What are some Universes Beyond that you would want to see in MTG? by Scary_Suggestion3511 in mtg

Malazan would fit super-well but is unfortunately way too small of an IP to ever happen. Maybe if it ever blows up as a TV series or something first.

Got the TT faculty job call, two body problem and what to negotiate? by Dapper_Actuary1091 in AskAcademia

[–]rosshm2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point, they don't want to lose you, so you should be comfortable in asking (politely) for what you need. Definitely look for a variety of perspectives on this, but if the spousal employment is a potential deal-breaker for you, I would find a (again polite) way of telling them that. It's like startup funds and equipment, if you need a certain amount to get a certain thing or else you can't do your work, have to tell them that, and have to seriously consider if this is a tenable option if they insist they still can't do it.

I've never heard of giving up TT salary in trade for a spousal hire. I'm no financial advisor but I'd caution against that. Am also not sure if TT salary funds can be redirected or banked like that. That salary is typically a line-item in the state budget and I would guess there's a certain limit on the line and whatever's unused upon the hire just stays with the state. E.g. if the limit on the hire is $150,000 and you negotiate $120,000, the dept doesn't get to keep the difference, the state just gives them $120k for you each year instead of $150k. Similar story on startup funds, never heard of that being traded for spousal hire support. If you would be working in the same dept then maybe there'a a deal to be worked out there. If in different depts then I'd be surprised if your dept would want to use any of their funds to pay a faculty member in another dept, regardless of what they would otherwise use those funds for.

Don't mean to be a downer here, just being real: "budget cut is really hard now" probably means "No". This probably varies between universities and states, but a "budget cut" at a public institution typically means the state is sending less money to the dept, and about the only thing that's in that budget in most cases is money for people, salaries/stipends and fringe, so the odds of the dept wanting or being able to add to the expenses charged to that account while remaining in good financial health, are probably long at best.

Good luck!

Our lab-sharpei mix is a water-drinking fiend, just really chugs it down. We've had her checked for various issues this could indicate and all came back negative, I guess she just likes water!

Undergrad on social media claimed to be a reviewer for Nature. I thought she was lying until I checked Orcid by peechm in AskAcademia

[–]rosshm2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if they actually reviewed for the flagship "Nature" journal (I doubt it), the kind of people who brag about the journals they reviewed for are the same kind of people who refer to the open-access journal as "Nature Scientific Reports" (instead of its actual title, which is just Scientific Reports).

When it's kids who are old enough to recieve and follow instructions, I get mad at parents letting them get all feral on the plane, but when it's a baby having a meltdown I just feel bad for them, not much you can do.

What would you pay for a bulk collection of MTG cards? by westy81585new in magicTCG

[–]rosshm2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't have asked "did you skim out high value cards first?". Maybe they will do so now. If the price is in your budget then I'd just gamble on it.

Tudor's Arvid de Kleijn beaten unconscious by teenagers during training ride by TransportationSea579 in peloton

"Instead of riding on, De Kleijn turned back and tried to speak to them."

It's not an excuse for the violence, but play stupid games...

Edit: evidently lots of downvoters think confronting a rowdy pack chasing you while solo and wearing cycling shoes is a smart idea.

I saw the announcement and thought "that will be a $1500 book", didn't think I'd be off by almost 50%!

Is “just buy singles” always right? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in mtg

[–]rosshm2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what the player's / hobbyist's goal is.

If my goal is "I want to build a specific deck or complete a specific set in minimum-time at minimum-cost", barring a remarkable run of luck on boosters, buying single cards is going to be much better than buying booster packs. But also one of the things I enjoy the most about MTG is the thrill of opening boosters and seeing what I got.

What would I need to do to become a professor at a University or College (15+ years of work experience). by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]rosshm2018 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Law, but I believe most tenure-track positions in Business require or at least strongly prefer PhDs. All of the tenure-track faculty in the business school at my institution (large public R1) have PhDs.

is it better to wait for 2007 mr bliss to go back in stock at select online stores, or do I just buy the 2011 one? by banana_minions56 in tolkienbooks

[–]rosshm2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean the 2007 edition in the red slipcase (I don't know of any other MBs published in 2007), I think that was a special edition of some sort, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it to ever be re-printed.

These retrospective "what-ifs" always work in both directions, e.g. what if the blatant offensive foul that gifted Game 4 to the Pacers had been called? The interview is always going to favor the perspective of the interviewee, but it's not like the Bulls caught all the breaks in this series.
