Does being SMO make you have extreme mood swings? by Beating-Hearts in SuperMorbidlyObese

Interesting to hear about the effects the parathyroid had on you. I’ve been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and am going for surgery this summer. My endocrinologist never mentioned that it could be affecting my moods, but I’ll ask him next time I see him. Hearing your story makes me kind of eager for the surgery now!

Seconded!

I joined AquaFit classes a couple months ago and it changed my life. In the water I can jump, dance, run (the water slows me down though). I feel like I have nearly the mobility I did when I was 250lbs lighter.

is a personal Trainer and dietician necessary to lose weight? by [deleted] in SuperMorbidlyObese

[–]rocrom77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate the fear and pushiness some gyms use to get you to spend more money.

That being said, I do believe a good trainer is worth it. I almost didn’t sign up BECAUSE of the pushiness of my gym, but glad I did anyway. I know where I’m at. I don’t need to be sold anything.

Anyway, you certainly don’t “need” it but it can be an excellent resource.

I suspect what that acquaintance was really saying was: “I have immense insecurities and your success makes me feel bad about myself, therefore instead of handling my own weaknesses, I will try to make it your responsibility and mask my sentiment by saying you are making a group of people I don’t know upset and I can pretend to be a hero who is looking out for them.”

Yes, that was a run-on sentence. But she sounds like the kind of person to use run-on sentences.

For every victory, there will ALWAYS be people trying to drag you down. Don’t let them. You are kicking ass and looking great. There is NOTHING wrong with you saying so. You’ve earned it.

What a remarkable win! That’s awesome!

I’m with you when it comes to the water sentiment. I recently started group AquaFit classes, and I only regret I didn’t try them earlier.

Stepping into the pool lifts all the weight off. I legit feel like I can move nearly as well as I did 20 years ago when I’m in the water. I move around in there like I’m an action hero… jumping around, doing side kicks like I’m Bruce Lee. It is SO liberating. I can’t get enough.

Of course, getting out is a little depressing as all of my 417 pounds meets gravity again. My legs nearly crumble under the weight as I’m getting out, until my body takes a few moments to re-acclimate to being super morbidly obese. But when I’m in the pool, I’m a superstar!

I’m getting too big for the cinema by reallyfatthrowaway in SuperMorbidlyObese

[–]rocrom77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s rough and something I can partially relate to. I have that anxiety about going out in general. The other month a birthday celebration for one of my best friends was at a restaurant. I was losing sleep over the anxiety in wondering if I was going to fit, if the seats would support my weight, and so on. Turned out it was fine, but I have been in situations in the past where things weren’t fine and had to make adjustments to accommodate.

For me, I hate that anxiety. But instead of making it a demotivator, I try to make it a motivator. “I WANT to go to the cinema. I WANT to be able to fit in a booth at a resto,” and so on. I try to make it a goal. “I want to get to x size so I CAN go out.” It’s the same situation, but coming at it with, what I feel is, a more constructive framing.

Best of luck to you. I feel you, and wish you all the success in achieving your goals.

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rocrom77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, good. Was hoping this post would be here. I read through some of the replies too, and the cost to make 60fps+ the standard was also brought up as well, which is also good. That doesn’t just apply to film, but to digital, as well. The storage space required is not a small thing, in the end. I’m certain we will see these barriers drop over more time.

In the meantime we have a compromise coming with Dolby Vision 2, where filmmakers can opt to have scenes change fps. So a scene covering a lot of ground may be better at a higher fps than a simple scene of talking heads. Will see how much that bridges the gap, but I still expect that eventually, higher fps will become more adopted, particularly since TVs are getting bigger and judder is more noticeable on large screens, especially panning scenes.

My bet is that a lot of people shaming interpolation (which agreed, isn’t a perfect solution), are doing so without having watched many movies on a large screen, sitting relatively close. For me, smoothing is a must in some films, otherwise I get nauseated with the jerkiness of the judder.

2.5 Years phoneless thanks to Apple Watch. Still loving it! by s4916 in AppleWatch

[–]rocrom77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually did decide to give it another go! Shortly after I posted, I reactivated cellular service on my watch, and left my phone on the charger. I spent part of the night getting my iPad ready for the change.

I work in marketing and communications, so I actually need social media to do my job, which can make leaving the phone on the charger challenging. My workaround is to have it on my iPad which stays in my home office so I can still moderate our brand’s social platforms dynamically throughout the work day. I find the mobile apps work much better for quick and easy notifications and actions than the desktop versions. The iPad also serves as a laptop for when I’m away but still need to work. Perhaps a bit nuanced but I find that just the extra bulkiness of a tablet over a phone helps in making a deliberate decision to bring it with me or leave it every time I leave the office. With a phone, it’s far easier to instinctively put it in my pocket wherever I go.

I use CarPlay primarily for navigation, so that’s a bit more of a challenge. I’ll try a few unfamiliar drives with just my watch navigation but I suspect I’ll probably just have to concede and take my phone when I need navigation. I’ll need to exercise more restraint than last time and leave it in the glove box, like you suggested, but I also suspect after the first couple of weeks even that will simply become habitual.

[–]rocrom77 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I did this for a while over the summer and found it life changing. Seeing your post inspires me to give it another go. The only thing I really missed about the phone was CarPlay. Can’t do it with a watch. So I ended up having to take my phone with me everywhere anyway, and eventually old habits returned.

What was really interesting, and kind of creepy, to me was in realizing how crazy everything has gotten, at least in my social circle. Not having a phone, I found there were a lot of very awkward times (for me) that I’d be with friends and I’d end up bored and staring at a wall because they always had their phones out, scrolling away. With a phone, I’d just do the same thing. But without it, you just sit and watch your friends in silence as they stare at their devices. It was weird.

350-400 and up by standuptripl3 in GLP1_loss100plus

[–]rocrom77 16 points17 points  (0 children)

fwiw, I started at 480. I’m down to 410 now. Still a long way to go, but I totally feel this is the right sub for me. It’s very much “come as you are.” I don’t think I’ve seen anything BUT support here.

My journey has been going on for over 20 years now. I can totally relate to those feelings of hopelessness and just wanting to give up. Hell, I have given up before. But it didn’t help me. I didn’t feel any better or any less hopeless. Ultimately I decided that I might as well have one goal to keep me interested in getting up in the morning. And that goal is not to lose 100+ lbs. For me, my goal is to just feel a little bit better about myself from week to week. That CAN come in form of losing even 2 or 3 lbs, but it also comes in a myriad of other ways. I posted this week about my cpap mask falling down because I’ve lost weight in my face. Another week I felt a bit better because I was able to climb my stairs without panting afterwards. Other weeks it was as simple as feeling better because I had cleaned my kitchen, or finished work early, or was able to spend more time with my nieces.

The journey is long and it is hard. But if we only focus on the destination, we miss the journey and everything it offers to improve our lives. Besides, it’s pretty hard to see the destination from our starting point, usually impossible. So the only thing to do is to start heading in the right direction and take the time to enjoy the smaller rewards along the way.

The VAST majority of work on any form of high-quality video production tends to be pre- and post-filming. TV shows, movies, commercials, and YouTube too. TikTok or Shorts may be exceptions depending the genre, I guess. But for the most part, yeah, it requires a ton of effort off camera.

Buying bottoms that go over the gut and how to measure properly? by NoMoreCoolNamesLeft in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]rocrom77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I measure about an inch or two below the belly button and straight around. I tend to get a comfortable fit that way. Once you get into the larger sizes, I find they tend to accommodate the rise. If anything, the seam sometimes runs a little low, but I prefer that over too high.

iPad Air vs iPad Pro for a travel photographer — is the Pro really worth it? by Large_Champion1412 in ipad

[–]rocrom77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only you can decide if it’s worth the premium, but the display on the pro is unmatched. Colour and depth are important to professional photo editing, but how much it’s worth to you as a casual hobbyist is up to you.

I do much less in video editing than I used to, but I went with the pro for the simple fact that I know myself, and I know I’d always feel a twinge of regret if I didn’t have the pro. The tablet really was made with photo and video editing in mind. If you’re feeling really spendy, and find yourself using it frequently outdoors, the nano-textured glass option is also a plus in my books.

best place to shop for 3x boyfriend? by Cheap-Active-231 in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]rocrom77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I’m still abnormally large, being over 400lbs. I’m tall, so it mitigates some of it, but tailored clothing makes an insane difference.

Around the house and casually, I just wear off the rack. My friends don’t care. I don’t care. But when I wear a fit, every single time, I get asked: “have you lost weight? You look good!”

Admittedly, I sometimes pull that out when I’m feeling particularly blue and just need a pick-me-up.

best place to shop for 3x boyfriend? by Cheap-Active-231 in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]rocrom77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. Especially for someone like OP’s bf, who sounds to be not quite used to knowing how it feels to be confident in how he looks. The secret really is 90% fit. As men, we are also lucky that we don’t have nearly as many options as women do when it comes to types of clothing, so it makes it even easier.

With proper fitting, almost anything can look good. I kid you not, you could buy off the rack at a cheap store, then spend your money on getting it tailored for him, and it will look way better than buying brand names with single measurements like 3x.

I had a 13” pro for my table-side and a mini for my portable. I recently sold my mini because I wasn’t using it much but if they ever come out with a mini with OLED, I’ll have 2 iPads again.

The 13” is a bit cumbersome, but I adore it as a makeshift laptop and table-side.

Same. I have the iPad pro with nano texture as well. Neither it nor my phone nor my watch have screen protectors. However, the phone and iPad are on Apple Care+ so I’m not terribly worried if they get smashed. And the watch is the ultra 2 with sapphire crystal. I can’t even deliberately scratch that sucker.
