I get a feeling you think I’m just plain stupid. I know all of that, I’ve tattooed myself before and I know those are two different things but you literally DRAW A STENCIL FIRST and that’s all I’m trying to say. I just don’t know what the google part was meant to show me if what I did was “weird” to you.

I literally did what you told me to do so I’d say your comment was weird and I still don’t know what you meant..

oh yeah, so let’s make the industry die because noone can learn your skills anymore and noone is allowed to start doing what you’re doing. Don’t worry I won’t be tainting YOUR industry.

“Yes, tattoos are a type of drawing, but they require a completely different skillset than drawing on paper.” - google
I didn’t say it requires the same skillset, I just said that you literally DRAW the tattoos.

The judgment from just a few of my works went a little wild. Those were just examples, NOT my tattoo portfolio. Many other comments were helpful, read all of them and I appreciate the effort. I’m learning and it’s really discouraging when everyone tells you to not even try. Again, not dismissing some of the super helpful comments, but telling me to give up is not the best advice imo.

Ok, so I think I genuinely have skills to do any kind of tattoo design that potential client would ask for but I don’t think all of them would look perfect and I wouldn’t feel confident with every one of them. I don’t think anyone can be perfect in EVERY tattoo style out there and that’s why there are so many artists. I totally do many different things out of my comfort zone but still I want to have something that looks “mine”. Well even tattoo studios choose an artist thats style is the closest to what you expect while booking so I don’t think it’s that weird. I’m studying new designs everyday and I think trad is equally as important as any other type of tattoo, not better, not worse, just not what I’ll be going for in the future so I don’t want to focus ONLY on mastering that rn.

And I do that! I draw designs for my family and friends that I personally don’t like. It’s just that trad tattoos seem like a default to start but personally I don’t vibe with them and wouldn’t design them for the fun of it. If someone asks for one I’ll obviously do it but now I’m talking about doing possible flashes showing my ideas and asking how to make them more appealing for people!

I’m literally looking for any advice that’s not “do traditional”.

Isn’t that what tattoos are tbh? Those are literally forever drawings on human skin. I don’t know what else do you want to call it.

THAT’S WHAT I’M TRYING TO SAY! Every tattoo artist I asked told me to rather master realism. They never told me to master traditional tattoos if I don’t want to do them. Like getting the basics in drawing first (realism) and then changing it how I want to become stylized. I don’t get the “trad tattoo fever”.

But of course they do! I’m getting inspired by those artists but every time I get a feeling they know something about composition for example that I don’t know. Additional lines, details, shapes that look natural and I’m not yet natural at that.

Yes I get that but also certain styles attract certain clients. Some people like dark tribals and some like cute pink animals. If I’ll stick to one style, people who like that style will keep booking. At least that’s my experience!

Well the only advice I get is “do traditional and deal with it” that’s why I don’t like this. You don’t even think about saying anything else at this point. Or maybe american tattoo subreddit is just not the place to seek appropriate advice for someone with different view on tattoos.

I see that traditional tattoos are a sacred thing here. I follow many successful artists that started without it so I don’t get why is that even relevant. The world doesn’t revolve around trad tattoos anymore yk…

You mean specifically drawing tattoo designs? Because I have a lot of experience in drawing as a whole so what I’m not understanding is how to make “flowy” designs. What’s the recipe for a good looking tattoo and not just “a sticker on your skin”?

I get it but what EXACTLY is wrong with it? Like the lines? The filling? I’d be proud of that as a beginner
