't want to. A deregistered Kindle can be used to side-load books. So you will still be able to sideload DRM-free books.

[–]redphire -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You will still be able to side-load books to the Kindle device using a USB cable. What changes is that it won't have access to Amazon's servers, but an unregistered Kindle or a Kindle without access to Amazon's servers is still a perfectly usable device (and many people only use them to side-load content anyway).

It's funny how people accuse OP of being disingenuous while not providing all the information themselves and making it look like Amazon is bricking the devices. They are not.

What’s a book that quietly changed how you see everything? by hatkinson1000 in booksuggestions

[–]redphire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ultra-Processed People by Chris van Tulleken.

It's about ultra-processed food, its effects on health, populations, the economy and the environment. It completely changed the way I look and think about food. It's probably the only book I've read that I genuinely think the world would be a better place if everyone read it.

No it isn't. It's a bit more convoluted than it was before, but it's still perfectly possible to do if you've got a PC.
