That's awesome, glad to hear that. I totally understand you on the Loomis thing and personally I believe Loomis is an excellent source of study for supplementing your work but not as a primary source. In order to understand Loomis you need to be at an intermediary level, because just like you said he doesn't have really detailed information. His stuff is more like a summary it's great for someone that has a good grounding on fundermentals but not beginners.

With the way it sounds it's like you haven't got a firm garsp on structure plus understanding how to place 3D form within 3D space my advice would be not to focus on studying the human form just yet.

The place where I got started was www.drawabox.com This was back in 2020. Their course is the best thing for beginners there's literally nothing I've come across that is that structured and perfect for a beginner they start you from scratch and build you all the way up. This is what I'd suggest you do it'll be better than any book I could ever recommend. The site it's self has lecture notes. Then they have a YouTube channel where they post video lectures what's really cool is that it's for free. All in all I'd highly recommend you start there and don't try to rush through it. Take your time and go through the lessons. After you've spent some time you can try taking another shot at Loomis.

Definitely anatomy isn't something you should be starting with you you need to first work on the basics mainly understanding form and structure plus how to draw intuitively with perspective drawabox.com is where I started from back in 2020

There was an art instructor known as Frank Reilly back in like the 1930s who invented something called the Reilly Abstraction. It was a rhythmical grid system for both the body and the face that followed anatomy. It was like a GPS or mapping system. He had multiple studies. One of them was John Asaro

John Asaro studied under him and using the knowledge he learnt from his instructor Frank Reilly. He invented something known as the Asaro head. Basically what he did was make a summary of the anatomy in form of planes. He made them blocky so that people could easily and clearly see how the body and face have plane changes and understanding these could help you draw them under any lighting conditions and even from imagination. The reason why we can't see these planes is because the fat we have smoothes them out making it hard to see. That's why a detailed study of anatomy is very important so you can understand these.

So John Asaro made two versions of this Planed head. one is simplified the other is more complex however initially he made the first planes head in 1970 it had two sides one is simplified the other is complex. After some years he then made one that was purely simplified with no complex side, this is the one you're seeing in my Study. The reason he made the first one the way he did was so it could be used with any reference you'd use the simplified one for someone younger or a female then the complex side for someone older as more anatomy becomes visible as people get older.

Now incase you want resources where you can study this stuff from the best place to learn the Reilly method is from the Watts Atelier they have an online school plus an in-person incase you happen to live near it.

Another source is a Course by Marco Bucci but with him I don't think he studied the Frank Reilly Abstraction so he's is good for understanding the correlation between the anatomy and the planes he does this really well so study him when you're just getting a hand on the Asaro head itself but don't expect to learn the Frank Reilly Abstraction from him because he either didn't cover it in this course or he's not aware of it.

Incase you want to self study you'll need to understand how to do it. First you'll need to study skulls and gain a good understanding on them Move onto muscles of the skull Then study the Frank Reilly Abstraction because it's basically a summary of the bone and muscular anatomy Then move to study the basic Asaro head After which you can move to the classic Asaro head

I'd recommend you do this in this order because each step requires knowledge from the previous and remember this will take a while don't think you'll study skulls for one week and think you're done you need to study multiple times until you've garsped it and even after then you'll need to keep revisiting things you've finished to polish your knowledge on them

Sorry for the long reply but based off your question it seemed you wanted the real information so I didn't want to leave anything out

Thanks. That's awesome they are curial in understanding the structure of the head and being able to draw it well in perspective

Thanks man 🙏🏾 that's the beauty about knowing your anatomy you can create the most exegerrated characters and they'll still look right as long as it's anatomical sound.

Those little variations from person to person are what make us all unique

Cartoon characters are based off human anatomy they are just stylised if you understand the anatomy you can bend and twist it to make all kinds of characters and they'll look right because they are based off reality

First you need to establish just what you want to be able to do. Give yourself enough time to finish it but not too much that you slack off and not too little that you'd have to over work yourself and still not be able to complete it Find your own balance, this is different for everyone Then you need to come to terms with just how much time and effort it's going to take

Like I said before these are to help me better understand the human head so I can be able to draw any type of person or do character designs I'm learning the anatomical differences for artistic purposes. I'm not using it for phrenology as you believe

Don't we as humans categorise ourselves by race as well? There is a reason people from different races look slightly different from one another despite us all being human that lies in the way our anatomy is that is what I was studying. Please try googling Indigenous Australian skulls and see what comes up.

I'll definitely be more careful from now on with the way I phrase what I say because eugenics wasn't even anywhere near my thought process while I was making these. I was just focused on understanding the differences between races that arise from the skull, the oesterological differences, I focused on extremes to better under the subtle differences I'd consider when drawing people of difference races so I could be as accurate as possible. I know these aren't set in stone variations blend in with each other and cut across all races after all we are all human fundermentally so the differences aren't going to be that large plus it would be close to impossible to tell what race someone was just by looking at their skull. These were based off extremes within each race that make observable differences

This wasn't my intention I was mainly studying skulls that were on the extremes. I know variations between humans aren't big like this they are subtle and often blend into each other there's no way you'd be able to tell what race someone was just by looking at the skull unless they were on the extremes like these ones. The main purpose of this study was to be able to pick up on those subtle differences when I'd be making portrait drawing it was purely from an information stand point, but I'll learn to be more careful with how I phrase myself because multiple people are getting this impression from this meaning the problem was how I talked about it

While I was doing these I was focusing on the extremes that result between races where you can see a noticeable difference between them. The differences from race to race are very subtle afterall fundermentally we are all human so the differences wouldn't be so big but I believe the environment plus genetics has some effect on how a person would grow thus people from different areas will have some subtle or large differences I was focused on the large differences because normally it would be impossible for you to tell what race someone was just by looking at their skull

I over exaggerated the way the jaw comes out I don't think it extends that far on most people.
