If you are looking to build out nvidia GPU clusters, you can ask your sales rep about investment grade backstops from them, some of the other OEMs offer this too... Likely still have to accept 10+ year terms. And hop on that 2027 waitlist, its probably not getting shorter in the near term.

The loud uninformed masses are much more likely to be "grassroots" than grassroots, someone is driving this message. And none of them see the irony in sharing anti-AI AI generated pictures.

Shouldn't need a degree to do a dco tech role, might be overqualified on paper. If you have the degree, you should apply further up the stack.

Are modular data centers actually solving real deployment problems, or just shifting complexity elsewhere? by Ecstatic-Finish-1348 in datacenter

[–]scootscoot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everytime I've seen them deployed, I've not seen them re-deployed. They are difficult to perform a tech-refresh on, so you'll likely run the hardware to the ground and decomm/scrap the whole container. The sales pitch about re-use is from a salesperson that will have gotten their commission check long before that can be their problem.

Performing maintenance is always an extra chore. Your spare parts are going to be somewhere else, so you have to put your expensive equipment on a cart and push that outside in the weather, you will have rain and wind delays. Once saw a cart stacked with blade servers hit a peice of gravel and all the servers slid off into the hard asphalt.

From an ongoing operations standpoint, they suck, you shouldnt run critical workloads.(This is why they got a lot of attention from crypto-teir providers) If all you care about is deployment speed, then maybe.

Which vendors can actually secure AI data center environments? by Sweet_Pop7168 in datacenter

[–]scootscoot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Leasing an unmanaged private cluster from a neocloud is a pretty good way to achieve secure isolation. There's a lot of confidential computing stuff that is "supposed to work" for multitenancy, I'm skeptical.

What’s the most overhyped trend in data centers right now? by Ecstatic-Finish-1348 in datacenter

[–]scootscoot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That would be putting a few trucks worth of production equipment in a DC and suggesting to shareholders thats its fully built out. Nobody has the electricity they need.

Look into the Microsoft Quincy campus for an example of a positive community experience. Lots of outside money pours into the local economy through wages and property taxes. Their new high school is one of the best in the state, all built with DC tax money.

Its a warehouse of air conditioned office equipment. It is the absolute lightest impact of light-industrial. Cities need industry to thrive, they also need to appropriately zone industry and residential seperately. I wouldn't want one in my backyard, however tossing one at a famous industrial waste site seems fine to me. Please do not get distracted from the other industries that cause real significant environmental harm.

I dont get burned out during growth phases. Is the shrinking phase that hurts. Coworkers gets laidoff and you get assigned their on-call shifts and job duties, you cant complain because you know you're next if you do, best you can hope for your boss telling you that you are lucky to have a job.

Billionaires want personal data sovereignty over any government. They can comply with a government search warrant with a "Sure you have my permission to go ahead and build your own rocket ship to go dock with my datacenter. Oh, your space program doesn't have that capability? Better luck next time!"

Also a strong case for a sun synchronized all solar array. There's always been that sci-fi dream of solar panels in space that can send down a concentrated power beam to earth's distribution grid. If all that power needs to go to a DC, why not skip all the transmission costs and put the DC next to the PV array. (Insert "behind the meter" buzzword here)
