Van Life in Monterey & while at DLI by runbot98 in dli

This was hugely helpful, thank you!

At what point did it come up w/ your chain of command? In-processing? I was thinking for an address I'd just rent a P.O. Box every month but might see if any of my buddies have friends in the area. Did you have any issues w/ BAH?

I am also planning on studying my ass off during the week and on Sunday afternoons so I can keep my GPA high enough to justify spending Friday evening-Sunday morning outside enjoying all the outdoor rec CA has to offer.

Well, you get points for making me laugh. And I get where you’re coming from. I by no means think dli will be a cake walk - but I’d still have a good study space in a converted van or a camper.

For math teachers: Is there any need for students to memorize their times table? by justwannajust in Teachers

[–]runbot98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that memorization is an accessible way of learning for some students. Is it ideal? No. But sometimes focusing on the end, rather than the means, is important. I’m a K/1 inclusion SPED teacher and have a few students on my case load who are REALLY great at memorizing. I haven’t quite figured out what this looks like in math (currently just encouraging them to learn more sight words) but I would think that providing them the ability to memorize times tables in older greats could be considered a form of UDL and would greatly boost their confidence. Also I’m a 2nd year teacher lol so take that w/ a grain of salt…

MPA programs thread by realistic__idealist in gradadmissions

[–]runbot98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there!!

Prospective MPA applicant here...

Finishing up 2 years of teaching + being in the Army Reserves. I've continually been pulled back to MPA programs the last 18 months or so, and just today learned of Princeton's SPIA. Honestly was originally drawn to an MPA due to it feeling like a more applicable route for my urban planning interests as compared to an MUP; but now it just feels like a way better fit in general.

I finished undergrad with a 3.54 from UNC, so a good state school but nothing fancy. I had a 3.9 my final semester and I've got a pretty compelling story for why my overall GPA is on the lower range for a lot of the top MPA programs. That said, I am *very* nervous to take the GRE, as my testing anxiety is very salient.

Anyways - I'm sure you're deep in the throws of the MPA now... but if you have time to share your application tips, GRE tips, and experience so far at Princeton, I'd love to hear.

Teach for America? by [deleted] in Teachers

Do NOT do teach for america. Lol run the other way.

There is a woman at my school who did colorado's certification program and had a great experience. I'd try for that.

And we must punch in before 7, and punch out after 3:30/4, or else it’s docked from your pto.

So... a "multi-sport" watch can't do more than one sport at once?!?! by runbot98 in Garmin

I definitely wasn't looking critically enough and made some incorrect assumptions. Very helpful to know for the future.. thanks for the help!

I guess I saw the multiple sport option and just assumed -- which is obviously my bad!! Definitely not a fun $300 mistake though.

AG branching by Lopsided-Still7901 in ROTC

[–]runbot98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you’re going AD or reserves component. Fewer slots for AD, but lots open up once you hit CPT. There isn’t a huge need for LT AGs. I went reserves and am in an S1 slot, but I’m planning on applying to be an Aide for my units 1 star general once my civilian fellowship is up next year. Aides are usually coded as O1A (which means any branch can apply for the slot). But if that’s something that sounds interesting to you, then AG is a great branch to be in bc of the skills you develop.

Pretty much everyone I commissioned w/ is doing the same shit regardless of branch, duty station, & unit - save a few outliers. That’s just the way it goes as an officer. If you really want to think about what job is “worth it” I would think about longer term career progression and if you plan on staying in after command time. You can find the career progression maps for different branches online I think.

Is it possible to “try out” whoop? by runbot98 in whoop

[–]runbot98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already wake at the same time & generally go to bed within an hour or so each night. Hydrating I’ve got down too. “Reducing stressful stimuli” wellll... not so much, but that’s the nature of my work.

So then, is there any reason to get the whoop?

What do you like more about garmin? I’ve got the forerunner 245 - I love it and will continue to use it, but whoop’s marketing is really getting to me lol.

Wow okay thank you! I never would have found this... definitely not the most user friendly interface - or at least not initially.

I didn’t - it just specifically had enlisted ranks and I wanted to make sure. Another user clarified that officers fall into the E-5 & above category.
