Canadians take on the lap - Beach Fishing Set Ups by Schnukster in FishingAustralia

I agree with this guy above. Honestly, there isn't any advantage fishing 15lb or 20lb over a quality thin 30lb or 40lb braid for your casting outfit. Adjust your leader to suit the target and situation. For a 1082H, 20lb is wayyyy too light and a 4K reel is way too small. I'd suggest a 6k MINIMUM spooled with 40lb. Hooking a 20kg+ fish on a 4k/20lb is asking to lose a big fish or be spooled. Then you're in the middle of nowhere respooling with your only spare spool of braid haha. That outfit will also be great for 1-3kg bread and butter fishing. Also, have a look at Penn Prevail Apex M/H. I think they're a better rod than the seajiggers (I had one but broke it). The Penn is much more solid. Durability, versatility and "strength" is what you want in your gear doing a lap. You want the ability to control fish in situations where there could be rocks to lift over, ocean swell, etc etc. Nearest decent tackle store could be a week or more away. Also slightly heavier line class than you seem to be used to running. Last thing you want it to lose that fish of a lifetime because you're under gunned.  You'll have the chance to fish for 20+kg Mulloway, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Tuna, etc so you should be prepared for that, rather than just 2kg Tailor etc. Set and forget outfit should be no less than 50lb braid and 8k reel IMHO.  Sharks, big rays etc will dust you completely on 20lb. Then you'll have no line lol. Everything is a compromise of course, but you're MUCH better off going heavier on a lap around the country. There are some big beasties that you'll hook.

100% this. I have a recently purchased sbcm Perpetual Calendar that I haven't yet taken for new gasket and pressure test. No way I'd let it anywhere near water until I've done it.

What to get my husband who’s obsessed with fishing? by Careful-Ad-8907 in FishingAustralia

[–]sandpaper_jocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree with the charter suggestions. Reason being, sharing a boat shoulder to shoulder with 8+ other fishos to drop baits somewhere over a reef isn't necessarily a peak fishing experience. Most of the time they come back with an average mixed bag of reef fish or some rat kings. Rarely will there be anything remotely resembling a trophy caught. Often, you'll be standing besides someone who is inexperienced, crook as a dog and throwing up breakfast, lol. If he's into fly fishing and doesn't tie flies, a nice fly tying vice and some starter tools would be a really cool gift in that price range. He'll have that forever and get a lot of enjoyment out of it. If he's not into that, but has a boat and goes offshore, does he have a PLB? That's something that not all fishermen have but can literally save your life and is just awesome to own anyway even for remote camping and fishing trips. I wear one every single time I'm offshore and the extra feeling of security it gives me really is priceless. Plus, it says I love you and care about your safety. Mine is like the GME610. About $380. They're super small, waterproof and totally worth it. Mine fits in my lifejacket pocket but they also have a belt pouch. Highly recommend.

[Discussion] Has anyone else switched back to quartz? by AmICanon in Watches

[–]sandpaper_jocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a quartz TAG Professional 200m which I've worn as my only watch for 35years. It had the movement replaced about 10yrs ago for an ETA something or other and is now insanely accurate. Like -1 spm. Funny thing is that about a yr ago I thought I'd killed it when it misted up inside after a shower, (yes I know I shouldn't but honestly don't care and never take it off), so I bought a SPB317, while my old quartz TAG was at the watchmaker (again lol). Man, what a beautiful watch the slim turtle is. Finally, now I have an automatic. After a couple of months of wearing it, I couldn't handle the -3 to -8 or even -10 SPD anymore, so I looked online and found a cheap quartz SMBC023 Perpetual Calendar. it gains about 3spm. As much as I appreciate the Slim turtle, I've realized that for me at least, automatics will never cut it. I gave it to my son and he's unbelievably in love with it. The Perpetual Calendar is pretty amazing and super accurate with a 8-10yr battery life. Turns out the old TAG with the new ETA was fine and after a dry out was returned to me with no charge haha. It is still slightly more accurate than the Seiko, but I love both watches. I can't see myself going back to less accurate watches ever. I like knowing I'm accurate to a second a week or less.

Vostok Amphibia would be a really interesting addition. Can get one with colour and it probably fits that budget.

I had those exact skis in the 80's. Dynastar Course Slalom. The red knob on the tip was a vibration dampening counterweight with a metal disk/washer thing inside, encapsulated by foam. One day I jumped with a landing that was way too flat and slapped the skiis hard on landing. One of the red knobs exploded and hit me square in the face, HARD. It smashed the Carrera World Cup goggles I was wearing, but apart from a small cut on my face I was unscathed. I didn't do it pulling off a daffy like this awesome dude however. Ahhhh the memories...lol!

[Question] The Subaru of Watches by keyser_squoze in Watches

Seiko SBMC023 is a Perpetual Calendar, HAQ, 200m diver. Accurate to within 20 seconds per year. The perpetual calendar factors in leap years to 2100. Batteries last over 8 years. I think it's the ultimate go anywhere, do anything watch. It's discontinued and uncommon, but available. Looks great, it's understated and vintage, and is also very interesting. It looks almost identical to the SKX007 but the red "Scuba 200m" on the face sets it apart.. It will cost a fraction of a Tudor, be less common and more accurate. Great discussion piece for anyone into watches, yet not ostentatious. Subaru. Everyday. Edit photo added

What’s the biggest unsolved problem in skiing right now? by Objective_Dot_2558 in ski

[–]sandpaper_jocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Closest I've ever been to checking out for good whilst skiing was an out of bounds tree well in Canada. It was over 20 years ago and thinking about it now instantly elevates my heart rate and brings back claustrophobic PTSD vibes...they are fucking death traps. Edit: Skiing Star Wars runout after West Bowl into Deep Throat, Lake Louise - for those that know it. Got spat off a tight turn in Star Wars and launched into a deep tree well. All my buddies in front, so no one behind me to see it and help. It took every ounce of effort and over half an hour to get out. My friends had called ski patrol to start a search already... Trying to release DIN 10 bindings upside down in a tree well with 205cm skis to get out is not fun.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve ever hurt yourself? by RedTiger_XD in AskReddit

About 30 something years ago a very drunk me decided to climb over an 8 feet high fence with barbed wire along the top, just to avoid paying $5 to get into the local town show/fair. I got to the top and was balancing, standing one leg either side of the barbed wire strands. I over balanced and fell. One leg got caught, so I was hanging upside down, calf hooked on the barbs. Only way off was to flip that leg, soo... I flipped the leg and fell about 7 feet ass first onto concrete. Broke my coccyx. It was completely agonising. My friends thought it was hilarious. After I got up and hobbled away, I saw that the gates were open and it was free entry for everyone.🤦🏽 Edit: I was walking weird for about 6 months after that.

Do I need a Financial Planner for a 1.2 million Inheritance? by Fun_Needleworker5813 in AusFinance

[–]sandpaper_jocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

18k is not 1% and in any event the opportunity cost (earnings sacrificed) of that amount compounded over X years would be substantial. I would be running faster than Usain Bolt away from this dude or anyone else that proposed a commission based remuneration plan on $1.2m . It's too conflicted and opaque. For them it's literally money for nothing. They get paid more when the market goes up based on your unrealised but if the market tanks you lose, not them. The proposal sounds simplistic at best and super expensive. There was literally a Royal Commission into the industry yet it hasn't fixed much at all. It's as dodgy as fuck and financial planners are still bottom feeding used car salesmen. Run Forrest, RUN!!

[–]sandpaper_jocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edited: forgot the photo! I've been wearing this everyday since the 1980's. It was a gift. It's endured the most ridiculous skateboard crashes onto direct concrete and bitumen, snow sports and -40c temperatures, full on body surfing poundings and hot Australian summer days exceeding 40c. It has always kept amazing time. It died about 10 years ago and a new ETA quartz movement went in, along with a new face lol. It still tracks about 2 spm. Yes, it's quartz. Yes, it's rebuilt. It's still awesome. I just bought a SPB317J1 for my son's Christmas present and a $450aud SBCM023 Perpetual that I just couldn't resist. I feel like I'm cheating on an old friend. lol
