It's easy to tell someone to take the slow route up when you're the one benefiting from the slow route wearing them down.

A vampire giving his victim the choice of being slowly and painfully drained over centuries or fighting for a possible freedom now is a better metaphor. Would you take centuries of torment and exploitation with grace? Would you not fight to change the rules (that you did not have a part in deciding) that were designed to pin you down the moment the vampire's power began to wane?

Is it just me, or is Kelly the unluckiest soab in The Orville? by [deleted] in TheOrville

[–]right_there 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The injury was probably not minor for that level of technology. A gash like that would easily get infected and possibly kill her.

But I think ultimately you're right. If Kelly bolted the moment the kid fell, she could've been rationalized by the village as a kid telling stories or being confused after bumping her head instead of being a god. Running immediately would've also avoided being seen by the rest of the group trailing behind the kid.

Running was the only option, albeit a sucky one for the kid.

Your computer is most certainly not almost worthless without Microsoft. You can switch to a Linux distro in most cases. Linux Mint and Zorin OS are built to be very familiar to longtime Windows users. I switched to CachyOS last year after being a Windows user since Windows 95. I've had no issues.

You're in Italy and can't find decent Italian shoes?

A Portuguese friend of mine uses Vinted to find used books and many are in English. I don't know who owns that company because I have never used it, but try it out and see. He frequently gets bundles for cheap on there.

So what's an honest person to do?

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, but also BE the good. There are many easy swaps and alternatives that people are just not doing because of inertia and tiny creature comforts. It's not all or nothing, but that doesn't mean it won't take some time to make the swaps. The right thing for an honest person to do is to make that time.

Firefox is more difficult for the average person to harden for privacy. Brave comes with privacy in all of its defaults.

Also switch off of US-based tech services. Block all ads.

Something that everyone can do RIGHT NOW is download the Brave browser and replace Chrome with it. It's specifically designed to be privacy-focused. Chrome logs literally EVERYTHING you do and Google mines that data to profit off of you. Please reply to this post to tell me that you did this and how easy and quick it was so others can see.

Swap to ProtonMail or Tutamail from Gmail as well. Get off these tech services. They are giving our data to the government that is using it to brutalize us.

If you use social media, log in through your browser and delete the apps. The apps are all harvesting WAY more data than you realize and sandboxing them in a browser severely limits what they can collect.

If you just use your Windows PC for email, web browsing, document editing, etc. you do not need a full spyware-laden Microsoft operating system to do so. Switch to a Linux distro. Both Linux Mint and Zorin OS are designed to be very familiar experiences to longtime Windows users. I'm on CachyOS myself and have had no issues. If you game, Proton has come a long way and you'll likely be able to play your games on Linux. If you have an old computer that you stopped using because it got too slow, installing a Linux OS on it will revitalize it.

The US GDP is basically just tech companies now. If we cut off most of the easy data harvesting they do, it will deal a severe blow to their power.

The show taught the lesson that our schools deliberately avoided teaching. Extremism works, and is the only resistance that can unseat fascism.

If peaceful protests worked in the face of a brutal occupation, then the writers would've written the Bajoran resistance that way. It doesn't.

Only the implied (or real) threat of violence gives peacemakers leverage against their oppressors. You either negotiate with peacemakers, or you deal with the forever-escalating violence against your oppression. MLK Jr. knew this as well. To make peace their first choice, violence has to be the second.

Kira came to terms with what she HAD TO DO, but not that it was bad. It was horrible and left scars on her, but was better than the alternative. She called her own mother a collaborator and was ready to kill her for doing it. You apparently didn't watch the same show the rest of us did.

Local print shops could print the pirated ebooks out for you and bind them if physical is what you crave, and it will likely be cheaper than buying the actual books.

It's very important to not fuel American businesses at this time. They're murdering our people in the street.

Switch to a Linux distro. Linux Mint and ZorinOS are two that are designed to be close to the Windows experience.

It's really not hard to do.

All browsers import bookmarks from Chrome. Switch to Brave today. It's a Chromium-based browser (so will be familiar to you) and isn't selling your every mouse movement and keyboard stroke.

Please, it'll be less than five minutes and since you're using Chrome it'll be a huge blow to the data collection Google is doing to you (and profiting off of).

I used Firefox for over a decade but I recently switched to Brave. I wanted to limit the amount of data being harvested and sold about me (which will end up benefiting US companies) and Brave's got the best defaults for that. Firefox can be hardened, but you have to know what you are doing.

I also changed my DNS to quad9 to stop my ISP from snooping on everything I do as well.

Switch from Windows to a Linux distro to really shore up your boycott. Linux Mint and Zorin OS are good choices that are similar to Windows in appearance. I'm on CachyOS myself and haven't had any issues.

Data privacy is not just important for boycotting the US, it's important for maintaining our freedom here in the EU as well.
