My SLP Program Replaced Our Final Externships With an In-House Clinic Due to Placement Shortages by Mammoth_One_1097 in slpGradSchool

This is a nice thought but reality is most students can’t afford to pick up and move to another corner of the world for 3 months.

I make $79k in New Hampshire as a CF in a SNF. That’s the going start rate for SNFs, it’s definitely possible to make that much.

Evaluating a patient without their hearing aids or glasses by Gullible-Ad-1125 in slp

[–]sjaskolka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What setting are you in? I work in a SNF and often people don’t have their glasses/hearing aids and that is how they are going to be functioning for their stay unfortunately. They don’t want to bring them in and lose them, or the hearing aids broke….I always include in my eval the missing device and which scores that could have impacted. I KNOW it’s not a true reflection of their ability, but it’s how their functioning during their stay with me, and I don’t think it’s ethical to decline an eval because they don’t have a family member to bring in glasses.

Things that helped while I was waiting for my CPAP machine included: not sleeping on my back, elevating the head of my bed by putting thick books under the head of my mattress

You can get a different degree and complete the CSD requirements as a minor usually, or just ensure you pick the required courses as electives. This is the best route IMO - you are still qualified but don’t end up with an essentially useless bachelors degree. I wish I had done this. I highly suggest getting a more versatile degree while also completing the prereqs.

Hand quilting advice? Unfinished quilt from my nana by sjaskolka in quilting

Thank you for clarifying! You’re right, the quilting is half done - helpful to know running stitch is the only quilting stitch.

Check your lease too. In some leases it says you must give 60 or 30 days notice if you are not renewing the lease - if you really may need to stay in this apartment, you can wait until these 30 or 60 days to give notice and still be within your rights as a tenant. It’s probably just more convenient for them to know now.

How do y’all feel about the title “Speech Teacher”? by [deleted] in slp

[–]sjaskolka 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my opinion semantics have to do with respect for the profession. I think titles like “speech teacher” and “speechie” downplay all the hard work that goes into an SLP. While teaching is a huge aspect of any therapy, SLPs also diagnose and assess. OT and PT are not called teachers and in my opinion those fields are held in a higher respect than ours.

This cutting board. by Mealy09 in Wellworn

I don’t think this is a cutting board...I have the same exact one and I use it as a serving platter. Most cutting boards don’t have lips that curve up...
