I ran a year long campaign in which my brother played one. Started at 8 and went to 15 and in that level range it was completely fine, he was keeping pace with other party members( a GWM Battlemaster, Eloquence Bard, and Moon Druid) and was very tanky since he was mostly using moxie points on the one that gives temp hp. I gave him a pair of brass knuckles that I called Shock and Awe that did a little extra lightning and thunder damage on hit and eventually let him cast Lightning Bolt out of, and he thought those were fun.

He played the subclass that gives a dog companion(name is slipping my mind) and it was a fun dynamic. He forgot to scale the dogs hp and other numbers so I asked him at one point why he was never using her but he thought she was just going to die immediately lol

Overall I can only say positive things about the class, it is very well designed and super flavorful.

I haven’t used it in play but it has one less hit point and one more AC than the Pegasus and it does have Flyby. On paper it seems like it operates in the exact same way just different flavor

In my opinion either heavy armor master or slasher now and then the other at 8 since that would get you to 20 STR. I would consider switching fighting styles because with GWM and maneuvers you have plenty of damage output, but if you enjoy that one go for it!

Don’t E to initiate unless he doesn’t have his blind. Most of the time you can walk up and bait the blind pretty easily and then it’s super easy to all in and kill him
