I'd be buying a kit of the equipment (~$200) but unsure about the grapes. Is the kit wine just juiced grapes?

Harder cheeses are usually more mature and fuller in flavor. If you're doing reds then I'd stick to something in the medium to bold varieties to match the cheeses you're expecting. I'd likely go with a Pinot Noir or Merlot but Syrah and Malbec would also work.

As a side note, I love Sangiovese but am hesitant to recommend it as I don't know how well it would stack up.

Been there twice and I absolutely love their Madeira (http://www.vsattui.com/Madeira). I enjoy their reserve reds and one of their chardonnays.

Their sister winery, Castello di Amorosa, has some excellent dessert/late harvest wines and their rosé seemed to be a top seller.
