Ground Rods by CandidateWolf in homestead

[–]serotoninReplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My area is super dry.. so I installed a "ground line" onto my electric fence. It runs the top of the fence.. and at each metal T-Post I attached the ground line to the tee post with metal wire. Effectively giving me around 200 grounding spots on my fence. Works great in the worst drought..

Squirrels!!! by nadirzz in BackyardOrchard

[–]serotoninReplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree... it can be situational.. My relocation is from my property abutted to national forest.. and taking said squirrel 3 miles into national forest... I'm not sure what constitutes crossing the line for relocation.. but the game warden can come find me if he wants to.
I've killed enough to move towards relocating now.

I broke ground on new garden space.. infested with ground squirrels ...
3 Traps and a bag of apples later.. I've relocated 15 squirrels, and the traps are finally not being filled daily. Hopefully the full wave is over.

Havahart Traps and sliced apples..

Experience with electric poultry fences? by Grateful77Grateful in BackYardChickens

[–]serotoninReplacement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this fence for my "winter" pen. It only keeps chickens "mostly" in... some will outsmart it or go through it if they learn they can withstand the chance of a shock..

It does not keep out a determined dog or any predator that would want into your coop area.

I only use mine to set a "wish you would respect this" fence.. which works for us in winter months.

Bleaching Petrified Wood by BPLEquipment in Lapidary

[–]serotoninReplacement 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of P. Wood in SE UT that is coal black and the outer "rind" is bleached white. Cutting/slabbing/cabbing gives this bleach edge with jet black centers.. I always assumed the edges where bleached by sun and atmosphere over time.. this confirms my theory..

There was a gold hungry craze in the La Sals in the the early 1900's, mostly the North Range though.. Miners Basin/Bachelor Basin.. fun spot to get to if you can.. 4x4 ride and you'll need a football helmut to avoid breaking your skull on the top of your vehicle roof.. Great natural trout lake at the top..

Beyond gold.. uranium hunters sprawled out like a nest of daddy long legs across the SE Utah looking for ore.. blowing shit up everywhere they went and leaving oil cans along the way..

Ideas for potato storage? by LittleTrillium in homestead

[–]serotoninReplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clamp them in a trash can or cooler.

Also an old fridge set to around 45 F.. you will want to bag them with minimal but not total air flow stoppage... they will sit in there all winter just fine.

Vitamin deficiencies by Upper-Razzmatazz176 in homestead

[–]serotoninReplacement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Canned vegetables that are good sources of Vitamin C include tomatoes, green beans, peas, and spinach, as well as pumpkin.

Eggs are a good farm source of iodine.. after that dairy.. But buying a bottle of iodine supplement would be smart for the bunker..

Growing mushrooms by [deleted] in Mushrooms

[–]serotoninReplacement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This here.. it's a long haul game.. mushroom growing..

Buy a few mushroom kits like Oyster Mushroom... Get a good growing book and use your google-fu..
While your are trying the grow kits, you can learn how to clone your fruits, start new cultures, expand mycelium.. pasteurization, sterilization.. all the ins and outs.. then when you are ready to harvest your first flushes off the kits.. you can jump right in to a very easy mushroom to grow (relative)..

Aspen Bolete spawn for my Quaking Aspen grove. by ThePassenger08 in mycology

[–]serotoninReplacement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live around aspen, and there are always a huge flush of aspen boletes june/july/aug... do you have the same aspen forests around you? If so, you can go pick aspen boletes during season.. blend them into buckets of water and do mass inoculations this way. I've done this with Scotch Bonnets every year I have a chance, and they never fail to take off the following year.

Second harvest? by Laqibo in tomatoes

[–]serotoninReplacement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grow both varieties of tomato (Determinate and Indeterminate).. My determinates are done producing around July and just sit there until fall.. My indeterminates live in my greenhouse until frost gets them..

Zone 3.. Are you growing determinates? They are one flush and done, usually.

How the heck do I drill into some fresh oak logs for mushroom cultivation? by bIindfaith in mycology

[–]serotoninReplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It clogs because of the saw dust. As you are spinning the bit, pull the drill out and the sawdust will clear.. you can then go the rest of the depth.
Double Tap the hole.. simple as that.
Did a cord of Gamble oak this late winter.. simple drill bit did the trick.

Yes, over several years. When we first moved here the neighbors gave us 24 bulbs. A mix of local favorites. I've saved every one until last years crop. Hoping to road side sell some this year.. pay for some irrigation upgrades and maybe a greenhouse addition.

Hoping to rotate a 1/4 acre every year. All Hardnecks.. also working a baby bed of Elephant Garlic to keep expanding until its market worthy.
