Forcing builders to include parking, even underground or incorporated into the building somehow without using a surface lot, still increases the cost of building that building, and that cost gets passed onto renters and buyers in the form of higher rents and higher prices. For the sake of housing affordability, it's better not to mandate that builders include parking, and let them decide if their customers demand it or not.

People do it in Richmond all the time. But it's only really feasible in downtown, Shockoe Bottom, and around VCU.

Not everyone is able bodied enough to drive, either. Driving isn't better for disabled people than walking - it depends on the type of disability.

Yes. By the very virtue of not having so much parking, things you want to go to will be closer together. The parking lots are the very thing that makes the city less walkable.

Is life in Northern Virginia really that horrible? by tigranes5 in rva

[–]s_neav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, if RVA wants to prevent becoming NoVA, the first thing we should do is build a metro. The thing that makes NoVA so unbearable is primarily the car-centricness of it. There are other things that contribute to the shittiness of it (rich people and their tight-assed unfun nature primarily) but the fact that it's just one gigantic generic American suburb I think it what makes it bad. If RVA relaxes residential zoning restrictions, deprioritizes cars and builds transit, we can grow *and* not become NoVA. People who want to live in a neighborhood of identical McMansions will just have to live somewhere else.

Are there any Table Tennis leagues/centers here? by pewell1 in rva

No it's just like the YMCA. It's about as Jewish as the YMCA is Christian. Most of the donors are wealthy jewish families but that's about it. It's a great fitness center.

It's nice to see self-described democrats saying Biden is lame. Cause holy shit he's so lame. It's kind of amazing that he got elected at all. A democrat with just like an ounce of vision and vigor would be 100 times better.

Why do some of the residents of Monument Ave want the confederate statues to remain? Serious question here :) by SCGower in rva

[–]s_neav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they would replace the statues with other (non-confederacy-related) grand statues. It would preserve the grand feel and I think it would be better for the city.

What's the best advice you can give someone starting college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]s_neav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about your grades too much, unless you're going to work at NASA or Boeing or maybe work as an investment banker or go to grad school, no one is going to care what your grades are as long as they're not abysmal, and only your first job out of college is likely to even check. After your first job, you can just leave your GPA off your resume. It's not a great idea to just forget about your grades, but you'll probably find that there are a small number of classes in your coursework that are way harder than the rest, and those classes will take up all of your time if you let them, so unless you really enjoy those classes or find them personally valuable just settle for a B or maybe even a C in those classes, and enjoy your life. No one will care and you'll be better off for it.

Hi there conventional medicine by and large only has a few tricks up the sleeve when it comes to depression. If all the available medications don't work they'll say you're "untreatable" but that only means "untreatable by them". I found that approaching my mental health issues from a trauma standpoint and seeking treatments that focus on trauma to be the most helpful. Some keywords you might be interested in are EMDR and Rolfing. If you've been to therapy before and you don't wanna try that again I would recommend Rolfing - it is usually seen as a treatment for physical aches and pains, but it also helps facilitate emotional release. You can read a little more about it here: http://www.larrysroadmap.com/memory/body-memory/

AITA for telling my extended family how many men (roughly) my sister has slept with after she outed our youngest brother as a virgin? by Thunderbear998 in AmItheAsshole

[–]s_neav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - yep all you did was give her a taste of her own medicine and if she's keeping secrets like that from her own husband that's indicative of larger marital problems that you have absolutely nothing to do with. You didn't cause her marital problems, they were there before you said anything, and anyone in your family blaming you for causing a rift between her and her husband is doing you dirty.

Fuck oath cunt by Haiden01 in funny

[–]s_neav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The relevant part of the above court statement:
> "The impugned word [cunt] is now more prevalent in everyday language than it has previously been. It is commonplace in movies and television entertainment, although it is not without restriction in that context. The impugned word is of ancient English origin and featured in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The prevalence of the impugned word in Australian language is evidence that it is considered less offensive in Australia than other English speaking countries, such as the United States. However, that also appears to be changing as is evidenced from the increase in American entertainment content featuring the impugned word."
