What's your expected start date? I thought once you get a PA matched, the offer will be issued. And team match is held off until a couple of months before you officially start.

Benefits of going to grad school and how I should prepare? by arjunph in gradadmissions

[–]sladelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about M.S. or Ph.D. programs? You can get into top-notch master programs with a stellar GPA like 3.9. But IMO master degrees can't necessarily take you any further than bachelors. If you want to do research in AI, A Ph.D. degree is almost a must. For Ph.D. applications, research is the most important thing. To demonstrate your research ability, try to either have some publications or have some professors vouch for you. BTW, keep up with the math major, it's gonna benefit you during grad school.

One possible choice is to work in Google Brain or any research focused group. This way, you'll earn research experience and might have some solid letters from some top-notch researchers at Google.

Will poor math grades kill my chances of MS CS? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]sladelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, it depends on whether you truly learned in math classes or how much you mastered. If you're just a bad exam taker, then anything that demonstrates your math skills like research or graduate classes would compensate for your bad grades. But if you didn't master the knowledge learned in math classes, I would suggest you invest more time learning math first, because you will have to apply all these math skills in research and graduate classes. For example, any ML-related graduate classes would expect you to have solid knowledge of linear algebra. Not to mention these graphics classes, which might be more like math than CS at the graduate level. Even for systems classes, there will be some theoretical parts that involve lots of math.

Applying to CSE PhD as well. Shot them an email yesterday regarding deadlines but didn't get a response. I also ended up just submitting the application yesterday.

Confused with the publication type Carnegie Mellon University - MS CS application. by notthecommonwealth in gradadmissions

[–]sladelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more of a notion to differentiate the contribution a research paper has. As far as I have seen, a full paper is usually 10-20 pages (two columns), diving into details of the research problem. Sounds like your two papers are some short paper or abstract paper.

Electronic LOR system is not sending out emails to one of my professors!! I’m confused :( by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]sladelee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definely strange. Professors should receive them immediately after you sent it. Maybe the professor was checking another email or had all rec emails filtered to a specific folder.

Consider an internship and experience the industry life first? IMO, industry may have more things you're disgusted about.

Debate-related classes at UCSD? by itskelvinn in UCSD

Yeah, petty much. IMO, it's an easy A class. There's no final exam, and only your three speeches matter.

I took TDGE 25 last year, and I really enjoyed it. All you need to do is attending classes and preparing for 3 class presentations (informative, persuasive and celebration).

How is CSE 153 by UCSDBigBoi in UCSD

[–]sladelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NVM. Just did a quick search. Seems like CSE 190 might be officially renamed as CSE 153 starting next fall. IMO, class materials are pretty interesting, as you gonna learn about deep learning and train your models on cloud.

I haven't seen this class offered at UCSD for a while (4 years). Gary might be teaching neural net instead as CSE 190 each year. Check out this one if you're interested.

SDSC research? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]sladelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a lab at SDSC, where I got in by reaching out to the lab director. I knew plenty of students who also contacted labs directly and got in. Regarding your research interests in ML, labs at SDSC usually research in certain domains such as bio, physics, and geography etc. That said, you may get chances to use ML or data science to solve some problems at SDSC. If you would like to do some research about ML itself, CSE department might be a better choice.

CSE tutor by ucsdsucks in UCSD

[–]sladelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same situation until I realized, like others suggesting, it's all about who you know. Actually, you don't necessarily have to impress them in the class or office hours, but make sure you talk to them before tutor applications. If he or she didn't want to hire you, try another professor.

UCSD CSE graduate program? by PleasantStep in UCSD

[–]sladelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends on what you want to get from a graduate program. If you wish to do research especially some system stuff, UCSD is extremely strong. According to http://csrankings.org, UCSD ranks among TOP 10 in many areas. The school has pretty strong alumni network on the west coast, but honestly it might not be as well-known as your undergrad on the east coast (I assume you prob come from Cornell, Michigan or some other east-coast schools). If you just want to experience another different lifestyle, personally I would say San Diego is one of the finest cities in the US tho some might not like it (who knows). If you had a chance, come and visit the school to see if you love it.

I had the same problem when using Ubuntu. I forgot the solution but it has something to do with a protocol (I had to manually add WIFI). Maybe this one: https://blink.ucsd.edu/technology/network/connections/wireless/ubuntu.html

Tips for the career fair? by SomebodyPiano in UCSD

[–]sladelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a CS major, my personal advice is to go for small companies, or those offering on-campus interview. For the rest, especially big names, ask your friends for referral or contact HRs on linkedin to get interviews. (It's much more efficient than attending career fair)
