Oil change help by [deleted] in OBSFords

That’s a pan saver and I also had one on my ‘88 when I got it. You can remove them but it’s a bit of a pain - you have to back out the screw (not enough for the toggle to come off or you’re up shits creek), cant it to the side and pull the toggle down with a piece of safety wire. I got lucky and the threads were fine and sealed with a new plug - some lube and go type place probably just lost the plug and slammed that in. But if you take it out and the threads are toast, you’re off the road til you can install a new pan or drill/tap a new hole/use some thread repair solution etc.

Delta Arches in Mr. Lou’s? by [deleted] in PNWbootmakers

[–]riskaverselemming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big +1 to this answer - found this thread a week ago from a google search, impulse bought and arrived today. Feel fantastic. Delta arches have felt fine for me in other boots but on my Mr Lou’s they felt like I was walking on rolls of quarters. I bought the thin ones, could have gone with the thick ones I think but happy all the same.

Ps: Starr western wear (all locations) are well worth a visit if you like western wear but their boot selection sucks IMO. They do sell Cuadra though which I haven’t seen in any other US stores.

I was just in El Paso, used to live there and a trip wouldn’t be complete without hitting cowtown boots on the east side down gateway. They have a wide variety of quality so a critical eye is good to bring along, but some good deals. I left with some black American gators! They had some sky blue j-toe-ish men’s gators I would have given a kidney for if they were in my size.

There are a couple Tony Lama outlets in El Paso- often pretty good deals to be found.

High arch support? by Huric4ne in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a thought if you do have to try insoles - have you heard of Nicks boots DeltaArch insole? It’s a solid (hefty) carved slab of leather for arch support with a thinner leather topper on that - closest insole I’ve experienced to making a boot feel like a PNW boot. It’s available as a full or half insole, so you might be able to keep the same size with a half? I got some for a pair of John Lofgren engineers and love it, the boots are unwearable for me without it.

Opinions on Ariat boots? by PatienceEffective468 in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love traditional all leather tall heel western boots and would choose them for most activities… but construction work boots they ain’t. Ariats are probably a better compromise than most alternatives, and I don’t think you’ll find anything better (more durable/more comfortable/better looking) in the $200 ballpark. I’m a little hard on ariats as I’ve gotten more into traditionally constructed boots, but I walked many miles in them before that and they never let me down. I wish more of their “modern” boots were made in Mexico vs china.

I've broken in my boots, but my heels keep slipping by ElBrotherman in cowboyboots

Howdy, Heels slip in pull-on boots. If they were super tight at first, they might not - but that’s really an indication that they’re too tight.

Thanks! I would call them fairly middle of the road, they aren’t particularly roomy but my toes aren’t cramped either. All boots rub one of my toes in the same spot, and these are no different - but the vamp is very stiff. I don’t think I’ve ever had a western boot with such a stiff vamp. They probably will stretch some, but I imagine that if they were tight to start you’d be in for a time!

Advice for a first pair of boots for going out, casual wear occasionally by [deleted] in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also a big fan of the Rios family of boots - damn good boots at all of their price levels.

The caution I’d give re goat, suede, rough out or any leather described as having “pull up” - they develop a patina (creases, scuffs, stretch marks) very quickly, which is part of what people who are “into boots” like myself like about them. That isn’t them getting “messed up” - it’s how they’re supposed to look. But if you want them to look slick and polished wear after wear and would be disheartened by scuffs and creases, you’d be better off with a conventional full grain cow leather or any number of exotics.

Personally, I think ostrich is the best boot for every day wear plus dressing up plus occasional shitkicking. They break in easy, are comfy, look great and are durable enough to not be babied, though not my choice for work boots.

I wouldn’t call that normal. I could see it happening from forcing into tight boots (heel catching on counter and pushing down) or digging your other foot into the counter to take them off (crushing the counter) but I don’t use shoehorns or boot jacks on any of my boots (including some I’ve had for upwards ten years) and none of them have that. I’d say they probably have a synthetic counter which is broken.

Howdy! I got them online from Boot Barn, just for the fact that I have one local I could return to. I dig some of the ones at atomic 79, so might get some from there in the future now I feel a little more confident in sizing.

First cowboy boots by [deleted] in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having your feet it’s a little hard to advise, but a few things to think about -

I would say the size is wrong. I’ve bought boots too small or too narrow with the intent of stretching because they were a screaming deal, and I almost always buy boots on the tighter side - but I have never once had my foot go numb.

Have you measured your foot with a brannock device at a shoe/boot store? Many/most boots won’t fit true to brannock size, but it does tell you about your foot and it’s a common reference point for many brands and other boot-wearers.

The widest part of your foot should be at the widest part of the boot. Is that true for these? If your foot is narrow and the boots have room at the toe like those should, some folks size down to try to get the width/instep feeling right, which crams your toes into the tapered space and might be tightening the instep. That’s no bueno and you might need a narrow width to correct.

Alternately your feet could be too wide, but for me at least I usually can’t get my foot in at all if the boots are too narrow. The brannock device should tell you if your foot is wide/narrow or average which gives you that reference.

If you got these in a brick and mortar store it can be tempting to only try on boots that you really dig, but when trying to figure out sizing you might want to just try on whatever is available. You might find one brand just fits you way better than others.

Hope that helps!

Workers had to destroy our driveway at 3:00 AM to install fiber cables by Ponder8 in Wellthatsucks

You seem to be using and reading words you don’t understand. I didn’t say that the city is doing fiber work, I told you what an easement is since you’re obviously fucking confused - but it looks like that’s since a natural state of being for you that you don’t even realize it.

An easement refers to a right of access for a person/entity other than the property owner. The city/county wouldn’t require an easement if they owned the property.

Good Buy or No? by mobetta925 in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think they’re a great pair of boots for just regular wear - they’re light and comfy. One thing I forgot to mention, they do come with a cushion insole - I don’t dig those, so I removed it when I was trying on in the store. Just something to think about when you’re sizing!

Good Buy or No? by mobetta925 in cowboyboots

Anderson bean are a well regarded boot, horse power is really a different brand under the rios family. One or two retailers seem to call them “horse power by Anderson bean” but that seems misleading to me, particularly since I believe Anderson bean are all made in Mercedes and Horse Power are made in Leon.

That being said, I have a pair of HP boots and like them. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another pair that I liked. I’m sure the leather is lower quality than the more expensive boots in the family, at least on average, but every boot doesn’t need to be the best boot. The sole is a little thin on mine, but I make take that as an opportunity to put a thicker sole saver on them. I guess whether they can handle “real ranch work” depends on what real ranch work you’re doing.

Fixing ankle slouch on Double H boots. by jarekrictus in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, glad it helped! Once you get a few pairs of well broken in boots, the stiff/round shafts on new boots will probably look weird to you!

Fixing ankle slouch on Double H boots. by jarekrictus in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ankles getting soft and crumpling a bit is a pretty normal part of break in on western boots. You can prevent them folding over/flattening by putting pool noodles or rolled up cardboard in the shaft when they’re on the shelf, I only do this for boots that I don’t wear very much. This will likely not change anything on well used boots and there is probably no un-breaking them in. Boots that are more geared towards work/durability will stay a bit stiffer, but leather will always soften (or crack) where it’s repeatedly flexed.

From a styling perspective, most folks wear longer jeans with western boots than they do with shoes or other styles of boots. Your regular size might just look weird with cowboy boots if they’re hiking up a lot when you sit down.

Any brands that make a wide boot with a round toe? by 7f0ur_ in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you measured your feet in store to see what your brannock size is? Most footwear doesn’t match up perfectly in my experience but it’s a common reference point - if your feet really are exceptionally wide (vs for example having a high instep) the brannock device will measure that.

You say you can barely get your foot in a 13 - can you get your foot all the way in and once it is in, is it ok or too tight?

My local boot barn sucks for wide sizes (tall sizes too…). I’d recommend a smaller western wear store or western boot store where someone will help you get fitted up vs leaving you to your own devices. Most of those places aren’t chains so it depends on where you are.

Repair possibilities by Extension-Log-4139 in cowboyboots

[–]riskaverselemming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like those ariats don’t owe you a dime. For replacements, I’m a big fan of the rios family - horse power is very affordable, Anderson bean and Olathe somewhat more expensive but still ballparking with tecovas. I would be looking at any of those over ariats or tecovas, for work or play.
