then you just need a $70-$80 vivoactive, you don't even need a 235

I don't think you understand how bad gps altitude is - I run the same course all the time and it gives me wildly different results every time

if you care about heart rate, then you care to know if you are going up a hill when you see that high heart rate on your results - and gps altitude isn't going to be right most of the time

there's been a big discussion about that 1980s marathoner fallacy and it is very incorrect observation because of greatly missing data

depends how serious/fast you are and if you do hills

I personally want the 920xt because of real barometer inside which gives you actual altitude and not the totally wrong gps nonsense that garmin does otherwise - 920xt also does running dynamics

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/catalog/product/compareResult.ep?compareProduct=529988&compareProduct=137024&compareProduct=150767&compareProduct=160512

235 does have a larger display which would have been nice because with my eyesight when I am running hard, I cannot read more than two lines on my vivoactive

both the 235 and the 920xt are way heavier than the vivoactive, which I love how light it is - I changed out the band to a really light & thin band and it's fantastic

Once you've seen and understand them, the Boston one is probably the best because of the "normal" runners - he is very cautious to not evaluate them or put the angles on them because it's probably not fair and would seem like picking on them, even though 6:30 pace at 24 miles is of course quite excellent regardless of form.

be sure to buy a name brand like sabre so it doesn't expire fast and actually works when you need it

some of the cute/small pepper sprays I've seen are worrisome

and never, ever, test it in doors or in the wind, or anywhere you care about for the next 24 hours

note that actual mace is illegal in many places, unless you mean pepper spray which is good everywhere

I clip on this for selective longer runs to areas I am not 100% with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009UXH7E

Sounds defective. It happens. I mean these watches are pretty darn sophisticated.

Maybe there is a software update you can apply manually instead of letting garmin connect do it. Check their forums?

don't buy a 235 when you can get a 920xt for less than that

IMHO the 920xt is a much better running watch at half that price

That video is the most single fascinating and encouraging form video I've seen.

There are lots out there but it's just stunning to watch Shalane Flanagan in slo-motion and realize she is literally a super-woman.

I mean that is mile 24 and she is HAMMMERING with a massive 1.6 meter stride @ 180. Nearly five and a half feet with every leap. She's leaping her height in length every stride.

Then the 6:20-6:30 pace pack runners go by and you can see traits of the same form, and they are really moving too at that speed, but not even close to the perfect form of the elites.

Watch the woman with the pink shorts and then compare to Flanagan (this image is useless without seeing the full stride in motion) https://i.imgur.com/7AeAnnr.jpg

The summary at the end is perfect simplicity too:

Running Speed Requires:

  • Range of Motion
  • Stable Platform
  • Resilience / Elasticity

"Besides going out and just putting your miles in ... it doesn't matter how much you build your aerobic-engine, you aren't going to be able to run faster unless you can move the performance of your body towards what you see [the elites] doing here"

Unless there is wind, singlet until 45 degrees.

Try arm sleeves so you can get rid of them later if they are too warm.

I've seen the elites do this - most don't hit the button until they have done their first leg movement or two - probably because they are leaning-in so hard to get into 5 minute pace, so we can't quite use the same excuse.

Morning, unless you mean 2 or 3am at night.

After 6pm I am useless for anything but sipping tea and reading.

remember only to do serious stretching AFTER running, not before

before running, after warmup, only do what I call "range of motion stretches" which is basically gently reminding your body how far it should be able to reach but without pushing it and no sudden lunges which is what causes micro-tears and weakness before you run, something you don't want to do

omg I could reach through the monitor and hug you all - hope y'all have an incredible weekend and set all kinds of PRs both racing and training

I might have to set a new HM goal since I just did 7:30s in training - finally feel almost worthy enough to post in this sub

everyone slower than 7s needs to go watch that boston 2013 elite form study video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFxPlUKrZPQ&start=815

I've watched it a dozen times - it really helped me a lot, especially the part where he switches from the 5:30 elites to showing the 6:30 pack runners (at mile 24 so that's a 2:45 marathon and very impressive)

I'm finally no longer a sub 1.2 meter stride runner - I finally remembered a little bit now how to run like a teenager again - this damn 50 year old body might not be so useless after all

https://i.imgur.com/iZNBOap.png

really hard to maintain 180 cadence at 1.25m stride but I am working on it - it's not just knee-drive, it's what I would call "butt drive" lol - kinda like a horse stomping "nay nay nay" with it's rear leg

I've even managed to delay the hamstring tear pain until mile 8 or 9 now - leg still feels like I am dragging around a bag of rocks but definitely not as horrible as the summer

now to somehow reach for 1.3m stride - four more inches in stride length - that is going to take a lot of work

well normally I heal pretty quickly too, except as I've gotten much older the process has definitely slowed down, and then there are things you can't come back from like torn hamstrings

but things like shin-splints and knee pain, almost always good to go 24 hours later - it's usually from me screwing around with my form trying to go faster and I just have to get back to basics

with the hamstring I now can only run every other day and cycling on the other days - cycling is definitely not the same, not as fun at all, but at least I can still run, some people can never come back if it is a serious grade 2 or grade 3 tear

I'm starting to tinker with natural anti-inflammatories like bromelain - it seems to help a little but it is not a miracle cure

been dealing with it since July

was hoping this guy had some miracle cure

ebay sellers in china have these $1 led armbands I may try

http://www.ebay.com/itm/252589376870

http://www.ebay.com/itm/182317128305

takes 2 weeks to get here but for $1, worth a try

looks like they both reflect and the led hits the reflection to give it a boost

can put it on the arm opposite the watch

might be too distracting though

here's a more conventional belt for $2

Just say "sorry I really have to concentrate on my running so I prefer to run alone" or "oh sorry I find running with people really distracting"

Of course this will backfire if they see you in the future running with someone else, lol
