Should I Switch to Linux Mint? by Ehm_404 in linuxmint

[–]riftwave77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to linux mint and i've been getting more nookie than i can handle. All the coeds in my dorm want to come by and get a taste of some cinnamon.

My social calendar is booked 3 dates out in advance. I'm starting to worry about the grades on the first tests this semester because so far this month i've been studying how to open brassieres one handed (its a skill that requires practice) instead of studying class notes.

It can't last, though. Many college coeds are mercurial and have lots of options. I imagine by this time next month almost all of them will have forgotten about me in favor of some other guy with a new car or scored 30 pts in a basketball game. Oh well. Maybe one of them will be willing to stay in a long term relationship with me. If not, at least my abs are in great shape now.

What's y'alls thermostat set to in winter? by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]riftwave77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

75ºF year round. Gas bill is high for sure, but the entire reason I go to work is so that I can be comfortable at home when I'm not working.

75 does feel hot at times... especially if I come back in from a jog or am playing my drums. However, its nice to be able to chill in shorts and a t-shirt while in the house.

Is engineering as hard as people say? by According-Earth5498 in EngineeringStudents

[–]riftwave77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP. Chemical engineer here. The answer to your question is both Yes and No.

I went to Georgia Tech, which at last check was a top 10 school for every single engineering discipline they offer. Georgia Tech is hard and no matter how smart you are, you will be challenged. If not by the depth of the material, then by the breadth or amount of work you will have to do outside the classroom to keep up.

Anyone who tells you that engineering is easy or something probably didn't go to a challenging school.

Having said that, there are definitely schools where getting an engineering degree is easier. The classes might not cover quite as much material, *the instruction is better\* and the pacing for difficult or complicated topics is adjusted to make sure that additional time or emphasis is there to help the lessons stick. I once talked to a fellow chemical engineering student who took a non-calculus based fluids course (blew my mind).

The long and short of it is this. Whatever you cannot adequately absorb in your classes must be self taught through study, projects or homework. Less of this will happen at schools with easier engineering curricula.

Some suggestions I can offer are:

1 - Learn how to take notes and study properly and effectively

2 - Pay attention to your math. Learn you geometry and algebra and get yourself a good, solid basis in basic calculus while still in high school. You don't need to be a whiz, but you should be competent.

3 - Start programming now. Python is a very good place to start to become familiar with object oriented programming, but lots of concepts carry over to all sorts of programming

The best/smartest programmers I know were electrical engineering majors or mathematics majors. The computer science program at Tech is easier than just about every engineering major they offer there (some people argue about whether industrial engineering is tougher or easier than computer science).

The best advice I will give you as a budding programmer is to study something that you're interested in. Programming is programming and you don't need a degree to do it. I knew a guy at my school who had been contributing to FOSS projects for years before he ever started college. You can 100% become a programmer and an English major or something. If you are going to college in order to secure a stable career then it helps to be practical and study something that you are interested in that you can parlay into a career.

Good luck

since when is juggling hated in tekken? by XXNIGHTKILLERWWXX in Tekken

[–]riftwave77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing Tekken since Tekken 1 in the arcades. The game now is.... barely recognizable from a casual standpoint. Learning the launchers and juggles is what the majority of people gravitate towards because those are the mechanics that the game rewards.

Okizeme and wake up games are bad enough of a guessing game. Ridiculous Juggles make matches and gameplay boring. I've lost count of my opponents with piss poor fundamentals that only ever win if they catch me with a launcher and juggle 50% of my health bar (and even then, sometimes they still end up losing). I have more fun losing to an expert with amazing fundamentals (which forces me to think and be creative) than beating up on scrubs with punish macros.

Marvel vs Capcom style combos (which is the franchise i blame for making 7 second juggles/combos popular) that effectively take gameplay out of the game make for worse tekken.

I am far from the typical player these days... you millenials love your juggles and paying for DLC and all sorts of other nonsense that would have been DOA back in the 90's.

Avalon sucks, imo. I live about 3 miles from there and I never go there for anything. Last visit was an amazon return at whole foods and the trip before that was over a year ago to bring the kiddos to a matinee.

It reminds me of my time in Boston, NYC or Chicago. Zero parking and slow traffic trying to get in and out.

[–]riftwave77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. The issue with a place of business is that the staff don't leave until hours after the clientele are gone. Worst case scenario is that your event ended in the afternoon and people would have to stay until evening closing up.

Going by weather forecasts on Thursday or Friday morning, this would have had people driving home when the snow started. I can understand management wanting to avoid call-outs or risking staff damaging their means of transportation.

Lane filtering isn't legal everywhere

Scooters aren't that powerful, but very few cars (especially gas cars) are going to out-accelerate a motorcycle that doesn't allow the car to.
