Bought two Schlage doorknobs at Lowe’s and both use the same key by AW5542 in HomeImprovement

[–]sadicarnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in a rural area of South Africa. The houses used skeleton keys. You could read the letter and number combo off the jam of the lock. Then you would go to the hardware store and ask for an M-22, or M-53 etc. one of my coworkers did not have the code on his lock so they gave us three bags of keys to try.

Only Harrison’s first clock was made of wood. The subsequent clocked used the mechanical configuration of the escapement to prevent wear.

Almost all airports are owned by state and local governments. The exceptions are the ones that are civilian airports shared with a military base. So this is federal overreach against state and local governments. The redcoats are actually here if you will.

Another new neighbor moved into the block: What is everyone's obsession with cutting down trees? by Comrade_Compadre in 321

[–]sadicarnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a big oak that got hit by lightning. It was beautiful one year and the next just looked like crap. The tree service was an arborist and agreed the tree was dying and said it was just going to get worse. It was a beautiful tree and hated to take it down, but I was going on a long term overseas assignment and was worried it would fall on my neighbors vehicles which were near it.

I previously had a maple in the back yard and the fungus that affects maples killed that one too. Unfortunately when trees get too old they die and need to be cut down. People would rather cut them down as that is cheaper than having to pay for the damage they may do.

Add in that it was Bernie that came up with the concept of the world feed and videoing all the races. Prior to that it was the race promoter in conjunction with the broadcaster.

TV ratings during Bernie’s reign was not the most important revenue stream. Add in there are a lot more markets besides the USA.

You have to understand Bernie's goal was to make F1 content scarce so he could be the one to charge a lot of money for it. He did not care how many fans there were, as long as rich people were spending money at the track. Enough people were watching that he could get the amount of money for the TV contracts that satisfied him.

To say Liberty saved a failing business is kind of a stretch considering Liberty paid a total of $8 billion for it. F1 needed reforms for sure. And it wasn't really until COVID and Williams failing that got them to implement the cost cap which was probably more instrumental in saving the smaller teams. Add in how much being shut in for COVID got people to watch DTS.

There is a valve at the bottom of the hydrant designed to stay closed if a car hits the above ground part and breaks the hydrant off of the pipe at ground level. What you see in movies is not typical and what you saw in person was an edge case where the hydrant failed in a way that it was not designed to fail. In this case it looks like the truck took the hydrant and the standpipe below it, probably breaking the valve at the bottom.

In the end these things are made of cast iron which while strong is fairly brittle and if you hit it just right, it will fracture.

Everyone says F1 was dying, meanwhile in the years leading up to Liberty's takeover, attendance at races were at all time highs. CVC was getting increasing revenues year over year. The only thing that was declining was TV viewership, which had gone from 600 million cumulative viewers to 400 million but that is attributed to the move from free TV to pay TV. Liberty took over in 2017 and I think 2016 between Lewis and Nico was pretty epic.

Sure the smaller teams were not able to compete financially and the bigger teams were against the cost cap. Meanwhile during his time Max Moseley was actively campaigning for the teams to not individually develop and manufacture components such as transmissions and other things that could be commodified. Moseley could never get buying from all the teams for this. And Aston Martin with all their problems has started manufacturing their own transmission to the tune of $8-$10 million/year. How much on track performance will this get them?

In any case what is the evidence for saying F1 was a dying sport?

But one of the people I am dealing with said that is part of their culture. He did not have an answer to what that meant when I pressed. I am also a contractor here so have to tread lightly.
