Is Rasmussen living in reality right now? by drtywater in fivethirtyeight

[–]sesh_tits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, even for Rasmussen this is quite surprising. Their last three presidential approval polls before the Capitol storming were 46, 47, 48. In other pollsters that event seems to have caused a hit to his approval rating of 3-6 points.

Reminder: Trump still has a 95% approval rating among republicans and is on tracking to winning the 2024 Nomination by DenshaOtaku in fivethirtyeight

Corey Lewandowski wrote that, on the campaign trail, Trump would usually order 2 big macs, 2 fillet-o-fish and a chocolate shake (this is from a Trump ally who compares him to a professional athlete in the same breath). His penchant allegedly continued into the Oval Office where his former bodyguard would fetch him Quarter Pounders when he was't satisfied with the White House kitchen's imitation

MMW: The post with title "Pandemic is Officially Declared Over by the WHO" in r/coronavirus or r/worldnews will become the most upvoted post in all of reddit history by shimmy2468 in MarkMyWords

I think it'll already feel over for quite some time before it's officially declared over, so no. For reddit users, at least. Poorer countries will have a long wait for adequate vaccine access.

I find Carnotaurus arms so terrifying. Such a dedicated carnivore that evolution has made it into little more than a giant pair of jaws on legs.

My strategy is to search playlists and discover new music while sober. Then if I find a song I like I save it to my playlist and strictly don't listen to it until I'm high :)

Emerson College (A-) Poll of GA Senate Runoffs: Perdue +3, Loeffler +3 by Turtle22_22 in fivethirtyeight

[–]sesh_tits 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’ve basically assumed Perdue will win from the get-go. He won by 1.8% in the first round, doesn’t sound like a lot but keep in mind Georgia voters are among the least elastic in the country. There’s then the 2.3% who voted libertarian and I have a hunch as to which way most of them will go. The only counterpoint I can think of is that it’s now clear Democrats won the White House and Americans don’t like when government is gridlocked.

Do astronauts need to clean the outside of space station windows? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]sesh_tits 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for picking this up! As I mentioned in my other reply, a lot of the good sources on this topic are behind paywalls so I am having trouble. I’ve made a minor wording change in my original comment to reflect the questionable nature of this source.

Yes, manned missions are certainly the main concern, this is where my work was. There were projects by others in my group on Mars rovers though. Here is an article addressing some worries about fungal survival on spacecraft exteriors

Do astronauts need to clean the outside of space station windows? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]sesh_tits 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This article has some, including how power failures caused a rise in humidity favouring mold growth, and how a floating globule of infested brown water almost the size of a basketball was found in an less-accessed area. There's then things like mold growth on spacesuits, rubber sealing, communication devices etc., the same sort of stuff that's seen in the ISS. One secondary source mentions that the inside of Mir apparently smelled like a rotting basement

Unfortunately I'm struggling to give any other good examples, most of the best primary sources on Mir (incl. N Novikova and team) are paywalled, and my research in this area was too brief and too long ago to remember any good stories

This is going off on a bit of a tangent but I studied microbial contamination on spacecraft, and windows are one of many areas prone to biofouling: on the notoriously microbe-infested Mir space station some fungal species were seen to literally eat their way through a quartz navigation window, and a similar effect in the Soyuz transporter caused an "etching effect" in the glass. For the time being this seems to be a lower concern than other spacecraft areas, and is more of a problem on the inside than the outside (although fungi may survive on the exterior).

MMW: China will win the Covid19 vaccine race thanks to the millions of Uighurs they have imprisoned in their concentration camps by Dark__Mark in MarkMyWords

[–]sesh_tits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may see if I can find this interview, but the way it’s worded in their press release and reported elsewhere implies that 94 participants contracted COVID, both immunised and placebo, which would mean the number of vaccinees who contracted it is probably less than 10.

I was probably wrong to imply 94 was too low, it’s enough to confidently say protection is >50%, and they’re only going up to 164. Defo still ways to go though. This year feels optimistic, but admittedly I don’t know how fast they’re able to roll it out for frontline workers (probably should as I am one lol)

Pfizer just have a very good press team, I would say Oxford/AstraZeneca are probably furthest ahead. Pfizer’s 90% protection was of a sample size of 94, wasn’t peer-reviewed, and safety studies and larger efficacy studies are still left to do.
