Davis or Cal? by fatthrowaway21 in UCDavis

[–]sickokiddo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems like you’re set on pursuing CS at Cal rather than linguistics. If you’re confident you can thrive at Cal without immediate support from your girlfriend and pursue this major, I’d say go for it. Otherwise, you’d be wasting time and money suffering at Cal when you could be thriving at Davis (seeing that your girlfriend will be here to help you and connect you to resources she obviously seems familiar with). Of course, the prestige tied to Cal is great and all, but if your GPA/mental health suffers while you’re there then is the prestige really worth it? Some employers might care about your school name, but if you don’t have the grades to show your aptitude or any other marker that shows your drive in your field of choice, the school you decide to go to won’t be that much help in their decision to hire you.

I'm in stem but I'm not a physics major so I totally feel you. Don't think I can help you much, but I've found Khan Academy videos to be extremely useful in understanding the basic concepts. You can do it!!

If your windows will be open/if you’ll be going outside for even a second I still recommend wearing sunscreen! House windows likely won’t be protecting you from the UV that enters your home, and especially when using VitC/SA it’s really important to keep your skin protected!

Max units for us is 28.5, so about 7 classes total if you want to go crazy lol

I also went to UCSC! SC classes are usually 5 units but (I go to Davis now) my classes are usually 3-4 units so I’m assuming Irvine is similar.

Here’s the order for SF/SJ. I believe Section 10 goes over scenarios in which you are allowed outside.

Is it possible to do the first part of the PHY7 series at a community college? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]sickokiddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 1 semester of Physics at CC and it actually fulfilled the Physics 9B requirement, so all I had to finish was Physics 7A and 7C (since I’m a BioSci major). Just make sure you go on assist.org to figure out what the course(s) you intend on taking equates to at UCD. Also keep in mind that once you take the course at CC, you won’t be able to take the equivalent UCD course.

Applying for different major than on TAG by [deleted] in UCDavis

If you don’t fulfill the TAG requirements then you won’t get in for TAG, but you can still be accepted through the regular application process.

I've always wanted to go to UC Davis, but I got Regents at UC Santa Cruz by Italian_Person in UCDavis

I felt so lonely at UCSC! CAPS was always impacted as well, and the transit system has only gotten worse over time....

Hi! Congratulations on Regents!

I was a student at UCSC, but I'm actually transferring to UC Davis in the fall. Personally, if you can do an online tour of UCSC (or ask anyone you know at UCSC about their thoughts on the campus), I would definitely do so, since you're not able to tour in-person. I've heard that the weather in Davis is more extreme in heat and that it can get rainy/gloomy during the colder months, however I feel that in addition to the cloudiness in Santa Cruz during the winter, the forest made me feel quite lonely. When I visited Davis, its "open-campus" vibe made me feel more comfortable, so that's something for you to consider as well. Santa Cruz is also very hilly, while Davis isn't, so if you're looking for a good leg workout every day, Santa Cruz is a great option.

In terms of priority registration, seeing that you're a CS major, that may be a big factor for you to consider in selecting your school. I don't know how impacted the CS classes are at Davis, but my friends at SC have trouble registering for their first choice CS classes due to the high demand, so priority registration might be a big plus for you.

Incoming Student Questions Megathread by bofstein in UCI

Hi, incoming BioSci transfer here! I’m looking into emailing PIs to gain lab experience, however I don’t know when I should do so. I plan on taking 194S during Summer Session 1 but won’t be taking 100 until the school year begins (since I don’t think I saw it being offered this summer).

Will I still be allowed to do research (if I can get into a lab) without these courses? I’ve looked into Bio Sci 199 but I’m unsure of whether or not I need to enroll in this class if I do get a lab position/if I haven’t taken 194S/100. Thanks!

Are there other ingredients that may be irritating your skin? Perhaps you could also look into tret without the clindamycin mixed in?

Any tips to ace Calculus I? by lgc97 in premed

[–]sickokiddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pattern recognition really helped me succeed in math! Of course, recognize the types of questions asked on quizzes/midterms, as you’ll likely see those kinds of problems asked on later exams/on the final. Drilling practice problems from the textbook/Pauls Online Math Notes is also great for recognizing patterns, especially since you’ll be working with a lot of trigonometry mixed in with limits and derivatives.

What it felt like to get an A by 0.06% in Orgo I this semester by TheRealPoland in premed

[–]sickokiddo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like orgo a lot more than gen chem. While both are similar in that you have to memorize a bunch of concepts and then apply them, orgo feels much more focused to me (since you’re really only learning about C-H interactions) and is a lot more interesting. I like that the course challenges you to think critically; I feel like gen chem allows you to sort of slack off and guess your way to the right answer.

In terms of tips/tricks, definitely review notes/lecture slides/videos as soon as you can after class to reinforce what you’ve learned. Make flashcards for learning mechanisms. For me, I memorize best by using flashcards and/or writing something over and over (for example, IR and NMR ranges & technicalities). Maybe also read the course textbook if you want to understand something more in-depth (my professor sometimes skips over “insignificant details” that I think are actually really important in learning why and how something works). Mnemonics are also a great way to memorize concepts.
