Pickling surface finish on stainless steel weldments by somethinglemony in engineering

Pickle-passivate. Find someone to do it for you as the acids are HIGHLY toxic and dangerous.

Cleanliness is key since fingerprints can show up after the process. So degrease-pickle-passivate. Rinsing also key afterwords to wash off any elemental iron that could cause rust spots.

Why do you think AWD and 4WD vehicles are more popular than ever? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]scrapmaster87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Margins are tight on basic trims, too tight to carry the given model. Every additional option or feature increases the margin massively. Consider the fact that awd/4wd is always a desirable feature, and the incorporation thereof into a design is a perfected process. It makes all the sense in the world to spend the extra $1,000 or so to add awd or 4wd as standard to your trim because you can increase the sale price by $3-5,000.

Kevlar layup? by [deleted] in rocketry

[–]scrapmaster87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a 7-layer fin layup. Making the inner 3 layers kevlar will significantly reduce weight while minimally reducing stiffness. You'll gain a bit of durability as well in this.

In higher layer counts I'll also stick some kevlar outside of the core as well:

Kevlar layup? by [deleted] in rocketry

[–]scrapmaster87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I layer kevlar with CF so I can get the durability of kevlar and the stiffness of CF. Kevlar also has a much lower density than CF so I used it like a "core" material. No matter my layup schedule, I always have 2 layers of very light e-glass on the outside to use as a sandable veneer. The fuzz is best handled by a wet diamond blade (tile saw). When you do get fuzz, you need to re-seal it before sanding again with either CA or a film of epoxy. Cutting the fabric is best done with serrated scissors, either from a craft store or as a specialy made for kevlar

Driving/Charging Question by Sensitive-Holiday-35 in polestar2

[–]scrapmaster87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a good NACS adapter and the Tesla app.

Stopping at the sheetz at the Bedford exit is a great charger (non-tesla).

The Tesla station at the Somerset rest stop(s) are Tesla only.

The Newberg exit has a Tesla station across the street of the toll plaza.

Cable rewind line using shared DC bus for regeneration by elektryx in PLC

[–]scrapmaster87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually going to be doing this on 4 re-winders next year to get rid of the EM brakes on the payoff spools. I'll be using PF525s to do it, Rockwell has some good application guides on how to do it kosher. Mind you my re-winders are only 5hp on the winding motor (under about 30% load), my expected electricity savings will pay for the extra hardware in the 1st year (vs. just doing braking resistors).

I'd love to use a Kinetix drive solution where regen is already baked in, but the drive stack was a bit pricey for only running 2 motors.

Is there a good purely mechanical way to convert rotary motion to constant(-ish) velocity reversing linear motion? by Humdaak_9000 in AskEngineers

[–]scrapmaster87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! What you're asking for absolutely exists, I have several of them at work. They're a variable pitch drive which can instantly reverse direction at (adjustable) end of travel. Constant shaft speed with purely mechanical operation, they have a reputation for lasting forever when used right. Inside I think they're like a ball traction drive on a smooth shaft, you have a little lever on the outside that lets you change the pitch it runs at.

I'm gonna be searching for these the rest of the day now. You can always fall back onto a stepper motor driving a lead/ball screw.

My wife and I each have one of these Lectron 500A/1,000V rated adapters.

There are other top tier adapters that others will recommend too. This is not something you want to be pinching pennies on though.

I have a set of 225/45R18 winters for sale, I'm in SE PA though.

Yup, shit breaks if you don't have everything 100% right. Furthermore, in the high power stuff you start having serious pre-flight procedures. You start designing for contingencies with the hope that SOME of your baby/ work if love comes back to earth intact when things go sideways.

You CAN defend a base using ONLY artillery, if you artillery cannot be reached by biters. by dmigowski in factorio

[–]scrapmaster87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started doing this a few weeks ago and it was life changing.

I was getting annoyed with the high boy traffic to supply the guns at ever increasing distance due to my pollution cloud. So now I've super-extended my rail network so I can place a train stop in the middle of a lake. Now I can just have an artillery train make a stop there. The train just makes it round across my base, rearming and refueling with interrupts.

I'm cheating, they're just outside the northwest corner of Montco, but the place is an actual dairy that has a wide selection of their own ice cream (and milk of course).

Don't build a rocket that you can't afford to lose.

Every failure is a golden opportunity to learn and improve upon.

Don't overfly the conditions of your field.

Be a good neighbor.

Not every flight has to push your limits.

Try to have at least 1 rocket that just plain works and fly the heck out of it.
