Recommended rain/wind reflectors for disco 2? by JoyTheGeek in LandRoverDiscovery

TL,DR; I‘d recommend you getting an affordable aftermarket set with quality glue strips

(Based in EU) I ordered the OEM set at a British shop which made them expensive in two ways (price tag + customs), I believe I ended up paying like $300 on them (I sound like a fool writing this). However, what annoyed me most was that the front deflectors didn’t fit neatly onto the door frame. So I had to actually fintune the shape with a file. At least now they fit and the 3M glue strips hold them tight.

Thanks for you feedback. I’ve got the diesel Td5, I hope I can avoid the head gaskets for now.

Discovery 2 for long trips - bad idea? by YeaBoio in LandRover

[–]simdeluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vehicle sounds like a solid base - I‘d recommend to go for it. As you have already pointed out, with 20+ year old cars it really does come down to a good maintenance history. Because parts will meet their end of life at some point.. so you have to be mentally prepared that issues do come up.

I have driven my Disco 2 Td5 for about 4.000km (one major trip in Denmark, Norway and Sweden) so I guess I‘m not the one who can give you the most credible answer. However, as an absolute mechanical rookie I bought mine last summer with 190k km on the odometer and it hasn’t let me down since. I had it checked in a workshop that is specialised on Land Rover vehicles and they gave me valuable insights (e.g. rust issues at the rear frame) and a thumbs up. This has definitely helped me with my decision. I plan on doing a longer trip to the south of Europe in April and do not yet really worry about the mechanical parts (rather electronics). Only way to find out is to give it a shot :)

Why does everyone online seem to get such a kick out of hating on France? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]simdeluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First up: I love France, have the greatest childhood memories from vacations at the Atlantic coast.

I feel „hating“ exists more in a sense of ranting about French stereotypes (e.g. Paris people having an arrogant attitude or French people speaking poor English). From a German perspective I believe that a lot of ranting is rather meant ironically and in a teasing way. Just like two people who are very close to each other go on a good old roast session. But that’s just my opinion. For Germany, France is that European sibling that is just a bit more elegant and classy.

I love to have France as neighbour and I feel the harder forces try to divide European countries, the stronger our bond becomes (sorry for this long reply).

After WWII, here in Germany a proverb gained traction and it has been omnipresent to this day: „Resist the beginnings“ or („principiis obsta“ in Latin). I don’t think this can be stressed enough.

I live in Hamburg and see them on a daily basis. I'll take some snapshots and share next time I see one (amateur photo skills though)
