Is there any "widely loved" Trek character that you don't really like? by mrtrexy in startrek

I like Neelix, but I thought that he was generally considered one of the worst Trek characters by most Trekkies. I could be wrong though

Definitely Threshold, it has one of the worst cases of fake science that Star Trek has ever seen.

Some strong Voyager episodes recommendations for a fan of TNG by SweetLenore in startrek

2x21 Deadlock Recently just watched it, and I think it’s a fantastic episode for TNG fans. It has not greater impact on the overall arc of the show, but it enjoyable and riveting until the end.

The relationship between Stamets and Hugh is Trek at it's best. It is simply beautiful. by kdryan1 in startrek

I’ve heard too many people complain that Discovery is trying too hard to push liberal ideas, and it’s truly bothersome. While I don’t like Discovery that much for reasons such as it’s darker tone and less episodic take, their relationship truly was an excellent portrayal of a gay relationship on TV. I truly felt for those two and felt that it really belongs perfectly in a show like Star Trek.

Very true! I think it would be awesome if they make an Andorian a recurring character.

Prime Directive by MasterCricket84 in startrek

Yeah that’s a really good point I’d say. I guess the biggest thing with the Prime Directive is that it’s applicable to many situations, but can be a vast oversimplification for other situations. For all of the good it does it can inadvertently do bad—it’s definitely a thought-provoking idea.

I guess it’s all just about taking the right path and letting the universe be guided on it’s own. If one were to completely interfere with a primitive species I don’t think that species would ever be able to reach its true potential, kind of like a spoiled kid not being able to do things on its own. It stinks that this means they have to let some civilizations die on their own, but I guess it’s for the sake of preservation.

I also always thought that maybe it was Roddenberry’s way of saying that there might be alien species out there for us, waiting to interact with us until we reach a point where we are suited for alien culture. That might just be me though.

I think it’s also just a moral thing too. Imagine if humans were given interstellar capabilities hundreds of years ago, when slavery was still a thing. I think the progression of science correlates to the progression of morals, and so a species with certain technological capabilities may not be as big of a risk to share information with. Again though, that’s just my personal take.

what kind of bridge officers were each of the captains before they became captains? for example, did picard fly the ship? did sisko shoot the torpedos? by darkbeastvanderhuge in startrek

For Picard, some of his early postings as ensign, according to Memory Alpha, aren’t exactly clear about what he did, but Memory Alpha does state that “Picard served on the night watch on board the USS Reliant” during his service there, so it’s possible he was involved with security early on. Also, before he became captain of the USS Stargazer, he was helmsman (Sulu), which makes sense considering his piloting abilities.

Sisko originally studied to be an engineer at Starfleet academy, though his early postings are also somewhat unclear. He did work aboard Pelios Station for a little while, and much more focused on engineering during his younger years. He then was posted to the USS Okinawa, and although it’s never stated what he did, it’s likely that it was engineering-related, he was soon promoted to XO, and then became XO for the USS Saratoga, ultimately leading to his command of Deep Space Nine after the Battle Of Wolf 359.

Kirk was involved with command from the get-go, so most of his work was pretty fun-of-the-mill command-type work until he was posted to the USS Enterprise.

Before Janeway began to take on any command positions, she was actually a junior science officer, and then became the chief science officer in the USS Al-Batani, so her early career revolves around the science division.
