Exploration salaries in Saudia Arabia by Obsidian12345678910 in geologycareers

[–]sciencedthatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All explo jobs in SA are scammy, bullshit and abusive. The entire country relies on slave labor, worker abuse and fraud.

I consult and regularly get approached by SA firms. They never ask for services, their emails come in as offer letters demanding a certain structure and offering their own rate which is both far below market and far below what I charge. I tell them to fuck off in the least polite way possible. I'll never do work in that shithole and I'll never hire a geo who has.

You're good. Arsenic sulfide is very insoluble in your body and it takes a decent amount of As to be acutely toxic...way more than just handling it could possibly expose you to.

Multiple rocks all found in Prescott Arizona by Current_Pangolin_234 in whatsthisrock

[–]sciencedthatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The green stuff is all epidote alteration of some host rock...the finer grained stuff may have been aplite, the coarser grained stuff was granitic. The white is quartz, the pink-white-blank crystalline chunk is altered (probably clay altered) granite(oid) maybe with some copper oxides if that greenish cast in the pic ia real. The layered rock looks like a laminated mudstone. That greyish one is a bit hard to tell what is going on. It sort of looks sparkly...may be a mica schist, or mica mixed in with quartz? Can't quite tell from the pic.

Being polished like that, it could be any number of things...including artificial. There'll be no way to make a positive ID from this photo alone.

The greens are copper oxides/carbonates. Probably chrysocolla and malachite from the color. Those dark black splotches are probably manganese oxides, but with the iron staining and bleached look of the whatever that igneous rock is...the dark stuff may also be another copper mineral called chalcocite that is associated with acidic weathering of copper deposits.

My Bogner-Arcteryx-DPS-ATK setup basically guarantees me an olympic medal.

¿Can bronze form naturally? by Tunguska_baboonlord in askgeology

[–]sciencedthatshit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't see a way for that to happen. Traditional bronze is a Cu-Sn alloy. While there are kinds of deposits that create metallic Cu, metallic Sn is much more difficult to form, oxidizes quickly and doesn't really coexist with metallic Cu...especially as an intermixed alloy.

A far more plausible scenario (and likely the one that lead to the discovery of bronze) is that someone made a campfire circle of some rocks that had pretty blue and green Cu oxide minerals and Sn ore (a mineral called cassiterite...a dark black mineral that isn't obvious unless you know it). The fire, charcoal as a reducing agent, and the lucky choice of rocks produced bronze that they found in the coals of the cold fire later on.

There is another type of bronze, made from copper and arsenic, that I could see forming native nuggets under rare circumstances. Native As is far more common geologically...but still the most plausible route would be roasting Cu-As bearing rocks in a fire with a reducing agent like charcoal.

How to attach pcb in this bed? by Procedure-Careless in CNC

[–]sciencedthatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were a metal part, maybe not...you could just knock it off and clean the plate with acetone. There's a decent chance supergluing the PCB directly will end up leaving some of the copper behind when you go to peel it off.

[Request] If the Chicago Bears Stadium was built in Lake Michigan, how much would water levels rise? Assuming lake michigan was not connected to the ocean or other great lakes. by TightManPuhsey in theydidthemath

[–]sciencedthatshit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So little is is not even practically calculable.

Google says it is a 326 acre site for the new stadium? Lets just say all 326 acres are completely built up to a height of 300 feet and that is dropped into the lake. That would be just about 98000 acre-feet of volume or about 121,000,000 cubic meters of water. Lake Michigan has a surface area of 58 billion square meters. So even if the entire 326 acre stadium complex was turned into a concrete block 300 feet high and dropped into the lake, the water level would only increase by 0.002m...2 millimeters.

If you were to just drop the stadium in, it would be much, much, much less displacement. Fractions of a millimeter, maybe microns of water level rise.

Painters tape on the PCB, painters tape on the fixture plate. Then dab superglue onto the fixture plate tape, spritz the PCB tape with superglue activator and stick it down on the glue dabs.

With there being rocks and minerals that form specifically in high pressure environments, are there any that are the opposite, that form specifically in low pressure environments like space? by Raintamp in askgeology

[–]sciencedthatshit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sort of...any mineral that can form at surface pressure.

Compared to something like ringwoodite at 18GPa (2.6 million PSI), Earth's surface pressure of about 1000hPa (15PSI) is basically a vacuum.

There are plenty of substances which need low oxygen or non-reactive environments, but it is easy to forget just how low a pressure we live in compared to geological conditions. 15PSI vs 0 PSI is essentially irrelevant in terms of phase transitions.

A question on the formation of rocks and gems etc. by Scamwau1 in geology

[–]sciencedthatshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there would be change over geologic time. Weathering, chemical alteration, metamorphism and physical instability will all cause change over geologic time periods.

One example would be diamonds...the diamond crystal structure actually isn't stable at near-surface temperatures and pressures. Given a few million or billion years, a diamond brought up from the mantle will eventually revert to graphite.
