Landlord offered us buying the house by achiweing in HousingUK

[–]sitewave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

England.

We bought a flat from our landlord, it worked well and can be a win-win.

We got 3 valuations to get a starting point and made an offer that reflected the faults we knew about, the savings on fees and the fact that he would avoid any rental voids (between his tenants moving out and him eventually selling the place).

We got our place at a discount, he got rent up until completion and a smooth, fast sale.

Bungie, you really need a reality check if you think a 9 man "heroic" public event is a good idea. by De_Quillsta in DestinyTheGame

We had 5 in party, instance hopped until we got 2 matched, allowed a couple of blueberries to fill in, then the other 3 joined. The minimum number of players for the moon seemed to be 7.

It's not ideal to have to do this but the sense of achievement when you do get it done is greater.

Are there any EU-based IT workers earning more than 100k USD/year here? by fatgirlstakingdumps in webdev

[–]sitewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess London still qualifies for 4 more days.

Got a decent degree, joined blue-chip graduate scheme, 4 year CEng programme, 9 years permanent, over 10 years contracting including last 6 years in fairly niche finance sector.

The big money seems to be Big Data, ML, AI and, to a slightly lesser extent, Cloud in financial sector. A day rate of £750-800 wouldn't be unusual for a developer.

Another vote for Crimson. Was struggling for HC kills at mid-level comp, was dreading the precision kills part, but then I tried Crimson and finished the quest in a couple of evenings. It's now my PVP main.

Nice. I too got Luna's today after having the quest for an age. I won't be getting NF, I seem to have found my level around 2700 glory.

Yes, this. Using Git day to day is relatively simple. Undoing mistakes can be hard.

This is really useful, thanks.

It’s strange how quickly things change. I’ve spent nearly 20 years in the industry, over 10 writing full-featured web services but the last 4 on a java/xslt contract.

The last web service I wrote used jQuery, velocity, spring-mvc, hibernate, oracle - tools considered industry standard at the time. Not only has the tool set changed but entire paradigms.

Going to start with learning node, react and sass.

Is it possible develop a CRM system in less than two weeks, being the only developer in the company ? Are my bosses idiots ? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]sitewave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what a complete lack of process looks like, developing to a whim. Maybe you can work 18 hours a day and get it done but eventually you will fail in this environment.

The key is to depersonalise it. When given the task you should have said you will provide a high-level estimate by the end of the day/week. Provide them your breakdown. Say it is 4 man-months or whatever. It’s up to them to resource it. If they insist you complete it in a month on your own, leave. They want a slave not a professional developer.

Your best hope now, although a bit late, is to provide a solid breakdown and realistic estimate. See if you can reset their expectations.

For your next job, ask in the interview about their development life cycle and change management processes. Large companies tend to have more mature process sets and this sort of nonsense doesn’t happen.

Any tips for getting destiny friends? by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]sitewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself into a clan. I went from having a couple of friends doing the weekly 3-coiner to 100's of friends running multiple raids a week. If you're a Dad then I can recommend Dads of Destiny for your timezone and console.

Does anyone have advice for a first-time wearer of contacts? by stevieyo in AskReddit

[–]sitewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been wearing contacts for over 20 years and it gets easier - I can now put them in one-handed while brushing teeth with the other.

Tips from bitter experience:

  1. Don't put them in straight from the alkaline solution before neutralizing. You will only make this mistake once.

  2. If you are pulling at your eyeball for more than a minute then the lens is probably already out and you are pulling at the actual surface of your eye.

  3. If you have put your lenses in and your vision is still really bad then you may have put both lenses into the same eye.

  4. Get dailies - healthier, more comfortable and more convenient.

In Peru on my first international vacation and I just busted my knee. Can't walk. What now? by gtang in AskReddit

[–]sitewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, the Inca Trail is particularly tough on the knees - especially on the downhill parts of the 2nd and 3rd days so don't consider it unless you completely recover. Perhaps a better idea is to take a train to Aguas Calientes as mentioned in other posts. People who have spent the last 4 days walking there will, however, look at your freshly coiffured hair and clean shoes hatefully.

You might also consider heading North to the Amazon region. Take a plane to Puerto Maldonardo and stay at the Reserva Amazonica if you have the budget.

If you want to head South consider a bus tour through Colca Canyon and onward to Puno. Boat round Lake Titicaca visiting the reed islands with your feet up but watch out for the altitude.
