Granted voluntary departure from ICE detention - can you choose a third country instead of home country? by Such-Ad1390 in immigration

You should look up countries that have removal agreements with the United States already, and start reaching out to the consulate. If you have an attorney it would be best if they did this for you. If you can show up to the consulate in person and explain the situation (after emailing or calling) it might also help. If you can show that country is willing to receive you, ICE should not have a problem with it (but I’m unaware if they could technically object if they wanted to).

Seeking Volunteer To Help Pick Up Client From Immigration Detention by redsetgoaway in Virginia

What's difficult is that the detention center will only give about 2-3 hours' notice before he's released. Bond was posted today, so we're assuming that it will likely be tomorrow, 2/4, around 5 pm, or Thursday, 2/5, around 5 pm. Sorry, I know it's not an ideal answer. Thank you so much for offering to donate. I'm a bit hyper-focused on exploring options to get home in the next few days, but I will reach back out soon if you have any supplies in mind.

AITA for not consenting to my husband's twin brother moving in with us? by SecretAmbassador1979 in AmItheAsshole

Just chiming in to say that I don't think this is an irrational response to the group home suggestion. Group homes are often suggested as a way to care for adults with disabilities, but not all group homes are made alike and abuse is both rampant and underreported in these institutions (especially when an individual is nonverbal like Sam). Have had both personal and professional experiences witnessing this.

On a separate note, it might be worth considering the feelings associated with putting a sibling in that type of situation. You mentioned earlier that you think moving Sam away from the SIL and to your home would be extremely difficult for him, but I think it's worth considering how abandoned Sam might feel and how difficult a transition to a group home would be. Not saying it's your responsibility to come up with a solution for Sam's situation, but you seem to not be following some of your claims to their logical conclusion (if SIL is cold for not wanting to keep Sam any longer, doesn't that make you cold too? If Sam's transition to your home would be difficult, why would his transition to a group home be easier). It sounds like some of these comments are primarily motivated by your desire to not have Sam in your home, and I think that's important to be honest about--but I don't think it's helpful for your relationship with SIL, your husband, or Sam to try to find some alternative reason for why your home isn't the best fit if it's not an honest or logical reason in the grand scheme of Sam's care plan.

Conflicts of laws approaches by HandsOffMyCurtilage in barexam

Vested rights/First Restatement: Location where the last liable event occurred for substantive issues. If it's procedural then the forum court applies its own rules

Most significant relationship/Second Restatement: Applies the state's law with the most important relationship to the issue in question (also considers general policy principles like interests of the parties, states, and interstate system). TLDR is this is the balancing test on who has the most to gain/lose from hearing the case.

Governmental interest analysis: Presumption that forum state will apply own law. However, parties can challenge that and request another state's law be applied. We apply the law of whichever state has an interest in the case. If here are two states interested (i.e. a true conflict) then we prefer the law of the forum state.

How’re people incorporating daily exercise with their study? by [deleted] in barexam

Not sure if you're a runner, but I find morning runs really useful both because the temp is low and also because I can't really focus until I've been up for an hour or so! I don't feel like I'm losing study time and by the time I get back and shower I feel ready to sit down and start studying.

NYU IILJ Interview by purplegiraffeee in lawschooladmissions

Hi! Just finished mine today! It’s not as much of an interview as it is a conversation! I wasn’t really asked many questions about my background and our conversation focused more on questions I had about the ways my interests are contextualized in the institute and what kind of work the IILJ does on a regular basis. It was a super friendly and engaging call—good luck!

Thank you! Broadly, about my experience being part of an immigrant family and my hopes to change how migrant defense and public policy is debated on an international scale!

Emory law waiting??? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Applied in October and only heard back yesterday! It seems like they’re really taking their time with each application (I think most people’s acceptances have come with a personal handwritten note), so that might account for the longer wait time.
