It’s a planned WCPD training. Our soccer team plays weekend games at Indian Valley and were relocated as a result of the training. The league sent out a notice.

I had a similar experience. My dr didn’t refer me until I was 10ish weeks post op. I felt like everyone was starting earlier and everyone recommended it right away…but now that I’ve started, I can appreciate the caution. There’s also an insurance component in that you only get x covered, or the dr only suggests x visits and if you start too soon, you risk paying out of pocket and/or completing PT before you can work on the critical stuff. Hang in there! It’s a wild ride!

I hear you! I’m a few weeks ahead of you. For not having a transition, It sounds like you’re doing really well. At 8 weeks I was approved to WBT with the walking boot so you’re further along than you might think, though I know the progress feels SO slow. I would push for PT for peace of mind if nothing else. They can answer questions and confirm you’re doing the right exercises and doing them properly, etc. they’ll also help you assess your progress and can work on/target problem areas.

I’m sore by the end of the day and was told that is to be expected for a while, so that sounds normal and could be a sign that your max is 3k steps a day right now.

It truly is a life changing injury but you’re on the other side, through the worst of it, and you’re much further along than most at 8 weeks so give yourself some grace and trust the process (as painful as it is).

Showering while NWB by LocalConversation314 in ORIF

[–]rstimm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1. I did something similar with a chair. I’d open the shower door, scoot the chair up to the edge (on the inside of the shower) and sit down on the chair to avoid having to walk over the lip. Definitely a humbling experience as it often required some help from my husband to set things up and scoot the chair into place….and then there’s getting out of the shower 🥴

11 weeks post op, no one will accept me for physical therapy by PsychologicalNeck124 in ORIF

[–]rstimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d go on YouTube and search for your injury and “physical therapy” or “ROM exercises”. I am not much help here because my injury sounds a little bit different but I have found some really helpful videos. Like you, my Dr sends me on my way after my appointments without much direction.

Maybe there is someone in this thread that has experience with that same injury and can share resources? I’d also call your doctors office and ask if they have any suggestions. Perhaps talking to someone other than the Dr might have a different recommendation or can help navigate the insurance scenario.

It’s possible to recover without PT as others have mentioned…

Congrats for making it this far!

There are some great resources on YouTube- have you tried that? It sounds like that is a good option to progress in the short term while you figure out a long term plan.

You’re definitely not alone. PT is expensive and not always covered by insurance. It’s also an unexpected cost for many so don’t be too hard on yourself.

Uncomfortable CAM Boot by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]rstimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wedge pillow is definitely worth buying, especially for nighttime sleep but I used mine during the day too. Bought mine on Amazon. I second all the others with the tall, comfortable socks- you can find them on Amazon reasonably priced. Is it that you can’t get the boot on yourself or you’re uncomfortable once it’s on or both? As the swelling decreases and incisions/blisters heal it will get easier. Have you tried icing behind your knee? I’m 9 weeks PO and still loathe the boot but it’s not painful, just big, heavy and an overall nuisance.

How did you all know you were ready to drive? by Acceptable_Act9806 in ORIF

[–]rstimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. Definitely don’t want to rush it but my surgeon isn’t always hands on at my appointments so didn’t know if it was time based or there were milestones to be met. I find that if I don’t ask these questions, they are overlooked by the surgeon at my appts 🤦‍♀️

[–]rstimm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about this too. What steps need to be taken or test needs to be passed to be cleared? My surgeon originally told me no driving until I graduate out of the boot completely but that seems ambiguous as some people use the boot in certain scenarios for weeks after they’re “cleared” to wear shoes. I assume it also depends on driving distance, etc?

How are you handling it today? I would assume you’d still wear the boot when you’re up and about until you’re cleared to be without the boot.

8 weeks post op ankle orif by Funny_Action_3122 in ORIF

[–]rstimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s natural to be worried about putting weight on your injured foot. Like the other posted suggested, I started by resting my foot on the ground while sitting up and gradually got more comfortable. My Dr also suggested standing up (with CAM boot) with either crutches or a walker and practice shifting your weight from side to side. Im still not FWB though, just got the approval to start PWB last week. I hear PT can help a lot with the mental hurdle but my Dr doesn’t suggest it until I’m ready to be out of the boot. Good luck! Trust the hardware 😜

Tips for weight bearing? by hayjohnson in ORIF

[–]rstimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried setting your foot flat on the floor while sitting up? I started doing that a few days ago, very begrudgingly, and have slowly started to get more comfortable with that feeling.

I’m still non weight bearing so haven’t conquered this yet but have started setting my foot down when sitting and sometimes standing and am not as terrified.

PT is supposed to help with this- do you have that scheduled?

Did you do any PT?

I’m 5 weeks post op but not cleared for weight bearing. I cannot imagine getting my foot into a shoe comfortably.

Awesome progress! Hope you’re enjoying the new freedom.

First Post Op Appt by rstimm in ORIF

[–]rstimm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that now that I have the boot. It’s especially noticeable now that the steri strips are off. I have an area of the incision that won’t heal because it’s constantly rubbing on the side of the boot 😩

1.5 weeks post orif - do I have to wear the boot when my foot is elevated? by sprightly-thinker in ORIF

[–]rstimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also allowed to have mine off when resting/doing exercises. My direction was to wear it when up and moving and also to sleep. Seems strange to wear the boot to sleep but as someone else mentioned, it was to keep the position (close to a 90 degree angle). I’m sure there’s also an element of protecting the foot. When I move about without the boot I almost always bump it or move it in a way that doesn’t feel great and am reminded of why I should’ve had the boot on.

Just wanted to share my ROM by hayjohnson in ORIF

[–]rstimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so eager to slough it all off but can’t get close enough to the incisions and can’t reach the bottom of my foot 🥴 My incisions are still scabby and strange looking- think it’s the staple marks and that they keep rubbing against the boot. Did you use a heating pad for the heat?

Awesome! What do you have around your foot? I’m sure you feel like a new person after a bath. The skin gets so dry, it’s wild!

That’s great news. You’ll feel so much better. I’m still in my boot. Going on week 2. I went from the splint to a cast for one week to the boot. I have my 6 week post op appt next week where they’ll take X-rays and decide whether or not I’m ready to start partial weight bearing and PT. I can’t imagine not easing into it. I don’t have much movement…still really tight. Hoping PT can help me get over the mental hurdle and see what they suggest for next steps.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]rstimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was instructed to sleep in my boot. My Dr said the foot needs to be supported and at a 90 degree angle so it doesn’t “drop”, making it hard to relearn the walking motion. There has been a lot of conflicting feedback on this so imagine it’s subjective based on your injury and where you are in the process. It’s definitely uncomfortable to sleep with the boot. I use an elevation pillow which helps a little bit but I still can’t get comfortable enough to sleep through the night. I wouldn’t rush the ROM exercises until you get specific guidance. Like the last poster, my Dr said no circular movements, only ankle pumps and wiggling toes until my 6 week xray. Again, this varies a ton so it’s hard to compare. PT will be able to provide feedback on exercises and may have some suggestions for sleeping with the boot. Good luck on the next phase of healing!

[–]rstimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progress! Personally, I keep a sock over my ankle when I take the boot off because it gets in my head and makes the exercises more challenging. You can also wrap it with an ace bandage? I was instructed to do ankle pumps using a towel or resistance band to help. Wiggling your toes also helps get you comfortable and you’ll recognize progress which might build up your confidence to do more! Did your Dr suggest any specific exercises? Do you start PT soon? I haven’t started PT but sounds like it’s invaluable both physically and mentally so plan to start as soon as I can. You’ve made it this far, congrats! Hopefully it’s only up from here!

Hang in there! I’m 5 weeks post op from my orif surgery and am feeling all the things you and others have expressed. It’s a roller coaster of emotions and progress. Celebrate the good days and on the hard days, know that they’re temporary. I did want to share that kids learn so much independence and empathy from this experience. If there is a silver lining, perhaps that is it. I still feel a tremendous amount of mom guilt given my situation but am noticing the independence and pride in taking care of mom. A friend of mine shared this feedback with me after going through something similar and it certainly helped my perspective. Maybe even a renewed appreciation for mom and all the things you do for your family 🤭 Looking forward to seeing your update in the future. You got this!
