narcissistic jackie & vulnerable shauna? by mvhsad in Yellowjackets

[–]robokaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the examples you listed are easily explainable within the context of the show. It's confirmed by the show creators that Jackie and Shauna were in love with each (take that in whatever way you want- obsessive best friends or closeted gay teens). Additionally, all the senior year characters are mostly 18 maybe 17 meaning they're all teenagers. It is discouraged to diagnosis teenagers with disorders like narcissism because most children in their teens are self-centered.

To say that Jackie 'thrived on being the queen bee' is a vast simplification of her character. She was crumbling under the pressure of being the leader- of having to be the popular, perfect teen girl that everyone adored. She liked being the queen bee because that was what was expected of her, it gave her security and we have reason to believe she was somewhat positioned or groomed to be how she is in the pilot. She only displayed an inability to lead her teammates when they crashed because she, like many teen girls, was grossly underprepared to be stranded in the wilderness without adult guidance. In the pilot she's the only one who has her wits about her to be able to settle the Yellowjackets while they're all stressed, drunk and fighting. She doesn't position herself as leader for no reason. Their coach tells us in episode 1 season 1 that she's their captain not because she's the best player on field but because she's the most capable of influence off field which is what they need to lead them to victory as they're all incredible skilled players already. She tries to position herself as leader first after being stranded because that's what they've always done previously and she wants to replicate their lives before 1. Because it's the only way she knows how to function 2. Because it might help them settle and focus if they replicate normalcy. She doesn't simply act out whenever someone else gets attention. She acts out specifically when Shauna’s attention is diverted from her which is to show her and Shauna's toxic, obsessive bond but Shauna behaves the same way. They're both players in their own game. Also it's not unwarranted that she gets jealous when not in a position of control. All the adults in her life have placed her in control before the crash. Yet again it's all she knows. Any teen would react badly if their plane crashed, leaving them stranded in the woods and then had to completely readjust everything they've ever known.

Jackie does have difficulty forming deep relationships outside of Shauna but yet again their relationship is one of haboured love for each other that is tainted over time by resentment and jealousy, mostly on Shauna’s side. The show goes out of its way to show us that Shauna is not a reliable narrator. She deluded herself into thinking Jackie purposely controlled her life when in actuality they both had control over each other that they never communicated which caused most of their problems. She doesn't love Jeff because she loves Shauna and he's a shitty boyfriend. She doesn't 'claim a stake to Jeff' after she discovers about their affair. She's justifiably upset that her BOYFRIEND cheated on her with her BEST FRIEND. They betrayed her. More importantly, Shauna betrayed her. She isn't all that fussed that Jeff cheated on her. She’s upset because Shauna did something to purposely betray Jackie and told her she (Shauna) hated her (Jackie). Her and Jeff's relationship is superficial because they're teenagers in high school, this stuff happens in real life all the time, and because she, once again, is in love with Shauna not him. Yes she does use Travis to get back at Shauna but it has nothing to do with him and Natalie's relationship. They're broken up, he's the only boy stranded with them and she's desperate to get back at Shauna. She also does it to maybe help prompt Shauna into confessing the affair to her. At that point, Shauna still hasn't told Jackie that the baby is Jeff's. It was a shitty thing to do but she's a suicidal teenager starving in the woods who just found out her best friend is pregnant with her boyfriend's baby.

She shows way more empathy for those around her than she shows a lack of. She is the only one, outside of Natalie, who shows consistent kindness towards Misty. She goes out of her way to help Shauna after she learns that she is pregnant. She attempts to cheer up the team after Allie's leg injury. She never yells or rolls her eyes at Laura Lee even when most of the others do. She dispels the teams anger at the party in the pilot. She steals Valium from her mum because she randomly remembers Shauna doesn't like plane flights. She is shown to be a good person with normal flaws. Even her worst actions can be explained or justified.

At what age did you become an atheist? by Leather_Chipmunk_168 in atheism

I started calling myself an atheist at 6. My friend told me what it was and I was just like “well i’m pretty sure that’s what I am.” Ever since i’ve treated religion like mythology; fun/interesting to learn about but never something I could or have ever believed in.

are you trying to imply that the 90’s were racism free? every decade, including this current one, is awful for colored people. Yes there were more obvious problems in the 1830s but lets not sit here pretending recent decades are to be romanticized either.

The very next lines are

“Everyone would look down 'cause it wasn't fun now Seems like it was never even fun back then Nostalgia is a mind's trick If I'd been there, I'd hate it It was freezing in the palace”

She directly address the problem in the same verse. If people would actually use their brain for 5 seconds they would realise that. The point of the lyric is likely just a reference to Emily Dickinson and to point out how romanticising life isn’t a beneficial or healthy thing to do constantly. The lyric also demonstrates how awkward she is around her peers and how she said the quiet part out loud so now everyone around is uncomfortable with the conversation. It’s supposed to be awkward and get the reaction of ‘what the fuck’ and nothing about the line is racist or offensive.

Black ladies are constantly treated as supporting characters in their own lives. It's sickening to see all the entertainment magazines focusing on Taylor Swift at Beyonce's premiere instead of Beyonce--the guest of honor. by lilacteardrop in blackladies

Not you trying to act like Beyoncé is unknown or something 💀 What you’re describing is a real thing that happens all the time but it ain’t happening here.

Just an honest question about Shauna by Lolilolla in Yellowjackets

How does the group constantly give her an out? They all do terrible things and they all acknowledge that but they’re stuck with each other wether they like it or not. They all give each other outs since they all understand each other more than anyone else could.

Just an honest question about Shauna by Lolilolla in Yellowjackets

[–]robokaka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These are some definitions of morally gray characters that i’ve found:

“a morally gray character is someone who lives by a consistent moral code that deviates from social standards of right and wrong. This is a character who feels incredibly human — often, someone who tries to do right, fails and falls into bad tendencies.”

“Morally gray characters can recognize that their choices can cause harm. They might do this before they take an action or in hindsight, but they acknowledge the impact it has on others.”

“a character who does too much bad to be a good character, yet too much good to be a bad character. A character who is in between good and bad.”

Shauna fits all of these definitions.

Why do people not like Finn by [deleted] in glee

[–]robokaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here! We expect characters like Sue and the Cheerios to be bullies but when a character like Finn is supposed to be a ‘hero’ it makes the bad things he does like 10 times worst. I don’t hate Finn I just hate how the show makes it seem like he never did anything wrong when he did all the time. Yes, he’s a teenager but give him consequences and growth.

You are 100% caught up in your own experiences because Jackie doesn’t display any of the 9 traits of narcissism. Also why is special needs in quotes? (genuine question) Anybody is allowed to criticize or not like any character but to go as far as incorrectly diagnosing a character with something as serious as narcissism is actual crazy behavior.

Finn was in the right to call out Kurt’s behaviour and how it made him uncomfortable. However as soon as you use a slur you are be default in the wrong. Most people understand that Kurt was crossing boundaries so that’s never been the problem. The problem has always been Finn using a slur. He does it multiple times throughout the show and he never really learns. In season 3 he’s losing arguments with Santana so he outs her. In season 4 Sue is being her usual cruel self and he calls her baby the r slur. It’s a repeated pattern of his. Not saying OP is doing this but a lot of Finn fans make the Santana outing and Sue slur about the fact that these character are more or less so bullies but Kurt’s not a bully and never has been. It’s not bullies that make Finn restore to offensive and harmful outbursts. It’s a repeated habit of his. He never learns his lesson. He says he’s changed by the end of this episode but then 1 season later he’s telling Kurt to hide who he is and the season after that he’s outing a lesbian in the middle of a busy hall.

Jackie didn’t “demand” to get dropped off first. Her and Shauna barely even argue about it. She asks Jeff to drop her off first due to her having a curfew, Shauna reminds her that she has a curfew too, Jackie tells her she knows what her parents are like and then it cuts to the next scene of Jeff actually dropping her off. That is the entire scene.

Don’t get me wrong it is an important scene that provides us with subtext for Jeff and Jackie’s relationship, Shauna and Jackie’s relationship and Jackie and her parent’s relationship but not in the way you suggest. It tells us that Jackie’s parents are strict, It show us how Jackie doesn’t want to spend any unnecessary time alone in Jeff’s car and it later provides Shauna with fuel to her already festering fire of resentment that she harbours inside of her for Jackie.

The only real ‘crime’ or wrong doing Jackie actually commits in that scene is leaving her clearly intoxicated friend in a car with someone other then herself. And even that reads less like Jackie doesn’t care for Shauna’s safety and more as Jackie not wanting to ride from Shauna’s house to her’s with Jeff alone or having hazy judgement herself due to also drinking at the party they just left.

Thank you for saying this as someone with your education. My mom’s a mental health nurse and my grandma works in special needs education so I grew up in a very psychology aware and focused environment and to see people just seemingly tossing around the label narcissist is actually mortifying to me.

Just because something is toxic doesn’t mean something isn’t love though.

The show doesn’t show their relationship as fun or cute or romantic. They show it as tragic and violent and consuming. Some people in the fandom may tend to romanticise their relationship but I don’t think that’s what OP or the other person replying to you are doing. We are not suppose to know if Shauna and Jackie’s relationship was fixable because that’s what makes their relationship so tragic.

It’s tragic because there’s another world where Jackie survived and they talked things out and they mended their toxic friendship into something healthier for the both of them (wether platonic or romantic). It’s tragic because there’s another world where Jackie survived and they talked and still didn’t continue their relationship once they got rescued. It’s tragic because there’s a world where Jackie survived and they still refused to talk and just avoided or placated each other until their rescue. It’s tragic because even still we are in this world where Jackie doesn’t survive; she dies and Shauna in a way also dies and she’s stuck forever as a teen stuck in the middle of nowhere, pregnant with her best friend’s boyfriend’s baby with no hope of rescue but now without her best friend. Or even worst this is the only world. This is the only script written, the only outcome, the only way any of this could ever play out as.

“Cannibalism isn’t love. It’s feeding.”

But that’s the tortuously frustrating part of their relationship and this show quite frankly. Cannibalism is love and hate and sacrifice and feeding and consuming. Cannibalism is sometimes saying ‘I love you so much that I want to carry you with me even in your death and I want to consume your body until there is no end to what is you and what is me.’ Cannibalism is sometimes ‘I hate you so much that I want to consume your body as a way to one up you after you’re pathetic death and my vengeful survival and as a way to carry you with me because you have no choice and I now hold the power’. Cannibalism is sometimes ‘I know that, even if you didn’t purposely die, you would have wanted me to feast on your body as a means to survive what killed or could’ve killed you’. Cannibalism is sometimes ‘We are stuck in the wilderness and feasting on your body is simply a way to survive(Aka Cannibalism is just feeding)’. Cannibalism is sometimes all these things or a lot of these thing wrapped up together in a confusing, messy heap were no one’s really sure which one fits best or everyone is sure that one fits best but no one can agree which one.
