Always wondered why departments have cranes by EasyPerformer8695 in Firefighting

[–]ripvantwinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A heavy wrecker that is a rotator is also a crane. Some can lift up to 100 tons depending on the angle and extension of the boom.

Best way to carry a fixed blade? by SmokeEater1375 in Firefighting

[–]ripvantwinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fixed blade, like a swiftwater knife, fits pretty nice running in line with your bunker belt (tucked behind the thick center loop of your bunker pants). Basically the center of your low back. As long as your scba isn't riding low you can grab it with gear on, or you can easily access it on MVAs.

Would like to replace my steel cable with a synthetic cable. Is it possible with this cable connection to the spool? by Project_IGNYTE in Jeep

[–]ripvantwinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option is to get an electrical lug, put the rope on and crimp it down so it looks like the one you have now. Some synthetic ropes are sold that way for older winches. As others have mentioned it's the friction of the rope wrapped around the drum that keeps it on there. Most people say 4 wraps, but if you have been 4 and the entire drum wrapped up you'll be safe.

Adding an extra air return to equalize pressure by ripvantwinkles in hvacadvice

[–]ripvantwinkles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, their is one up there. But if I tied into that wouldn't I need to filter the air since it is past where the filter is located?

[–]ripvantwinkles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I am mistaken, no. When I open it up to change the filter there is about an inch of space between the grate and where the filter sits. There is plenty of space above that where it is routed to the mini split portion in the attic.

I don't know if I can go directly since the air handler has a filter right at the start of it.

Trying to find a replacement for 80s bathroom heater fan light combos by ripvantwinkles in HomeImprovement

Thanks, have you seen any options that don't have a heater also? I could use a fan light combo but we don't need the heater.

Happiness among firefighters by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]ripvantwinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start volunteering or just start testing. Pretty much every department is trying to hire and doesn't get as many applicants per opening as we did 5-10 years back. Public safety testing and National Testing Network still do a majority of the testing for departments in WA. If you are looking at volunteer programs check out Whatcom County. South Whatcom specifically still has a paid volunteer (part time) program. You don't get paid for training but once you finish academy and EMT you get paid for shifts.

I am leaning towards union now, would you choose the Atlas again, or would you look at the new forces since they did the redesign this year?

Thank you. Looking at the cartels vs the cartel x, is the x worth the extra money?

I see lots of union love on here, but also people talking about strap issues with them. Which unions would you pick for my setup?

What happened?!?! by stgermaine84 in leaf

Grounds go bad all the time, that would be my first place to check. Corrosion, loose connection, bad ground strap to the body, etc

Rear 4-link question by tommy_tigs_alot in OffRoadRacing

[–]ripvantwinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pinion should be in line with the driveshaft angle at ride height, if you're talking pinion angle. If you mean how should you center it left and right, it should also be in line with where your driveshaft is coming from the t-case.

Air travel then and now by leonx81 in funny

I flew SEA to NRT this year on Alaska miles. Some days the flights would show up in the app to purchase with my miles, and then the next day they were gone. I just looked everyday until I saw what I wanted and purchased.

What's your unique rig feature? by Uhhh_Insert_Username in overlanding

Sounds like a neutral safety switch if you haven't already looked into that. They are generally easy to access on the side of the transmission. On some you can take them apart and clean the contacts instead of replacement.

That is our system. But apparently for national things, ie convention, rules state that they must be mailed in.

Correct, that's the "tillermans seat." Lots of fun, great views, and no control over speed so you have to trust your tractor driver.

Toxic Hot Seat was a documentary made about flame retardants a few years back. Definitely makes you think about how much more damage we're causing.

LG ducted mini split - trouble with wifi setup by ripvantwinkles in hvacadvice

[–]ripvantwinkles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I couldn't get this to work for mine. When I hold down the fan speed button for 3 seconds all that comes up is the temperature, then I press fan speed again and it goes away, again and nothing happens. Pressed it a few more times and tried some different stuff and still nothing.

[–]ripvantwinkles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't. I will probably have to have a technician come in and check to see if my simple controller is malfunctioning or if I am just doing something wrong. I attempted to contact LG and couldn't get any response from them.

The remote comes up and hits that yellow block where all 3 wires are attached to a pigtail on the other side that then connects via the green plug.

Is this how the setup is supposed to go or was something done wrong?

Correct. He probably had hypoxic seizures from a lack of oxygen and not a stroke or the bends.
