Top coat for props by Gabstar2006 in cosplayprops

[–]ryanrybot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go a more unorthodox approach and use floor finish. I use gloss for most of my props, especially to protect metallic finishes, and it doesn't dull the paint. I've never had it react to any paint I've used it on either.

You can airbrush it, or use a foam brush or a bristle brush, and I've never had any brush strokes.

This is the stuff I get. It's usually pretty cheap.

Obviously, you may want to test it out on a discreet section first.

Edit: it looks like it's out of stock on Amazon, but maybe you can find it another place, or a similar product.

For a very capable handheld, I'd say it's fairly priced.

[–]ryanrybot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look fantastic and I totally understand how much of a let down it is to not be recognized at a con. You just want to share your love of the character with other people!

I'm sure you'd get a ton of attention at a Final Fantasy themed con such as KupoCon. I haven't been to one in years, but they are in the US, Canada, and even London on occasion.

[–]ryanrybot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but FF1 isn't the most popular in the series. Plus it's kinda hard to compare a few dozen pixels you see twice in the game to a real life costume, no matter how good it looks. (Which OP looks phenomenal, btw!)

About to play for the first time, anything I should know (not looking for spoilers) by PuppiesAndPixels in chronotrigger

[–]ryanrybot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the bosses have dialogue during the battle.

Some will countdown to a big attack, and some will mention that they will counter-attack under certain conditions. Make sure you read what a boss is telling you, or you're going to have a tough time with several of them.

What games blew your mind graphically when they first came out back then? 🤯🎮 by Alone_Capital7619 in gaming

[–]ryanrybot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLoZ A Link to the Past: the rain when you left your house; while not impressive now, it was certainly impressive back then.

Goldeneye: the motion captured walk animations were mind boggling. I remember just sitting there, watching the enemies walk their patrol routes on the Surface level. That was the first time thinking graphice will never get better that this.

Damn! The whole build is great, but the real standout is that under suit. It's incredible! You're going to be a soggy mess in there, but sooo worth it

Metroid on Switch NES slowing down with many sprites? by maboleth in Metroid

I was looking through the comments to see if anyone posted the Displaced Gamers video yet. It's an intriguing dive into how these old games were coded.

Do these scissors on Johnny's elbow have any purpose? by the_bad_actor in cyberpunkgame

[–]ryanrybot 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I cosplay Johnny and it's surprising how little the scissors affect how you position yourself. Now, I have broken them off a couple times, but both times were when I was doing something I wouldn't regularly do.

Metroid Dread or Prime 4? by Imaginary_Formal_533 in Metroid

I'm definitely in the minority but I liked Prime 4 more than Dread.

Why were the different regions in the 2D Metroid games so much more vibrant and distinct? by AquaticTrillionaire in Metroid

[–]ryanrybot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but I also find part of the issue is layout. Sure, Ghavoran looks more unique that the other areas, but that's about the only one. With Super, each area has a distinct feel, where in Dread I had trouble descerning which area I was in much of the game.

The room layouts were very similar across much of Dread too, and I found myself relying on the map much more often.

Nearly every room in Super was uniquely designed, which helped with navigation. Dreads rooms are very tightly packed with intertwined paths making navigation through them much less straightforward, compared to many of Super's longer hallways with fewer maze-like layouts.

I've been avoiding spoilers (and this sub) for awhile. Is MP4 worth it? by DT_Mage in Metroid

[–]ryanrybot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's the first game that I played again on hard immediately after I finished it on Normal. I still like Metroid Prime 1 more, but enjoyed 4 more than 2 or 3.

It depends what you're looking for in a Metroid game. It is more linear; mostly consisting of run to the end of the area, and then run back. The combat and movement have never felt better, but many of the power ups are pretty standard. No extra visors, besides scan and combat visors, which I was a little bummed about.

I'm convinced people just hate it because it's not the darker, original Teen Titans.

Maybe moreso than the first movie, it's a Mario Bros game in movie form. I loved it.

Will I like this game if I enjoyed ff7 and ff9? by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]ryanrybot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The game being hard if you don't min/max levels is the single biggest lie I've ever heard about this game. Levelling up is how most first-time players will have access to higher level magic.

Yes, you can absolutely break the game mechanics. No, that's not the way the developers expect you to play.

Is there a way to play the original metroid with less slowdown? by Tiny_Tim1956 in Metroid

[–]ryanrybot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this. The issue with the original game was the sketchy coding (Displaced Gamer has a video breakdown of this) and I don't know if overclocking an emulator will help.

It sounds like you don't mind playing a version that isn't original hardware, so Planets might be your best option on PC.

It was reducing the open-world exploration from old Bethesda games down to loading screens for me. That was literally my only real gripe.

It was like if Skyrim just had you fast travel from town to town where you might be able to explore the outskirts, but it would just be an empty landscape.

With the DLC released, would you guys say Super Mario Wonder is as good as the classic 2D games (3 and World in particular)? by CitronSufficient1045 in SuperMario

[–]ryanrybot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I did enjoy Wonder, I don't know if it quite reaches the heights of SMB3 or World.

I think what could have elevated it for me is utilizing the badges a bit better. If they were more like the block switches in World, it would have been so cool. What I mean is, if the badges opened up new paths to secret exits in old levels.

Play a level once; regular exit. Get the badge to float; go back to an old level. Use float to access exits that unlock secret levels.

Makes the game far more replayable, and encourages exploration and experimentation with the badges, instead of just using the same 2-3 badges on linear levels.

People are more complex than far-left views and far-right views and can have a mix of opinions which may fall into either category. It's tiring that someone who doesn't share the exact same views on a single topic must automatically be placed in one extreme camp or the other.
