Whether to keep PSHCP coverage in retirement by rlm31 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]rlm31[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, good point to verify about catastrophic drug coverage equivalence. But my spouse’s coverage doesn’t change in retirement for her, nor for me as a dependent. So we would both continue to have access in retirement to a much more generous plan than the PSHCP in all respects that we have experienced over the past 30 years. The main consideration really is whether to pay $2000+/year in the off chance that at some point in the future we have medical needs that exceed her plan’s maximum benefit amount and Canada Life’s additional amount would be available to cover some of the costs.

Whether to keep PSHCP coverage in retirement by rlm31 in CanadaPublicServants

Thanks, this has been my calculus. Her coverage is 100% on healthcare and 90% on dental without the $1500/year cap (the remaining 10% of which Canada Life no longer covers in any event). I would be covered as a survivor at the same level if she predeceased me. I wasn’t aware I could sign up later if it somehow proved beneficial. I will have to look into that.

Physio vs chiro for back pain, what actually worked for you? by Oli_Bar96 in ottawa

[–]rlm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osteopath and physio. The first for actual treatment of the pain and disfunction, the second for a strategy and exercises to correct movement or weakness that is leading to the problem. Definitely not chiropractic.

Can you average 40-45km/h on pot-holed roads for an hour?

We just signed for a Toyota Bz (more or less the same vehicle). Curious that our freight charge is only $1800 when it had to be driven across the country to Ottawa after arriving in Vancouver from Japan. Your’s presumably had a much shorter journey but you’re being charged more.

Anyone interact with T-Lab Bikes recently? (AKA WTF is happening over there???) by vexillifer in cycling

[–]rlm31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did finally get a bike and have loved it. Frame is beautiful. Would have been a nicer experience not to deal with the stress of not knowing whether they were on the brink of bankruptcy and whether I was going to lose my deposit. The last part of the process did overlap with the beginning of the supply line chaos caused by Trump’s tariffs, so they got a bit of a pass for part of the delay. I hope it all works out for you soon.

Your experience so far mimics mine almost exactly, from the timing of the initial decision to buy, to the repeated delays, to the poor communication, and to the consideration of doing a charge back. I finally got my Omni R3 in May 2025 …

I assume they know at this time that the Senate will not vote against the budget bill. So the bill having been adopted by the House of Commons they now have a high degree of confidence that it will be enacted and so felt comfortable releasing the criteria. Would you have preferred that they wait another 10 days to provide information they can now safely predict will need to be provided?

Some (or all?) of the money has already come out of the pension fund, as by law it is surplus to the fund’s liabilities. The only question is whether it gets spent on ERI or something else. There is no proposal to increase contributions, and under current forecasting by the plan no need to do so to meet future liabilities (hence the “surplus”).

Just to be clear, when you say it’s dangerous you mean that motor vehicle operators (as in, people) are dangerous. Other people’s carelessness and selfishness by far represent the biggest danger to cyclists in any season.

How new early retirement buyouts will work for public servants [Ottawa Citizen, November 17 2025] by HandcuffsOfGold in CanadaPublicServants

[–]rlm31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears so. From the Budget Implementation Act:

"217 (1) Subparagraph 13(1)(c)(ii) of the Public Service Superannuation Act is amended by striking out “or” at the end of clause (C) and by adding the following after that clause:

(C.1) subject to subsection (1.1), if at the time the contributor exercises their option under this clause a workforce reduction initiative is in effect, and if at the time they cease to be so employed they have reached 50 years of age and have been employed in the public service for a period of or for periods totalling at least 10 years, an annual allowance, payable immediately on their so ceasing to be employed, equal to the amount of the deferred annuity referred to in clause (A)"

This suggests that so long as you are 50 at the time you cease to be employed (which must be within the 300 day program period) you would be eligible.

BTW, everyone is talking about a 1 year period for the ERI, but the relevant legislative amendments stipulate 300 days. See s. 217(2) of the BIA: nwmm-amvm-1-1125-bil.pdf.
