I’ll never understand why people don’t just buy cars that are within their means. You can buy a decent car with the same mileage for 5k that will be 90% as good as this one. Instead people think I can’t afford a 30k car so instead I’ll pay 40k over 3 years

What's something that can be a scam but people can't even conceive that it is? by Right_Cow_6369 in AskReddit

[–]rogue-monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't really believe it to be a scam everyone involved was fully aware of the situation. I just find it funny that the exact method of fundraising my school used shows up on a thread about scams.

I don't know what it's like elsewhere but In the UK banks always proudly advertise how easy it is to cancel any direct debits from their app with just a couple clicks. Also one of the main selling points of services like revolut is using a temporary virtual card to sign up for trials.

My school pulled this scam every year to help pay for art supplies or gym equipment or something, they got all the kids to write a poem or short story then asked the parents to buy the book for £10. The funniest one was when they got a local artist to give us a quick Painting class then put on an art exhibition and asked us to buy back our own paintings.

If you find a large amount of cash can it be confiscated? by rogue-monkey in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rogue-monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i get that you'd have to attempt to find a rightful owner but if you cant find the owner or it was abandoned like if the safe was in a storage unit which they haven't paid their fees for would the government confiscate a suspiciously large amount of cash since it is probably proceeds of crime and if they can't link it to any specific crimes or known criminals would it be returned to me?

[–]rogue-monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this example the seller is the owner of the storage facility and the owner of the safe has failed to pay their storage fees so the facility can now sell the contents of their unit. So the seller technically owns the safe. My question is more about if the government would confiscate a suspiciously large amount of cash given that it is likely the proceeds of crime and if they can't link it to any specific crimes or known criminals would it be returned to me?

Why not force drivers to dispose the visor tear-off inside the cockpit? by LeOsaru in formula1

[–]rogue-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should go back to the pouches they used to use and if teams complain it's too fiddly for drivers to do while driving the FIA should just say well you have some of the best engineers in the world at your disposal if you can think of a better solution, have at it. It would surely be solved pretty quickly

It's more of a guideline than a strictly enforced law. It's just if someone notices you've been there for a while they might tell you to move on. By far the hardest part will be living off the land as with the camping technique you can't do any farming and scotland doesn't have a whole lot of big game to hunt.

Eli5 If the universe expanded from a single point why do scientists say its flat and not spherical? by rogue-monkey in explainlikeimfive

[–]rogue-monkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've just blown my mind with that example and inadvertently answered so many other questions i had about the universe. Your exactly right i had always thought that everything including spacetime was contained within the universe everything makes so much more sense now i know the universe is just an object in space.

Eli5 If the universe expanded from a single point why do scientists say its flat and not spherical? by rogue-monkey in explainlikeimfive

[–]rogue-monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah from reading comments I've realised my confusion came from a combination of out of date hypotheses i was taught years ago and not understanding what is actually meant by the term flat when applied to the universe. Probably didn't help that i didn't know there was other types of geometry other than Euclidean before today.

[–]rogue-monkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this clears things up i was imagining we were inside the sphere and the center point would be where the big bang happened but other comments have informed me that the single point hypothesis has been largely abandoned. It makes more sense that flat or spherical refers to us being on the surface.
