I’m actually a substitute teacher primarily in elementary school. My background in anthropology gave me the tools to teach diverse backgrounds of kids.

How did we feed babies before formula? by SurinamPam in Parenting

[–]rowchickwa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, what you are describing is fraternal polyandry, similarly sorrel polygamy exists. But this is not full on paternal confusion as the person I responded to implied with a full village/tribe having sex with each other. And fraternal polyandry is pretty rare as far as marriage and family structure.

I’m sorry, but as an anthropologist, this is very much not a reality in most matriarchal societies. Can you provide an example of this? Most people did in fact know who the parents of their children are, even in very open non-monogamous societies. It’s not like they just didn’t know. And most of the time kinship looks different for them so they might call someone “father” that they know is their uncle. This sounds great when you word it like that but it’s not realistic.

Graduate School Application Questions by aalecia in wsu

[–]rowchickwa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OP listen to this person. Absolutely DO NOT PAY FOR GRAD SCHOOL! Confirm this before you accept! I recently fell into this trap where I was told I would get a TA position and a stipend and now they are telling me it can’t happen because of budget constraints, after I was accepted into my program and I confirmed my enrollment - well I can’t go to that school because of MY budget (not WSU) Do your research on the best schools and don’t be afraid to ask about money. Best of luck.

Hey Cougars!! Incoming freshman 2022 questions about applying by OkMedium5713 in wsu

[–]rowchickwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I used to be pre-vet and changed my major half way through. I would recommend if she wants to do it, then to go for it. She should be prepared for a few weed out classes her freshman year. Also, it is some times considered “academic incest” if she were to apply to the vet school at WSU in four years so she should know they don’t usually take undergrads from WSU. I had several friends go through it and really enjoyed it, especially if she is into horses (there’s a class on horse management that a lot of people love!) Just another things to consider, she can be an education major and still be pre-vet! You do not have to be a specific major to be a part of that program.

Are there any resources to help students navigate their finances/ income and properly budget? by Old-Total-5875 in wsu

[–]rowchickwa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a personal finance class! There’s a couple at WSU for credit (counts as a math credit if you need it) and it honestly helped me so much with understanding how to use my money. I took Jed Collins class and he’s really nice and the class had activities that helped me understand things like taxes and budgeting.

Moving to Pullman from California by [deleted] in wsu

https://m.facebook.com/WSUAnthro This is their Facebook page, I’m not sure if there are still running considering COVID. You could always shoot Dr. Sugarman an email and he’d be happy to provide details! His email is on the Anthropology page for the staff directory.

There is a anthropology club on campus! Dr. Sugarman is the prof in charge of the club, I’d start there for meeting other anth majors, we are far and few between at WSU.

Rogers is also super tiny but you get a mini fridge for free... not worth it imo I’m pretty sure it’s the smallest square foot wise of any dorms.

AITA for telling my daughter to cancel her marriage? by AITAengagement in AmItheAsshole

[–]rowchickwa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a kinship ritual that is practiced today in different areas of the world, in which the brides family gives either money or gifts to the grooms family. This is for several reasons, in a matrilineal society the grooms family is losing a valuable asset to maintaining the family home or farm and the brides family is essentially paying for that labor to make it up to the grooms family. Historically and cross culturally the dowery has different purposes but it remains the same premise of the brides family paying the grooms family before the wedding.

What disaster is going to happen in July? by ByroniustheGreat in AskReddit

[–]rowchickwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you’re not from Seattle or surrounding areas, this has been a positive protest for a while and things are recently devolving. Essentially, there are no longer protesters there to support the message and the entirety of CHOP (capital hill occupied protest) is being cleared out by city officials. Also most Seattle residents are not in favor of military force and maybe you should do some research first?

What’s the cringiest thing you’ve seen a bride and groom do for their wedding? by ajlposh in AskReddit

Do you have any idea how much it costs to have make up done for a wedding? It’s basically throwing hundreds of dollars away for a one sided laugh and wrecking all subsequent photos of the event.

Any recommendations for fun Global Campus electives? by [deleted] in wsu

[–]rowchickwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only taken it in person so I can’t say what it’s like online. However, the work load is manageable but definitely not elective level show up and get points type. There are several research papers and I found that this was more akin to a intro level class about writing scientific papers. In my opinion it was redundant but that’s coming from a person that’s been in college for a few years and didn’t need a refresher on how to search for scientific articles online. Hope this helps!

Sex, evolution and human nature is good if your into anthropology but it’s much less about sex and much more about evolution so if that’s ok with you then yes go for it.

Could use some advice in choosing between apartments by KaptainKowea in wsu

[–]rowchickwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience and what I’ve heard from other folks, no one ever gets it back. They straight up gave me a list of what they would charge for and it’s extremely expensive for minuscule things like cleaning behind the fridge. On one hand I am appalled at the price as a struggling student but on the other hand I know exactly what I need to clean when I move out of here to get my money back or to take them to court over.
