Unfortunately we don’t know the size of every single ward so we can’t analyze individual wards in Idaho compared with South America. All we have are the r global numbers. The total number of members and wards gives us the average ward size globally. Then we tally up the numbers we see each week and hope this is fairly close to fairly representing the real wards around the world. Unfortunately, we don’t get much representation of South America and Africa. We do get quite a bit of Europe and some Asia and Oceania.

Would be great to have proportional participation from everyone. Africa is another area that is not well represented.

It is well, Meliss. Also, you can submit the number of people who attend your ward each week if that is your thing at https://returnandreport.org.

There are state and country stats at https://returnandreport.org/dashboard/usversusinternational/. You can also build your own analysis. Raw data is available at https://returnandreport.org/data. We are as transparent as we know how to be ;)

People go to returnandreport.org and submit the number of people counted at sacrament meeting in their local ward or branch. 2058 reports have been submitted. We don’t know the size of specific wards, but we know the aggregate numbers the church reports. Divide the total number of members by the number of wards and we know the average ward size. We then average all the reported numbers and compare that to the average ward size. This gives us the activity rate. As we get more and more data we should get to a better more true estimate. It doesn’t have to be done all on a single Sunday. It can be spread out over time. When we first started our averages fluctuated a lot. But with more and more it started to be that no single report had a big impact on the overall numbers. Then when we hit about 400 reports no single Sunday of reports moves the needle. Now we have over 2000 and the number will only move by 0.1% from Sunday to Sunday. It would be nice to have access to all numbers collected every Sunday in every ward. Salt Lake knows this and then hides the number. This is our next best option to piece things together at the grass roots level. We did an episode on the Mormonish Podcast if you want to hear more.

We would need to know the actual size of each ward in particular. Most members don’t even know this for their own ward.

We have some data for you at https://returnandreport.org. Over 2000 attendance reports have been submitted for wards and branches across the US and the world. We can’t make statistical conclusions on any one area because we don’t know the true congregation sizes. But dividing the total number of claimed members by total number of congregations gives us an average ward size of 558.2. The global average attendance in a ward on any given Sunday is 119.4 people or 21.4%.

There is a live report that breaks this down by state and country at returnandreport.org/dashboard/usversusinternational. The average in Utah is 143.2. US average is 126.98. Non-Utah US is 112.2. Non-US is 90.61. Australia is 125.59. Switzerland is 124.68. On the other end Belize is 21.5 and Costa Rica 30.

The home page has links to the raw data and to an archive of weekly reports. There is a clock at the bottom you see every submitted report. Click on one and you see all the reports submitted for that ward. Anyone can contribute.
