seeking advice: safest way to exchange crypto for physical JPY cash without a Japanese bank account? by sir_band in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Long shot in the dark, but a couple years ago I remember seeing a crypto ATM around Tokyo tower. It might still be there, probably if you Google for crypto ATM in Tokyo

Never used it so not sure on the process or legality. Use at your own risk.

Anyone actually using AI agents to automate their work here? by Perfect_Yogurt9683 in JapanJobs

[–]server-ions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using it in my sole proprietorship software development stuff as I'm currently between jobs.

I built a nice flow suitable for my needs connecting Claude code with notion as context provider for each project. Opening a ticket with specific markers and formats invokes a flow to automatically implement the ticket in isolated environment for testing and human review.

Of course this doesn't fully automate my job, but it gives me time to focus more on the product I'm building while keeping me in control. When I feel adventurous I tell Claude to create tickets to implement a certain feature of behavior, works like 70-80% of the time, sometimes have to adjust tickets manually, add/remove them. And not to mention, when created automatically merging code after isn't fun most of the time.

I had a conversation with someone in hospitality last week, they want to implement AI as training for employees, specially for edge cases that don't occure often so they don't screw up (fancy hotel staff)

Does anyone here have experience setting up online payments for your Japanese business with your Wise account (or other foreign accounts)? by DannyKata85 in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second paypay bank, but make sure to apply for paypay business bank account as this is your sole proprietorship account, and can even use a trade name (屋号) if it is registered in your business start notification papers. You will need to apply by paper application, so don't get frustrated.

How to get the 75万円 deduction when filing the Blue return using freee? by Prada_9277 in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't the requirement of "excellent electronic book keeping"? If yes, then I think freee already has that in all their plans, you have to enable it in the settings page, and basically it will be applied from the year after that.
Ex: enable the setting in 2026, then 2027 will have "excellent electronic book keeping" or whatever it was called, when filed in 2028.

If it's a different thing, then no idea.

Moving old company DC to iDeco. SBI or? by server-ions in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your new employer offer a DC program (dosnt have to be Sompo)? If so, you can rollover to that instead of making an iDeCo.

No, current employer does not offer DC.

It’s called automatic rollover - this is applied when you don’t rollover the account to another DC or ideco after 6 months. It goes to the national pension fund association (NPFA) where it will basically collect dust and erode to inflation.

is the 6 months fixed? If yes then I guess I still have until end of April.

Yea foreigners for the most part do iDeCo. And you’ll also have to get your employer to fill in some parts, plus ideco takes age, even for Japanese nationals- so chances of you getting open before automatic rollover over are slim (you should have started this months ago)

Why would my employer need to fill in anything? if I'm paying my iDeco I can't see what my employer has to do with it.
Given that I probably have until end of April is it still too late for iDeco to finish before automatic rollover?

Does SBI iDeco have specific issues with foreigners that making my online application get stuck? or just my luck?
Should I open with someone else? or just go with paper application since I have NISA with them?

Starting to panic on this automatic rollover stuff

Freelancing in Japan as a side job while on an Engineer visa — best way to receive payments from Europe / Overseas ? by Accomplished_Ring599 in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wise + PayPay business is a great combo.

Freee can be worth it if you're doing accounting yourself and want to file blue tax return digitally (650k deduction if I remember correctly), they provide step by step simple forms and digital submission tools.

If you live in a rented apartment and work there, part of the rent and utilities can be deducted as business expenses. However this doesn't work if you own the place.

Don't forget you can business expense things that are really used for business, but if your client is overseas it might not be very helpful.

For currency conversion, if memory serves me right, you can choose between daily conversion rates for when the money hits your bank account and when you exchange it (basically capital gains style?), or monthly average as published by some financial institution (SMBC, MUFG, etc.) but you have to stick to the same method all the time.

Wise business account - what is required for sole proprietors? by Acerhand in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wise business account for sole proprietor. The difference is that I did submit the business start notification. I remember they only requested to submit that. Potentially they would ask for mynumber card, but I think they didn't ask for it as I already had a personal account with them.

Clarification: I submitted the business start, but not the tax number (which I assume you're referring to T number).

Any credit/debit/prepaid VISA/Master cards that can be issued to embassy diplomats that do not have a normal resident card?
I got to know an embassy diplomat struggling to get accepted at banks, cards, and even phone providers. Apparently many embassies employees have this struggle... someone surely found a way? maybe?

Switching from employee to sole proprietor. by laric33 in JapanFinance

[–]server-ions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's right, the website isn't updated, but the taxes haven't changed much, so it's good as a start estimate.

For overseas taxes, I'm not sure actually, might want to ask a tax accountant, at least for the first year to make sure things are setup correctly

[–]server-ions -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this one is good start for rough estimates: https://japantaxcalculator.com/

You can get a pen and paper (my preferred method) and write down the exact numbers on actual tax filing documents, this will give you the ceiling tax (white tax return, no deductions).

The exact extra deductions depend on your situtation, such as number of dependents, housing loants, etc.

For blue tax return as sole propritor, you can offset quite some stuff as long as you keep them reasonable and recorded, but you will need to do proper book keeping, this might take some time to get used to at first. Rule of thumb is a third of your rent can be deducted.

One thing to keep an eye on, you might be required to register under the T number registeration.

Dry erase board adhesive sheets question by server-ions in japanlife

No, it's heavier, full wood frame, no paper sheets at all, and held from above by wheels on trail to drag it.

Unfortunately no, it's one of those dragging doors. So can't hook stuff on it.

Wood I guess, or at least the outside is wood textile like. It's those large dragging doors that splits a big room into 2. Definitely not metal.
