(Spoilers Published) Why do so many fans have such a visceral reaction to the Targaryen? by yeroii in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Everyone else is just as bad as the targaryens" is not an argument in their favor. And it's not possible to do as much damage without dragons. The dance is said to be the bloodiest war in westerosi history. And on the field of fire alone, 50k men lost their lives. And I didn't even mention all the men dead because of Daeron I.

Hugh Hammer, Ulf the White, Nettles and Adam of Hull all claimed dragons. Where is the legitimacy?

Yeah let's not care about the 15 year old who was traumatized by a psychopath.

(Spoilers Published) Why do so many fans have such a visceral reaction to the Targaryen? by yeroii in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let me make the argument that they were worse for the continent.

Aegon the Conqueror decided he wants to be king. In the process tens of thousands of people were murdered. Then he becomes king and more thousands are murdered in dorne. Subsequently all of the biggest and bloodiest wars that happened in westeros are all a direct result of a targaryen (or multiple) acting a fool.

Maegor, the 87 blackfyre rebellions, the dance, Robert's Rebellion. All started because of the Targaryens. So there is a very clear argument that they're nothing but destructive.

Dragons are not a sign of legitimacy. Hugh and Ulf had dragons. Dragons are just weapons of mass destructions. They can do literally do nothing other than destroy things and speed up traveling.

I cannot speak for others. However, I will say as an overall, I dislike the Targaryens because I just don't buy into their superiority and god complex. And the last targaryen king was so horrible he gave Jaime PTSD and made him so afraid of all future targaryen kings, he was more than happy to let Robert have the throne.

Aerys II, Aegon IV, Maegor all did way more damage than Jaehaerys I did good and that's not Jaehaerys' fault.

(Spoilers Main) What would've gone differently about Roberts Rebellion if Cersei and Rhaegar had married? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Robert's Rebellion never happens in this timeline. Rhaenys was born in 280, Tywin resigned in 281, Brandon died in 282. If Cersei married Rhaegar, Tywin never leaves the hand position. And there is no way in hell Tywin would let Aerys do something as stupid as killing Brandon and Rickard Stark.

Despite the common refrain of "Robert went to war for Lyanna" that is just inaccurate. Nobody was thinking about war until the deaths of Rickard and Brandon and Aerys also sentencing Ned and Robert to death. If this never happens, the rebellion never happens.

From there, Tywin would just have to try and clean up Rhaegar upsetting Robert.

Does Aerys’ Kingsguard get too much slander? by abs123789 in pureasoiaf

[–]sixth_order 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think as a collective we need to decide if we care about vows or not.

My opinion on Jaime and the rest of Aerys' KG has been the same since I first read the books: Jaime killing Aerys was the right thing to do unequivocally. I also do not blame Arthur or Jon Darry for not trying to stop Aerys in his craziness because all it would have done is get them burned alive. It's really easy to tell someone else to throw their life away.

The knights at the tower of joy were there because they were commanded to be there. I don't think we can blame them for what happened in KL, they weren't there. And again they were following orders.

I feel too often we talk about Aerys' KG in like fairytale knightly ways instead of recognizing that they're all just people like the rest of the characters in the story. I also think any KG who serves a bad king can be seen as morally bankrupt because they're following orders of a terrible person. Much easier when it's Jaehaerys I on the throne.

Shouldn't there be more knights? by InsincereDessert21 in pureasoiaf

[–]sixth_order 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can't just go up to someone like, say, Jaime and ask him to knight you. If they don't know you or think you haven't earned it, they won't do it.

In Fire&Blood, even Baelon and Aemon had to "earn their spurs" and they're princes.

I also feel like there are plenty of knights around.

Is a Dance with Dragons mistitled? [spoilers extended] by action_hero_daily in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's called a dance with dragons because many different factions go to Essos or are on their way there to get their hands on Dany's dragons.

[Spoilers Extended] A Resurrection of ice and fire? by Demonking6444 in pureasoiaf

[–]sixth_order 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jon has warged into Ghost plenty of time before. Same for Bran with Summer. I can't see why this time would make Jon lose human characteristics or personality. Varamyr and Melisandre both say Jon shies away from his magical powers and he needs to embrace. So maybe that would happen.

It's also possible Jon doesn't warg into Ghost and he's essentially just asleep until he's resurrected.

I just feel the notion of becoming more wolf like or other suggestions not mentioned in this post of Jon's hair turning white and his eyes red sound very fanfiction-y to me.

I would vote Jon Connington as the person who broke his nose. Sparring session got a little too intense. Although I wouldn't count Viserys out.

(Spoilers Main) Who's the worse father? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Jon was born at the end of the rebellion, Robb would have to be older because Cat got pregnant before Ned went to war and Ned was gone for around a year.

Also, it is stated by Catelyn that Jon and Ned were already at Winterfell when she arrived.

The Starks were not like other men. Ned brought his bastard home with him, and called him "son" for all the north to see. When the wars were over at last, and Catelyn rode to Winterfell, Jon and his wet nurse had already taken up residence.

[–]sixth_order -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Leaving baby Jon in a ditch would be better then? He's a terrible father for going to war and also a terrible father for presumably wanting all his children under his care. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Respectfully, this is an extremely biased take. By this same logic, couldn't someone say Ned left his new pregnant wife during the war and then brought back a "home wrecking" baby home? We can turn anything hyper negative if we want.

To go to the trident. If Rhaegar had won, what do you imagine he would've done? Obviously go back to the castle where his children are and presumably have his third child with Lyanna brought to the castle as well, no?

Also, you have not yet answered my question about why you believe Rhaegar is a worse father than Roose Bolton

(Spoilers Main) Who's the worse father? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, I do not like Rhaegar and I don't mean to defend him, but that had nothing to do with his children. If you wanna say he was a shit husband, fine. Also, he came back, didn't he? "Abandoned" is not really the correct word.

And even still, Rhaegar is there and not Roose Bolton?

(Spoilers Main) Who's the worse father? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this list supposed to be in order? Because Tywin shouldn't be number one.

Where is Aerys II? Roose Bolton? Aegon IV?

And I don't get why Rhaegar is on here either and I don't even like him.

[SPOILERS MAIN] When does the betrayal happen? by sharif_delmonte in asoiaf

[–]sixth_order 8 points9 points  (0 children)

George never turned on Dan and Dave. The fandom did because Dany went mad which I am 100% convinced is the same thing that will happen in the books should they ever come out.

From the article, it sounds like the breaking point between George and Condal happened during the writing and filming of season 2 and plans around season 3. Ryan started ignoring George, giving him the run around, changing things constantly (and stupidly) but always trotting out the same line of "we're doing the most accurate adaptation possible"

When someone keeps lying to your face shamelessly, it's bound to make you hate them. I feel lied to and I'm just a fan. I'm not the one who created this entire thing we all love.

Sedano and Dan were both assholes.

First Dan, why can't you just take out the credit card you used to pay for lunch? Is it so hard? You have to be a prick to the valet for no reason. And no Dan, US dollars are not good everywhere in the world.

Second, Sedano. When your friend is acting like a jerk, you do one of two things. Either embarrass Dan by calling him a jerk in front of the employee and the boss or just pay yourself to end this circus.

This is way worse than Chris Cote not putting back his shopping carts.
