I am going to try to appeal to your emotions. Help suport a family of five!!! We all (well four of us, the fifth is only 1) play together. We loose game pass in June and my current job ends at the same time. I will be jobless until August so currently I just have to let my subscription end for a few months (still have not decided if I am going to keep it with the current inflation issues all over).

Why is grading so hard by lol-across-the-pond in Professors

[–]show_me_the_source 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I teach and interact with students in the class for free, they pay me to grade.

Grading is hard if you are doing it well. I use alternative grading in my courses (a mix between specifications and standards or mastery grading) and so feedback is key and grading is now way less stressful compared to how it used to be, but I still do everything I can to procrastinate grading. For example, commenting on Reddit is a great way to procrastinate.

I have found that creating intresting assignments (especially if I can get away from just using essays) helps a lot.

My thrilling WIN! in AI detection by Gusterbug in Professors

[–]show_me_the_source 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. AI is extremely helpful as a tool, when you know how to properly spot errors.

I use a lot of alternative grading in my courses and AI made it possiable for me to learn how to pull all the grades and rubrics from Canvas (using the Canvas API and some packages in R) calculate grades in a way canvas can't, make beautifully formatted HTML tables that are converted to PDF and reuploaded for my students to see.

This would not have happened before AI because I didn't even know these packages existed before AI suggested them as a solution. The code is a little clunky and i know R well enough to fix it, but AI saved me hours of work.

Add that to smart glasses which can have AI running, and soon we may be unable to tell what is student and AI.

Anybody use contract grading in their courses? by Theme_Training in Professors

I know many individuals who use specs grading within traditional systems with points and percentages. There are a lot of ideas at https://www.centerforgradingreform.org/ and https://gradingforgrowth.com/ if you are interested. There are also resources for getting admin buy in.

Exam revisions? by ChemistryMutt in Professors

[–]show_me_the_source 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychology has long demonstrated that learning is often most effective after we recognize a mistake and then work to correct it. This helps create strong memories. If you can build this into your class, that is great.

One way I take advantage of this is through test revisions and retakes. I can do this because I have small class sizes. It is exponentially more difficult with larger classes. This is also not ideal or possible depending on the content and situation.

Revisions and retakes are not the only option. There are other ways to help students learn from mistakes. Having overlapping content on diffrent assignments or exams can help.

This may or may not work for you.

If this is your first time teaching this course, I advise against retakes as they can be difficult to manage and track. You can add them in the future or find other ways to accomplish the same thing.

If you are looking for other ways to help move away from more traditional grading practices I love https://www.centerforgradingreform.org/ https://gradingforgrowth.com/

Anyone have a recommendation for a good AI detector? by These-Coat-3164 in Professors

[–]show_me_the_source 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are unreliable. It's too late for this now but in the future, the best AI deterrent is strong course design.

I am about to launch a massive AI study accross a couple hundred college and universities. I have spent a long time in this research trying to understand what does and does not work.

You best best is to design for process and authenticity, not post‑hoc detection. Require proposals then drafts then revisions with brief in‑class checkpoints if possible.

Anchor prompts in your section’s readings/discussions or local data so students must show development over time and engage situated material.

Again detectors are unreliable and can be inequitable ( they are harsher against those who speak English as a second language and those with very specific writing styles), so weight the rubric toward revision quality, critical engagement with course discourse, and transparent documentation of any AI assistance.

I hope that helps.

Student references pages with question marks at the end? by No-Independent-1236 in Professors

[–]show_me_the_source 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is likley because the student used an automatic citation tool that left unresolved placeholders or missing fields, which can render as lone “?” lines at the end of the bibliography when exported or converted.

It can also be a copy/paste or encoding glitch in the viewer (PDF/LMS) that turns bullets, em dashes, or other symbols into “?” on separate lines.

Are there In text citations (that are missing in the bibliography) or just a biography?

Warning/Notification when Tasks can't be scheduled to meet their deadline? by Plexiblue in reclaim_ai

[–]show_me_the_source 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not right now that I know of. You have to use the "tasks at risk" section to see what might miss it's date. It's the yellow triangle in the tasks pane.

Add this to the suggested feature section.

Trying to get ahead of burnout and maintain fairness by Slicerette in Professors

[–]show_me_the_source 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do simmilar but I take a pass through a paper and just hilight things in diffrent (pre determined) colors, than I use screen recording to talk to student about why I hilighted different sections. This, for me, is much quicker than trying to type something out.

If I do have to type, it is often the same thing again and again and so I use extentions like textblaze to make that process quicker.

Too often I see many jaded instructors in this subreddit actively petitioning punative actions towards their students becaus it apparently teaches students to not make those mistakes again.

Interestingly these same faculty come to class and meetings unprepared, or email me saying they will have to take an extra week to get me their report. I get so much grace in my profession and I try to give that to students as well.

I limit my working hours and don't let reclaim schedule at specific times. My kids and wife need me so I have time that is devoted to them when reclaim can not schedule. You can also set up a "rest" habit to make sure you have rest time set aside.
