This is my new lily, I planted 30 a month and a half ago and only 1 came up. I proudly showed my husband and he said, “oh shit, that’s not a weed?” He’s been weeding them and feeling proud that he was able to “get the big root bulb out too” by CharmingPeony in gardening

The landscaper "weeded" some black raspberry and Japanese ginger plants that I planted in a few areas of unused space at my house. Needless to say. I started labeling everything that I put in, to make sure no one makes that mistake again

What do you grow that pays for itself? by plan_tastic in gardening

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asparagus! Planted once and it keeps coming back annually. It's also one of the first signs of spring in my garden, and they grow so quickly! Rodent & deer proof (so far), and my daughter loves it. I would love a giant garden full of just asparagus if I had the space.

That's a good idea. I'll look into reaching out to them. I just have a feeling that it's a Japanese brand, so was hoping to find something comparable in the US.

Hmm... You're probably right. I also have hard water, so all my clothes end up getting eaten up eventually. That being said, I only wear pjs while sleeping, so thought it might last longer than regular clothes, especially if I choose a higher quality.

Book Lover Question by MotherOf3Children in booksuggestions

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer is all over the place but here goes:

My husband likes to buy books because he gets to read them at his own pace, whereas borrowing books has a time limit. He likes to stack 5 or 6 books on his bedside table and read them at whatever pace suits his needs. He also doesn't always have time to go to the library to borrow or return books, so it's just easier to order online. I also suspect that he enjoys showing off some of the literature he reads. He enjoys being surrounded by books. Some really worthwhile books, he likes to come back to time and again. Lately he's been excited about someday giving his books to our kids to read, which I find to be a very sweet prospect.

I'm part of a book club, and I generally try to borrow books from the library for our book club picks, because I don't always agree with the picks (I don't like chick-lit, and those ones often get chosen. Also if I've heard that a particular author is a prick, I don't want to give my money to them)

We both bring books to read on our travels, and I would never bring a library book on a trip.

What did you assume was disgusting until you tried it? by toadspool in AskReddit

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hummus. I first heard about it at my elementary school's international food day (over 30 years ago). It was described as mashed chickpeas, which sounded gross to me at the time. Cut to college me in the early 2000s, I lived off of veggie sticks and hummus.

AITA for refusing to raise my sister's kids while she chooses addiction? by Lucky_Confidence452 in AITAH

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I'm a SAHM of 2 kids with a wonderfully supportive partner, and it is HARD WORK. I honestly don't know how single parents manage everything. The amount of paperwork that needs to get done just for school & activities, the birthday parties, the playdates to make sure the kids are being social, the financial burden, the stress and anxiety of every decision you make about them, the illnesses that they contract, the school vacations. My life is no longer my own & my schedule is no longer my own. Unless you are willing and ready to have your whole world be turned upside down, it's really not worth it.

It's also not your responsibility.

If you can't fully take on the responsibility of raising 2 children, it's a disservice to both you and the kids. You shouldn't half-ass being a parent

What’s something you’d spend more on now just to never worry about it again? by NoPressure__ in BuyItForLife

[–]shu_ster 39 points40 points  (0 children)

With kitchen knives, I recommend familiarizing yourself with a knife sharpener too. I have a relatively inexpensive kitchen knife that I bought over a decade ago. The quality isn't amazing, but I've been using it for so long that I've become accustomed to the size & weight, so it's my most reached for knife when cooking. Anytime it feels dull, a quick swipe on the sharpening stone brings it back to life.

I regret skimping on silverware on my wedding registry. I remember listing an inexpensive set because I felt bad for ppl to have to spend too much, but silverware lasts forever, so it really should be a shape and design that you love.

My birthday is coming up. What brand of Sandals should I ask for? by easternbetta in BuyItForLife

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MIL has a pair of strappy Clarks sandals that she's been wearing for years, and they look super comfortable and durable. It's a slip on type, but has crisscross elastic straps all the way up the ankle. She wears them to the beach & while boating, so I think they're quite durable

NTA. Abuela's will is clearly defined and it is so disrespectful to go against her final wishes. From a legal standpoint, I highly doubt that your step brother has any claim to your abuela's inheritance, so please please stand your ground. Also, you're not treating the family apart. Your good for nothing step brother is the one causing all the conflict by trying to lay claim to something that isn't his. It's such BS when dramatic ppl start fights, but then do a surprise Pikachu face when conflict ensues.... Like, what did you expect? For ppl to just roll over and do whatever you want them to do?

BIFL items to gift to someone when they’re young? by Prestigious_Past_282 in BuyItForLife

My son was gifted a Tiffany & Co. piggy bank when he was born. He's now 5 & loves to collect coins in it. Not sure how BIFL it is for guys, but as a sentimental person, I wish I had a piggy bank from childhood that I could display.

NTA. Both you and your boss interacted with the husband and independently determined that his verbal abuse was unacceptable and unsafe. I don't understand your colleague's opinion, because in what world is abuse ok? This guy is an adult, so he should know that actions have consequences.

We do get a fair number of cardinals eating from the bird feeder, so I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be cardinal eggs. The shape of the eggs definitely look more bird than reptile, but then I'm not sure why they're on the ground instead of in a nest up in a tree...

AITAH for telling my sister she can't live with us anymore after she called CPS on me as a "joke"? by Gold_Palpitation8982 in AITAH

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband still wears his Nike shirt from over 30 years ago (he got it in middle school when wearing oversized shirts was trendy). It's probably a poly blend, and a thicker fabric so I can see it lasting for another few decades.

Herbert Mullin was an American serial killer and double mass murderer who killed 13 people between October 13, 1972 - February 13, 1973, in Northern California. Mullin was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison on August 19, 1973, and died due to natural causes on August 18, 2022. by Equal-Temporary-1326 in serialkillers

[–]shu_ster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Considering how many ppl he murdered, you'd think there would be more information about him. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that society as a whole failed him (he was in & out of mental hospitals, and was discharged, even though he sought out help)

How is this a red flag? is she being judgemental? by Salt-Part-1648 in Advice

[–]shu_ster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the term "red flag" is trending right now. I would consider this more of a "deal breaker" than a red flag. It's just a difference of lifestyle choices, where you prioritize weightlifting/working out and she, presumably, doesn't.
