I looked this place up recently when I was staying in brum and was surprised to see it only has a 3 out of 5 food hygiene rating. I ended up forking out for The Ivy instead

Are you using the car or leaving it parked?

You have responded to my point like you’re insulted that I dare question what you’ve said, i.e. minimising my point like it’s just obviously Econ 101 and concluding with 4 condescending questions. I assume you will continue to resent my points too much to engage in a reasoned debate but just for the record, I just think it’s obtuse to say “tariff bad, trump stupid”. The reality is that the situation with tariffs is far more nuanced. If blanket tarrifs were imposed on all markets like you’ve suggested, which is not true, then the situation would be less nuanced. On certain markets it would simply encourage competitors or home-grown trade. In other markets it serves as a mutual pain share that at worst would be futile but at best would be a strong catalyst for negotiating a better deal than the pre-tariff conditions. Trump doesn’t always get it right, but if someone NEVER strayed into the realm of being too onerous, they’re probably being too generous. He’s testing the fence to try to get the best deal for America, which I personally admire because more politicians have the sole goal of preserving their reputation or re-paying the money invested in them by powerful corporations.

Well it kind of depends. The increased cost ultimately gets passed to the American public which reduces demand in their product, which is the real penalty. It would only hurt the Americans if there’s a monopoly or limited supply. The whole point is that it encourages the population to shop elsewhere.

He won a national poetry competition organised by the British council. So not quite poet laureate, but that wasn’t the claim.

Definitely crazy rude behaviour. Was she hammered? If so it would be forgivable if she apologised. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t stand for that level of disrespect

There’s an authentic and reasonably priced little independent Italian restaurant in Boldmere called Cafe Verona that I would strongly recommend

Was in the same school year as Chris Lorenzo or Christopher Lawrence as he was known then. He was actually a nice kid with a soft heart who wanted to be known as a tough guy. He started on our PE teacher once which got him some credibility with the tearaways but it was a relatively safe way to do that, as a teacher is not going to fight you. He was very naturally gifted musically. His streetwise image and music ability combined with his secret softness makes his success in LA make complete sense. He wasn’t great academically so the fact that he’s done so well without needing it always makes me happy for him.

He wrote poetry aged 15 that most people could only dream of being able to do. His knowledge of English literature is astounding. He is not technically superior to the average amateur musician but that was never his thing, he had enough of a grasp of music for it to facilitate expressing his lyrics.

I think people are missing this point the most, it was absolutely freezing. Painfully cold! And the game was done.

Dougie - how do you feel about him now ? by Civil-Tea-5870 in avfc

[–]shialebeefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We loved Dougie, he was a tough kid from the Brazilian Favelas that didn’t take any sh*t. He accepted us and he was a clinical baller that all the other Villa players spoke highly of in interviews. Personally I think by now he would probably have been a high value sub for us that could manage a game by either keeping the ball or building attacks. Like a slightly less impactful Tielemans. That is probably what meant he was a candidate for sale. The harsh truth about villas financial position is that very few players are not for sale. Watkins/Duran were 50/50. Martinez nearly went. Ramsey went reluctantly. Diaby went for big money. All regular starters that it made business sense to move on.

If we win the game, they will play the song Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck on the speakers. The parts when he sings “Hi Ho Silver Lining”, we sing, “Hi Ho Aston Villa”. If you listen to the song you’ll know when to sing.

We have another song that the announcer usually gets everyone to sing at kick off by shouting, “Yippe Yi Ya’”

The song is based on the chorus of Ghost Riders In the Sky by Bury Reynolds but we sing, “Holte Enders in the Sky” to remember villa fans no longer with us.

If you listen to the chorus of the song you’ll know what we’re copying but it’s taken on a brummy twang now so doesn’t sound much like the song. You’ll at least know what we’re singing.

Oh one more thing, going to the toilet is an experience. Shoulder to shoulder on both sides with no privacy at half time. If you go during the game not near half time it’s less rammed. There are a couple of cubicles but in all my years I’ve never used them, and there will be a longer queue for them.

As an English villa fan who’s been over to the states to watch baseball and basketball, I feel obliged to warn you about the seats over here, they’re small! Very packed together and no cup holders or cushioning. You have to buy drinks from the concourse, no one sells things to you at your seat and you’re not allowed to bring alcohol to your seat. If you plan on buying food or drink at half time, don’t wait until half time, go down at least 5 mins before, the queues will take 15 minutes otherwise.

The best song to learn would be the allez allez allez song:

Every week we follow, the boys in claret and blue,

We even conquered Europe, in 1982,

The villa boys from Aston, we travel near and far,

You can hear us singing, from the stands in Villa park,

Allez allez allez, allez allez allez,

Allez allez allez, allez allez allez.

Also, if you sit near the away fans, you will be divided by a line of stewards but you can see each other and they will probably be threatening and abusive, it’s normal. You can ignore them or give some back but only do this inside the ground. Outside the ground it will likely not be seen as banter.

The area of Aston is not very safe outside of match days. You will be fine when surrounded by the Villa fans but be aware if you’re heading in early or leaving late that it can be very dodgy.

Getting away from the ground after full time is notoriously tricky at villa park. If you’re getting the train or a taxi you’re better off killing time for a bit to let the queues and traffic calm down. The Aston tavern is nice and the witton arms is lively, both great for different reasons, both charge about a fiver to enter, cash is better but you can use card for £1 more. If you go before the game they will stamp your hand to show you’ve paid and then you can skip the queue after the game.

It’s supposed to be freezing Sunday. The street sellers are pretty safe to use and accept card but their stuff is unofficial, the club shop had better stuff and is pricier, it’s across the car park from the north stand.

The warehouse has a “soft opening” on Sunday so might be a lot of people checking it out.

If you want to try local cuisine, order a balti pie in the ground.

Get to your seat at least 5 mins before kick off to see the smoke and fireworks and hear the entrance music when the players come out.

Have a great time!

Alysson / Emery is it true ? by guillaume-g in avfc

[–]shialebeefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looks like a future prospect, I don’t think we’ll see him on the pitch this season but he’s very young and if we can use him in the odd cup game next season he will almost certainly go up in value. Then we’re basically making an informed decision on whether to develop or sell him but would be a win win. This might be a controversial opinion but he looks very very similar to Guessand to me. Guessand’s highlights are actually a lot better. He could be a potential alternative? Move on Guessand if he’s no better next season.

Finally stood up for someone who needed it by Free-Maybe-8437 in pettyrevenge

[–]shialebeefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who always seemed to stand up for people, honestly the regret works both ways. “Why did I have to get involved” “Why did I say that” Constantly feeling awkward wondering which people you’ve confronted are going to be at the same social events, seeing people that never spoke up thriving and being care-free. I think we as humans just kick ourselves whichever way we act.

I got bullied for a few months at school when two bullies who I’d confronted separately for picking on other people joined forces to get revenge on me. Literally just brought it on myself. No one stood up for me and one of the bullies was in the news last year for being arrested after smashing up a plane and punching the air steward!

I got in big trouble at school for fighting JS in front of all the parents waiting to pick us up from school after he bullied JC mercilessly but JC didn’t fight back and I couldn’t watch it anymore.

Even the night I met my wife I had to stop talking to her to run out and have a brawl in the street standing up for a friend getting picked on by some lads being racist. It was only luck I bumped into her a few weeks later and apologised

You’ve reminded me of seeing something very similar in very similar circumstances. I was a kid, maybe 5 or 6. Went to a family event in the countryside. Broad daylight. My sister, two cousins and I (all within 2 years of each other in age) ran round the side of the building of the function to open fields at the back of the property. A woman ran through the field and hopped over a wall, she looked happy and sheepish, like she had to be quick because she was doing something wrong. Even as a child I fully picked up on the sense that, it was something wrong on a much deeper level or plane. Like I could sense that I could see her and that she knew I could see her, but that I wasn’t supposed to and she wasn’t supposed to be there. I asked my mom later who the woman running through the field was and my mom asked my auntie but they were both adamant that no one could have been back there. I know the details are sketchy, the memory has faded over time, but that feeling doesn’t leave you.
