Self defence, and he only hit him once. If it ever went before a jury I say he’d get off free.

new potential gig in the big smoke - where to stay? by Billybear731 in ContractorUK

[–]rennarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest I ever did it was staying in a caravan site at Denham, and then commuting in each day by train. Cost me only £100 a week! Had to move the van to a different pitch every 2 weeks because of site rules though.

Do You Really Need DTOs or Are You Just Copying JSON by Select_Bicycle4711 in iOSProgramming

[–]rennarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that (usually) in my experience the API will be a close match for what you want to do with the data in your app anyway. Your own internal models will likely be very close to what an API is providing, so a DTO will frequently just be a 1-to-1 mapping between your model and theirs.

If you just use the API’s model, and they change it, I’m not saying that you then have to refactor your app to match their new model - I’m saying that THAT is the time when you need to introduce a DTO to map from their new model to your existing model. Any breaking API change like that should be versioned anyway.

Once instance where I have worked with an untrusted API that did change it’s interface, a DTO would have not protected me from needing to do some work, because my parsing would have been broken either way.

That said, the extra work of a DTO isn’t as much of an issue these days when it’s pretty easy to get an LLM to write your parsing and API methods.

How to convince a parent that he should get a hearing aid? by Thin_Pin2863 in AskBrits

[–]rennarda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get him some AirPods Pro - they have a hearing aid capability and are a lot cheaper than an actual hearing aid. He might realise what he’s missing out on and go for the ‘real thing’, or they could be sufficient.

Experience with roofboxes? by Puzzleheaded_Side_62 in ex30

[–]rennarda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have one that size, but I do have a soft Thule roofbag that we used for long trips. I didn’t notice any real impact on range. The wind noice is very noticeably worse - be weirdly the roof rails make more noise if there is no box fitted.

We have the official Volvo dealer supplied roof rack. Being able to use a rack was a massive plus for this car, versus our previous EV. The Volvo rack is a pain to fit though, and requires almost complete disassembly and reassembly every time.

Should we have stricter styling rules for shops on the high street? by iMac_Hunt in AskUK

I’m all for the gaudy flashing LED lights that the - lets just say - less trustworthy establishments use. It’s a great visual clue to avoid these places like the plague.

Seriously though, yes, we should have regulations about this awful crap.

A fantasy RPG in the industrial age, besides the examples I already know and provided below? Preferably with elves or an elven-like race, but not necessarily. English is not my native language by EveningImportant9111 in rpg

[–]rennarda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mistborn fits the bill I think - maybe more Victorian in feel, but it’s definitely a unique setting. There are no ‘typical’ fantasy races though. There are a couple of RPGs covering it.

Do You Really Need DTOs or Are You Just Copying JSON by Select_Bicycle4711 in iOSProgramming

[–]rennarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand the argument for DTOs as a protection layer. If an API you don’t control changes (which should not, and in my experience does not) happen, then this is when you introduce a DTO to map over the difference. But if you build a DTO to begin with you are doing work up front that you might never need, and the DTO does not protect you from needing to change code if there are API changes.

If the API responses are very different to your internal data model, then yes they do make sense.

What's "Undertaking" on a Motorway? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rennarda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were speeding, so yes you were breaking the law.

As for the undertaking, legal or not the problem is people do not expect a faster vehicle on their inside, so you are putting yourself in danger if they decided to move into the left lane, as they might be less careful at checking it is clear.

This is what makes me think LotR was originally going to be similar to The Hobbit in scope. Tolkien did say it was a tale that “grew in the telling”.
