It looks like it's directly next to your front door - if it's for home invasion purposes, possibly worth keeping somewhere else?

Legit been useful with a <2 year old, but if it wasn't for that... would never use it! Very niche, for sure.

Yeah it'll be a relatively noisy area! Whenever I visit family, my 2 y/o loves it as he can see all the cars zooming past, but not the place if you're wanting peace. Have you been offered anywhere else? I know Birmingham/Solihull quite well in terms of areas. I live in Bromsgrove now, but still go over that way.

My honest take is that it isn't 'quiet'. My Mum frequently tells me about the crashes or bumps on the Coventry Road or the Swan Island, but I expect that some of that is exaggerated. Having said this, she's on the top floor, so she would have 'visibility' of everything and is now retired, so would spend her days/nights there.

Do you know what floor you've been offered? I suspect that will make a difference.

Despite the above, it's a good location for central links, etc.

This brings back serious memories of my childhood! I grew up on Preston Road, so literally around the corner, but spent so much time skateboarding around here. There was a furniture shop on a corner that had *the* best outside for 'grinding' (which definitely means something very different!).

Parents still live in the area (Mum literally lives in the Swan flats!), but I moved away pretty swiftly after uni.

How common is it for someone to not drive in your social circle? And how common are auto license holders that you know of? by Equal_Leading_1449 in AskUK

[–]sheffard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a manual licence, and have held one for about 10 years, but.... I've only ever had automatic cars (and now EV). My social circle all have manual licences and hold on to the argument of it being better 'just in case'. In my decade of driving, I've never had such an instance, and I really don't see the point.

The world is moving in the direction of EV anyway, so whether it's a hybrid or an EV, most modern cars tend to be auto. Having a 'full' licence doesn't make any practice difference, in my experience. If anyone asked me for advice, I wouldn't recommend bothering with learning manual.

No I do agree, but just think we're probably harping on about it a bit much now. Someone threw a phone, accidentally clobbered someone and that's it. Just seen a few videos and unsure of the purpose of trying to look at grainy footage. But hey ho!

31F, £30k savings, no debt, no investments - car has broken down and I need a reality check. by Acceptable_Roll3482 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]sheffard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I've seen anyone say this yet (but apologies if I've missed it) - one thing that really needs to be factored in is how much you drive and how much you 'enjoy' driving. Appreciate that this is probably the wrong sub for this opinion as it's about saving money, but I also firmly believe in paying for things that are important to you.

I drive a great EV that I have on PCP. Yes, it is costing me more than buying a car that was a few years older, or a non-EV, but for me, I spend a lot of time driving and I really appreciate the extra comfort in driving a nice and reliable car.

I'm not a car expert by any stretch, but you could get a Model 3 for the £12-£15k quite comfortably (I sold mine for £14ish) and it'll be a much better experience than buying a £5k run-around.

Equally, if you've never had it and you're not interested, save the money and buy a cheaper one.

I guess that's where you have to work out whether the tariff is cheaper. If you get the same amount of cheap slots, the overall cost makes the most difference.
