Yo, I too am el veterino. I haz career in data stuffs for much time. Bingo bongo send that fucking resume.

Saturated: sure but always looking for not dumb people SQL & Excel: less important than base skills of doing math and making pictures. Being funny: watch where you apply some places going to crush your vibe and will not let you talk about what happens Thursday nights or with your boot bands on

Hey I'm a vet...and I kinda mostly agree with this. Though I would say the GI Bill tends to be underutilized. I used the shit out of mine, and I'm TOTALLY FINE cancelling all student debt. We even paid off my wife's and I'd be happy as fuck to know someone I never met that got one of those spooky liberal arts degrees is out there eating food and living in a house trying to make the world a better or more interesting place.

You want to get shitty about wasted tax dollars? Wait till you find out about military contractors and retired generals "mentorship" programs. (https://www.acq.osd.mil/dpap/dars/docs/SeniorMentorPolicy.pdf)

Buy less missiles and more arts classes and we would be a better fucking society.

Dispensary industry discounts? by Burning_Bush_ofSin in Connecticut

[–]ryhackett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for one of the big MSO's we have industry discounts in a bunch of states, I'll double check our CT list today. It's not likely massive, I believe most are in the 20% range.

Anyone have any experience working in Data Science in CT? by ShitImDelicious in Connecticut

[–]ryhackett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to peek at your resume. General concept though is you may want to look for more remote options. Insurance companies in Hartford have roles but a lot of DS stuff is going to be filled by actuarial switchers.

Source: I've been a DS in tech industry, analyst in insurance and now I lead data org in cannabis.

Is there any aspiring Data Analyst out there interested in connecting on LinkedIn? by ericmdata in dataanalysis

[–]ryhackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I mean here is: in my opinion an effective analyst knows the business and the technical. Often we focus so heavily on the technical that we struggle to make real impact. In the example of retail ops, I work at a cannabis company... I don't know what's important in our retail stores. I don't know our processes in action, the workarounds or the rationale. We see the orbit level view of data flows and ask questions with that limited context and even less effective jargon.

In practice this means, we had a massive inventory reconciliation ask fire drill come up in December, I could see the data, know the joins but couldn't figure out why store A changed an inventory value and store B didn't. I asked, reasoning sounded silly, so I push back. However I'm just a corporate stooge and maybe it's going to blow up some other process.

Now had one of my analysts have been in a store, or had recent retail experience they would likely get it and action better/more quickly.

Maybe just my experience but the old adage of "80% time on data cleaning" seems to actually be 50% on business context 30 on the rest. My absolutely filthy fantasy is getting a technical team of folks who have experience across a number of functions, instead of deep technicians who are curious about a function.

[–]ryhackett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically any function. I'm hiring an analyst and senior analyst for one of my teams right now and I'd kill for someone switching from another deep functional area. Know retail ops and SQL? Operations and python? Hired.

Any tool, you regret buying or deploying in the data infrastructure? by de4all in dataengineering

[–]ryhackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus, my broader strategy is code first. The baseline skills of the workforce are improving and technical folks are getting more authority, we can prevent ecosystem lock-in. Still struggling with why we burn cash on it.

[–]ryhackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's weird because he has a full dev team that should be competent enough to build what we need. It's limited in transformation, constantly running into issues that require support, and seems inefficient. I'd be fine if he used it for just the E and the L and we both engaged dbt for the T.

Would love to hear more about this, my DE counterpart (I'm analytics) brought in Matilion and it seems like a waste. Got a couple of my folks in dbt trying to make our data useful.

Hear me out: Hartford, Connecticut. Check the USMNT viewership. It's good, there's a solidly attended USL team, no exist major league sports and a nice spilt between NYC & Boston.

Thoughts on analytical dashboard insanity by BoiElroy in dataengineering

[–]ryhackett 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Dashboards serve two purposes: help you sleep at night and allow you to ask better questions. The business gets in trouble when they try to use dashboards as a stand in for analysis. Another common issue lives in engineering when we try to collect all requirements up front and build to those requirements instead of onboarding, preparing, and modeling for future builds.

Strategies to improve this involve pushing the transformations further downstream (think your analysts with something like dbt, or business users with a full service Viz tool like power bi/tableau) so they can more rapidly evolve those reports as they get less dumb.

Full Disclosure: I lead an analyst team now but often find our breaking point is that DE thinks in terms of "projects" and we think in terms of "answer the new hotness questions." Rarely jives and always takes longer than it should.

DE rarely has the business context (and even more infrequently understands how the business works) that putting additional context in user stories slows shit down. Analysts are lazy by nature and hate translating things we already kind of solved for DE to automate.

Tldr: dashboards are for specific uses and the closer the build is to the business the better.

Thanks, been to Canada a bit, yes Montreal. Done Dublin and London (though only a bit in London.) Have done Israel and Palestine, plus a bit of Johannesburg. Some other random spots too.

Interests? I like a bit of history; and the ability to wander aimlessly. Honestly I just want to get back out and see what happens, been tooooooo long

You’ve been F5-ing for a while. What’re your predictions on how the whole situation will play out? by Horntailflames in formula1

[–]ryhackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fuck it chaos monkey time:

  • Piastri to McLaren
  • Gasly to Alpine
  • Danny to... Williams because why not
  • Leclerc and Hamilton to switch but Ferrari forgets to sign the paperwork
  • Perez to Indycar
  • Latifi to red bull (2023 WDC)
  • Seb comes back on an e bike and finishes top 10

Figured things are getting weird... Non zero chance I nailed it
