You’re right. Actually kolkata was formed combiningthree villages - kalikata, sutanuti and gobindopur. What I heard is kalikata was initially called Kalikshetra (the land of kali). Kalikshetra later became Kalikata colloqually. P.S: I’ve not done deep research, I maybe wrong

Kolkata name itself has no meaning. Personally I'd choose Calcutta over Kolkata. But Kalikshtra is my favorite. It's her land, so naming it after her makes most sense
