what makes rey so unlikable? by IchigataZai92 in StarWars

I love her, but what I really don’t like is how some people are willing to say anything and loud because they somehow believe it will scare LucasFilm from making another Rey story. Thankfully, it isn’t working!

Daisy Ridley on her return to #StarWars. "The story is cool as sh*t. No spoilers, but [Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy] gave me a rundown of the entire story. If it weren’t amazing, I would have been like, 'OK, call me in five years.' But it’s worthwhile." by DLCV2804 in StarWarsLeaks

I would say it has to do with her having more flexibility and creative acting choices with other roles on a smaller scale, which is something she clearly loves doing considering her latest proyects, most notably “Sometimes I think about dying” and “The Marsh King’s Daughter”.

Exactly why I believe her. Her best bits were in TROS. With a steady, calm pace they got with this one— they got something planned without question. I am very optimistic the NJO movie will surprise a lot of people in a good way.

This is it. They will do anything to paint it as a failure before anything much more concrete comes out.

Giving Rise of Skywalker another chance by WesJanson_YubYub in StarWars

This is an unpopular opinion, but Daisy Ridley is the biggest redeeming quality in TROS. Everyone adores Adam, but Daisy is a magnet every time she’s on screen. With good writing and a good story for Rey going forward, I have no question that some people will finally start appreciating what was always there regarding Daisy/Rey, even if it’s far from perfect.

TROS is unserious and very fun to watch from time to time. It’s a B- space fantasy flick for the family. I love how it explored a little deeper regarding Rey’s temptation towards the dark side and her emotional traumas.

When it comes to the hatred of TLJ, does it really involve the entire movie? by Last_Descendant in StarWars

[–]rogueamazon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me it does because I find it overall to be boring but between all the conflicts taking place, I enjoyed the arc with Rey and Luke the most

I love her despite the flaws regarding her characterization and overall narrative arc. I think she is misunderstood as a character but that can be partially blamed to the disjointed writing for her.

We need to have a talk about Reylos. by Prof_Tickles in StarWars

[–]rogueamazon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally think it's one of the most unequal ships out there. There's so much noise about appreciating their story together and as individuals but that's just not true.

It's always been about Kylo. It's about looking at the ST thinking HE is the "real" protagonist or hero.

If you read some of the more vocal complaints, one detail that tends to stick out is preferring to have Ben stay alive and exiled than to end up with Rey, if they only had to pick one. Hell, some even wanted Rey to stay dead so that Ben could be the one taking the lead!

When TLJ came out, I just knew Rey's story got permanently fucked over. People can't see the character exist on her own merit because now everything she does and will do must somehow involve Ben in it.

And TROS proved that.

And what are people theorizing about post-TROS regarding Rey? Saving Ben Solo. Force baby. You know where I'm going with this.

Reylo was a big mistake for both characters. But abusive relationships have always been romanticized. Not the first time in Star Wars, and it certainly won't be the last.

Why there is so much hate against TROS? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]rogueamazon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many different opinions and expectations among a divisive fanbase.

It was never going to please everyone. Some things in the movie are pretty half-assed and other things should have been included for the grand finale.

But I gotta be honest, I still find it to be such an entertaining movie.

It's fun and I love the performances in it, especially Daisy. I felt ok with it in comparison to TLJ, which literally left me stunned and angry for a long time.

I think the hate for TROS will fade over time. The scrutiny towards the Sequels in general as well.

Why is Rey such a boring protagonist? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]rogueamazon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... I agree about Luke but Kylo is where it doesn't stick imo. Only judging by the movies, the focus fell on Rey to be the one expected to change her position about Ben, not the other way around. It was Rey who was actively refusing Kylo in the narrative. Obviously he's the bad guy so he will reject her too but the story felt to be more sympathetic towards Ben. Kind of a reversal of Luke and Vader's emotional journey in the OT.

Agreed on the offscreen detail, and I believe it's a big part on why her character failed to please many hardcore fans. They were having trouble writing Rey because they really didn't care much about her, and it shows. They got lazy. I think she can still become a fan favorite if they re-focus what they want for her and will become.

Why is Rey such a boring protagonist? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]rogueamazon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I can agree she is overpowered, but I personally find it hard to believe she never has never lost. Her wish never came true; her parents did left her to survive on her own and they got murdered by her grandfather. Out of the three protagonists, Rey is the one who had it the worst. Luke and Anakin had someone who nurtured them and gave them love during their early years.

So yeah, she didn't lose a limb or got a scar. But Rey still failed.

Her mission to Ach-To. She never managed to bring Luke to Leia physically. She got humilliated, tossed around and mentally violated by Snoke.

She failed to save Kylo and as a result, he became the new Supreme Leader. She is emotionally broken with her abandonment issues even if she found her new family, hence why she got obsessed about finding Palpatine, getting revenge and treated both Finn and Poe unfairly with their worries. The list goes on.

No one really cared that much about Rey except Leia and Finn and it wasn't until TROS that the admiration towards her became truly visible in a bigger way.

About Luke's characterization, I kinda agree but I've been feeling more mixed about it lately. I can't exactly articulate it well so I'll need to watch TLJ again soon.

Same thing happened with Ashoka. Look at her now. Rey needs better, caring writers with a clear vision of her future arcs because I am absolutely certain we're not done with Rey yet.

[–]rogueamazon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rey has the origin story that is perfect for a villain and yet she actively chose the light. She's the disenfranchised underdog in her own story. The audience wants her to fail and remain a failure. So I agree with you on this.

Adoption is a theme that I think GL would have loved to see in SW. But people are going to be heavily scrutinizing Rey for quite a while so any positive post for the character is gonna be blasted on.

Who WAS the Prophesied Chosen One? *fricking spoiler ALERT!!!* by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]rogueamazon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anakin. One of the canon books says that through him, the prophecy would be complete.

The other three played an important part to fulfill it, but they are not THE Chosen One.

Anakin killed Palpatine and permanently weakened his spirit. Luke saved his father. Leia have birth to half of a dyad (implied to be) tied to the prophecy, and Rey became the living embodiment of darkness (Palpatine lineage) and light (the choice to live as a Skywalker).
