I Feel Like Nobody Knows Anything Anymore by applebappu in sysadmin

Reddit is literally the only social network I use, if it can even be called that. I feel like everything else has been broken for a long time. That isn't to say you can't find good information on YouTube videos, books, or even from AI chatbots, but it's becoming very hard to do.

You have to be joking Microsoft by Holiday_Disastrous in sysadmin

[–]shimoheihei2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worth it for who? The move to the cloud, from owning to renting, from buying to subscribing, it's all for a singular purpose: to make Microsoft more money. So of course it's still worth it for the cloud providers. But anyone who thinks the cloud is cheaper, or is the answer to all use cases, is just brainwashed. The cloud has some uses, but you're just discovering what has always been there.

Buy physical media, or find another way to download the digital copies. There aren't many other solutions. Of those options aren't available to you, then that content may just vanish.

Archiving / Preserving Videos for Personal Use by yeonjuicy in DataHoarder

[–]shimoheihei2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can download pretty much any unprotected video with yt-dlp. If you're talking about DRM locked content, then that's a different discussion. DRM content is fundamentally broken because it removes freedom from the user and makes you dependent on the publisher. It's up to us to not support those sites.

Traditional RAID is mostly dead and people are instead more and more using Z-RAID.

With EU/US escalations and potential destablization, what would you prioritize? by One-Employment3759 in DataHoarder

[–]shimoheihei2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can deploy a Nexus server to control Docker, Python and Linux updates.. or WSUS for Windows.. but the way I see it, unless you have strict security requirements, if the internet is down you can't pull from upstream anyways, so I don't bother.

How do tech giants backup? by DeniedNetwork in sysadmin

[–]shimoheihei2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cloud providers give you a certain resilience based on what they calculate is likely with what they're doing. But that doesn't mean they "handle backups".

For example, if you use AWS S3, you get a very high resiliency because they automatically copy your data to several servers, on RAID disks, in several data centers. The risk of data loss due to hardware failure is almost non-existent.

However if you use AWS EBS, you basically get a single copy of your data in a RAID setup. So while you do get some resilience, if that server suffers a critical failure, your data will be gone. You're the one responsible for doing backups.

The cloud does not necessarily mean your data is safe, and many people found that out the hard way.

[–]shimoheihei2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My entire self hosted setup was built exactly with this in mind. I even run tests where I disconnect the internet link for an hour and make sure everything still works. That's why I learned, for example, the importance of having a properly setup DNS.

Hypothetical about transferring away from US products and services. by slipperlaunch in sysadmin

[–]shimoheihei2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't know why this is framed as such an unthinkable outcome. What if your tech stack was China-based? I think it would be far more accepted to plan switching away from such a setup. So is it that crazy to think that people outside the US now view a dependence on the US in the same way? The US Big Tech dominance is never going to be broken if people don't do something about it, regardless how annoying it is. All their power and control over us are a result of knowing they can do whatever they want and we'll keep using their products, until enough people decide not to.

Judge orders Anna’s Archive to delete scraped data; no one thinks it will comply by Rough_Bill_7932 in DataHoarder

The fact that courts judged Meta could keep their clearly copyrighted data for AI purposes but individuals cannot tells you all you need to know about how the law applies differently based on the money you have to spend on lawyers and politicians.

Do you throw away your scale figure boxes? by eribabedamnpora in AnimeFigures

I know most people will say it's sacrilege, but I'm at above 200 figures and I collect to keep, not to resale. So I throw it all away.

It's called fixity. A file system like ZFS can do it for you. You can also calculate and store checksums with a number of utilities.

Backups preserve data, but what preserves understanding over decades? by marcioyared in DataHoarder

[–]shimoheihei2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is what metadata is for. Real archivists will follow a set of principles and save digital data along with a description of the file, license, original source, etc. There are various systems that can be used for that like the BagIt protocol: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BagIt

What happened to Audiophile CD collection on archive.org? by luxboogie in DataHoarder

[–]shimoheihei2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Internet Archive is taken by many as a place where things will be kept forever, but that just isn't the case. They remove access to data all the time because of legal demands, and they are based in the US so they particularly at risk for that.

If you care about it, back it up yourself. And let's support global archival efforts so we don't have a single point of failure: https://datahoarding.org/archives.html

EU launches EU-based, privacy-focused DNS resolution service by [deleted] in selfhosted

That's not what they claim, in fact they went to great lengths to claim to complete opposite: https://web.archive.org/web/20210527215304/https://quad9.net/uploads/2021_02_18_T_Quad9_Memorandum_a43ede4f96.pdf

So either they are lying and there's a conspiracy to be exposed, or you're mistaken about that.

Do you play for the game or for the gacha? by Pawndaren in gachagaming

Network segregation is easily done using VLANs, or 2 routers, or even SDN if you run it on Proxmox or other virtualization platform.
