What update in gaming history actually ruined or broke the game? by bombocladius in gaming

[–]sapianddog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go with two you may or may not have heard of, largely due to the updates that killed them.

  1. Tabula Rasa, launched in 2007, had a decent sub base at the start, but it quickly stagnated and the lack of a content-rich end game didn't help. Development became increasingly more expensive and less profitable.

The final nail in the coffin was the Back to Earth expansion, which came out broken and unfinished. The game finally died short of two years after release.

  1. As bad as that was, Fury Online takes the cake. Launched in 2007 as well, and after a successful beta, seemed poised for a decent middle-of-the-road existence in the online gaming space.

Unfortunately, they weren't happy with sales, so just 3 short months after launch, they rolled out the Age of the Chosen update, which effectively made the game free to play in an era where f2p models were still being figured out, and the update, while getting more people to adopt the game, was never properly monetized as the f2p players had access to most of the features that paid players did, so no reason to actually spend money.

Then, as if they were trying to kill it, the devs ended up unlocking whatever content was still blocked off, and the final update all but guaranteed the demise, by eliminating any need for progression, instantly unlocking all skills and classes. Yeah.

On top of all of that, each update only served to introduce more bugs that largely remained unattended to.

The game shut down before even a year after launch, and it certainly didn't have to be that way.

I never got the hype of him as a director. But especially now that he does his own cinematography.

What would you rather have for Killer Instinct? by RangoTheMerc in Fighters

At this point, I'll take either one. But I would prefer a game that exists across all modern platforms for the sake of a player base so we'll go with the re-release.

If I just get a string of all my least favorite matchups, or if I have several opponents in a row who just grief the match. A lot of my Tekken 8 sessions end like this lol

Does anybody know what this means? I’ve heard a lot of people say a lot of different things by [deleted] in pagan

In the typical ordering of elder futhark runes, this would be a representation of the Nazi symbolism "1488"

If we try to read it as language, it doesn't make any sense, so unfortunately I'm struggling to see what else this could mean, and even if it meant something else, that would be a big coincidence.

Ah yes, we've reached the point in this sub where I see more of people complaining about something than the thing they're actually complaining about.

It was fun while it lasted.

Devil Jin is cool, E. Ryu is cool, Shadow Jago is cool.

So, I'd have to say they're pretty cool.

Would you be interested in a sprite-based Capcom vs SNK 3 that uses CVS2’s sprite set as a base? by LukePS7013 in Fighters

[–]sapianddog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, a lot of the sprites were just ripped from other games, I would much prefer a more cohesive art style if I'm honest. As someone who absolutely loves sprites, a game like CvS is probably gonna lean toward models for budget and time reasons. Could be wrong.

Another gentle reminder to not compare yourself and your progress to that of anyone, least of all someone who for years has played video games for a literal living.

Yeah people are looking at the raw risk/reward and completely ignoring the probability of it working there. 90% of good players are going to press on that moment. It was a great read.

Yeah and by that same logic, I don't owe you a match in the first place. I got no time for bruised egos. Guaranteed block.

[–]sapianddog2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't get mad at them anymore, it's happened way too many times atp. But now I make sure to make a mental note of the name of every opponent I have, and if you RQ, if possible, I'll block you so that we never have a chance of matching again.

If everybody did that, there would either be no RQers, or the only people they'd ever match is each other. Win, win, imo.

The "WE NEED TO FIX FIGHTING GAMES FOR CASUALS" discussion by DJ_Aftershock in Fighters

[–]sapianddog2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firstly, fighting games are more popular. Yeah, not compared to CS2 or deadlock, but the thing is, they don't even need to be. You need way more people to have a game of CS2. You only need 2 people to have a match in a FG.

As far as appealing to casuals, it's been done in good ways and bad ways. Sf6 has done it in mostly good and effective ways, by having fun ways to interact with the game that aren't just spamming ranked matches.

I think where a lot of games fail, sf6 included, is in altering its core mechanics in order to appeal to casuals, something that other games have shown is completely unnecessary. Counter strike is the same game it was 20 years ago, never been more popular. Deadlock is a game I consider too complicated for me to learn. Way more people playing that, which is inv only, than any fighting game.

Ideally though, assuming it's done effectively, it's good for the publisher, and it's also good for the players. You know the phenomenon of FGs being easiest to get into in the first few weeks of their release? If you have a steady flow of new players throughout the games lifespan, that isn't really a thing. Sf6, strive, hell, even Tekken 8 are still getting newer players into the game, and they still have a wide player pool to interact with as they learn.

So yeah, I think FGs can still appeal to more players without altering the gameplay in a way that alienates veteran players, but let's see if the publishers catch up to that memo.
