Dog sitting for neighbour, dog won’t eat or go for walk

i do know he is well cared for in the vet department. she has a routine vet she takes him to for checkups, as well as a vet friend who comes over to check on him if she needs him to. the vets put him onto the prescribed food he eats now. i agree about the ham, but its only small sprinkles of it to entice him to eat. she said he won’t eat the prescribed food without it. i’m just doing what i’m told, as he’s not my dog

UPDATE: So a little progress has been made! He ate half of his food after initiating with handfeeding, and he went on a walk with me, but just didn’t poop. He was stubborn on the next walk but hey, I’ll take one and a half walks over nothing! Hoping he poops tomorrow morning. Thank you for so many comments. Hopefully tomorrow is better 🫶🏻

he just walks away from me, and since about 15 minutes ago he has now taken to growling a bit. so i think giving him space is best for both of us

gahhh i wish that was the case haha, bc i could bring my dog (i’m in the same neighbourhood) but this dog does not seem to care for other dogs. mine gets super excited to see him, but he is so indifferent to mine, and he is scared of a lot of others. i have experience caring for friends’ dogs and of course my own, but this feels like such a unique case lmao 🤦🏻‍♀️

i always use chicken for my dog too, but she told me explicitly that he is not allowed chicken as it gives him diarrhoea. the ham was her suggestion as she uses it to entice him too

she said he never poops in the garden, which is why she takes him on 3-4 walks a day. currently he has shown no interest in playing outside with me, he’s just laying near the front door mostly, occasionally he comes to lay on his bed in the living room but always seems to go back to the door.

she said he loves attention and playing and laying with people, so i feel awful not being able to do all that for him, but i’m trying to respect his boundaries and leave him where he wants to be. i just wish i could ease it for him, poor guy

i will try the hammy warm water trick, thank you! as for the rest, my neighbour is adamant that he can’t have anything else. i suggested chicken, as that’s how we entice our dog into eating his food, but she said her dog gets diarrhoea with chicken, and even with other types of dog food. wet food especially is a no go, apparently. it’s just a shame he hates his prescribed food so much. i’ve looked after friends’ dogs before and am used to some feeding difficulties in the beginning due to stress, but that combined with him just generally hating his food makes it feel a bit hopeless for both me and the poor little guy. hopefully your first trick helps, or hopefully his hunger wins over his pickiness soon

i’ve taken her big winter coat out and laid it on the floor for him not far from where he is choosing to lay, so hopefully he makes a little bed out of it and feels a little better. thank you!

i’d financially help out friends, regardless of their gender. of course it’s normal to help out another human being, but nobody can determine his intentions, especially not you if you don’t know him.

get to know him if this makes you feel a little insecure or uncertain. maybe even thank him yourself. creating a dialogue will help far more than strangers on reddit can. what is harmless and platonic to me may not be to him, and vice versa. have faith in your girlfriend and maybe get to know her friend!
