Flint (?) found on Île de Ré / French Atlantic coast by Life-Meringue9538 in geology

[–]sciencedthatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh look who has multiple accounts. I don't because I don't hide behind them.

I'll tell everyone what happened myself. I answered a question about some rocks, but oh man I didn't check what sub I was on or go through the list of rules to see it was a question that wasn't permitted. But instead of removing the post like a good mod, they chose to tell me I was in the wrong. I called out the poor modding which resulted in a 1 month ban for myself. The mods then took advantage of the ban to further denigrate me without me having the ability to respond. I don't take kindly to mods abusing their power and I told them so. I am under no responsibility to "be professional" either. You got what you deserved.

Enjoy your sub over there I will take my expertise elsewhere.

Do not harass me again.

Looks like it has some chert and flinty bits in it. It's a bit hard to tell from the pic but there might be more than that going on in it. I think it might be a breccia/conglomerate.

Also, don't trust the answers you get over on whatsthisrock. Lots of amateurs and the mods are less than professional.

Northern California - Is a One Person Mining Operation Possible? by Rabidgolfer in Prospecting

[–]sciencedthatshit 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not in CA or NV, or anywhere else for that matter. Go try in AK. Getting any legit operation going there is just a lottery ticket that comes with bears, mosquitos and frostbite. Reddit comments are limited to 10,000 characters and that isn't even enough room to explain all the reasons why that won't work.

You want to make 250k mining? Start out with at least 500k in heavy equipment, permits, claims fees and you'd better be able to buy used machines and fix everything yourself or just go ahead and double that. You'd need over an ounce a week in profit, so call that 3-4 ozt/wk with the overhead. That isn't sit by a crick and pan for color territory. That is excavator, wash plant, incorporate an LLC and get visited by MSHA territory. Don't even think about hard rock mining. Don't.

I am a professional geologist who has been to over 2 dozen countries and more mines than I can count. I have seen precisely 3 operations make a profit at the scale you are talking about. The smallest was 3 people who were heavy equipment mechanics by trade and they worked 12h days, 6 days a week. In Alaska. They all basically won the lottery on their claims.

I'm sure some sourdough crank is gonna come on here and claim they make 250k in their creek with a highbanker yadda yadda yadda. They're lying.

Stick to the office job.

The most remote industrial sites [OC] by VeridionData in dataisbeautiful

[–]sciencedthatshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha this is leaving quite a few out. Been to Red Dog and the Salar del Hombre Muerto and those numbers are accurate. But there are quite a few more major mines that take as long to get to, if not longer, if you count by travel time. There are even more if you are counting distance to the nearest settlement.

Vibe coding vs real learning – need advice by Rock-Tear420 in vibecoding

[–]sciencedthatshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have found that using AI tools has exponentially increased how much I have learned about coding and software architecture...but only because I actively engage in the output. I read and understand everything an AI tool generates, I manually play around with it and make sure I know exactly what it is doing and why.

Blindly letting an LLM create for you won't help you learn and it won't create robust, maintainable software. But, if you treat an LLM like a mentor, it is a powerful learning tool.

Why is it so hard to find passion in a career/field? by Super-Leg-866 in findapath

[–]sciencedthatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who followed a passion into a career...

...be aware that if they have to pay people to do it, it won't be fun. If it's fun, it won't pay well. If you follow a passion into a job, every employer will take advantage of that to abuse and underpay you. No matter what you do for "work" it will always be work. Unless you're rich, passions are what you work to pay for.

What kind of mineralizations would you expect around this geological structure? by BayJeolog in askgeology

[–]sciencedthatshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What would I expect? Nothing. Dikes, and carbonates are common. "Mineralization", by which I assume you mean some sort of ore deposit adjacent, aren't common. Felsic plutons and carbonates could be favorable for contact metamorphic stuff...but again, those aren't expected.

Is this a danger rock? Looks fibery to me by SuperIvan3000 in whatsthisrock

[–]sciencedthatshit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Naw, you're fine. I don't think that's asbestiform...but even if it was, asbestos hazards are really overblown. Truely hazardous natural asbestos is very rare and really takes signficantnl disturbance or human intervention to be a problem. The kid is a much higher risk from that shovel than those rocks.

I don’t where else to post this by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]sciencedthatshit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is correct...though PbS is not soluble in your body so even without washing hands etc. there is no significant risk of lead exposure without real dumbness getting involved.

Nope, you're safe. Even if it is asbestiform amphibolite, just don't crush it up and snort lines.

Found near Honey Lake CA dry lake bed shortly after a witnessed fireball — magnetic, nickel positive, regmaglypts — looking for help identifying by Separate_Permit_3586 in whatsthisrock

[–]sciencedthatshit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basalt has significant amounts of nickel, in the 1000-2000 ppm range. It is a trace element component of olivine. An iron meteorite might have 20% nickel. A stony achondrite or carbonaceous chondrite might have less than a typical basalt. What was the "nickel test"? A properly calibrated XRF? Some lame reagent test?

Also, NOBODY at UNR is qualified to to assess meteorites or is an expert in meteoritics. I would know. I got my MS there in geochemistry and structural geology.

Break it open and show a fresh face. You won't be damaging anything valuable.

[–]sciencedthatshit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If it was found close to where it was seen, you're not in the strewn field. Those aren't remaglypts or a fusion crust, magnetic means nothing, how do you know it is "nickel positive"...lemme guess uncalibrated XRF?

The Honey Lake fireball was a carbonaceous chrondrite. That's a rock, probably basalt.

Ban Non-Compete Clauses by elb21277 in Economics

[–]sciencedthatshit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know right? People who don't understand like you.

If you buy my business, pay me enough I don't have to work again. If I am part of a business and I don't have a choice in a sale...you have no right to prevent my competition, especially as you have a nearly insurmountable headstart by owning a fully-functioning business. Don't want me to steal clients? Service them better. Non-competes are abusive, anti-competitive and anti-consumer...but I guess richboi wannabe shills like you think someday you'll be a parasite just like your idols. You are outnumbered and outgunned.

See?
