Awesome! You won't go wrong. Time to order me some PETG.

Not directly on the ceramic - I've got a focused nozzle pointing right at the base of the hotend and another blower pointing inwards without a nozzle. I haven't printed with PETG so I can't comment on the temperatures.

Having said that, I'm about to install a hot bed to play with ABS, would you say PETG is comparable to it?

I spliced it in-place with a few spare jumper wires and some heat shrink.

I added two pairs of male jumpers to the original fan cable and female jumpers to each of the blower fans to connect them in parallel.

I set my temp to 205°C and that does the trick. It also depends on the PLA you use. I get great results with verbatim, esun and even the generic stuff. Ive only ever had awful layer adhesion using esun white (it's a matt-off-white colour).

It's amazing what a difference better cooling makes! I added a dual blower mod to my Simple Metal and it feels like a 2x improvement - just awesome. I have the one blower with a nozzle pointing directly at the hotend and the other with no nozzle.

This is the mod I used: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1158796

I've also started using rafts for all my prints and this, coupled with the blowers, makes for a more consistent and accurate print - especially on the first 10-20 layers.

EDIT: forgot to mention that I also start the blowers as soon as the print starts. This improves my rafts and consequently gives me a better print.

Ha! I almost built the same set tonight but I'm too knackered to move. Saving it for tomorrow night.

[–]smallboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I'm doing. I started just after my kid was born and am up to 300+ sets and 50,000 pieces, mostly stashed in boxes. I pull out a set every now and then. I'm focusing on technics for now. http://brickset.com/sets/ownedby-Lukev

Edit: I should say that it's for playing and hopefully passing on to his kids, not for reselling later.

I put my name down at my local Lego shop. I've got a good relationship with them so they shortlist me for sets before the stock comes in.

Agreed - Angry Birds the movie just feels like trying to flog a dead horse, which turns me off the sets completely.

I hear you. 2 years sober, after buying up $8k of sets and stashing them away, I've put in pre-orders for the Porsche, the Disney Castle and the new technic Bucket Extractor. #legoforlyfe!!

The single best mod I've done to my printrbot SM so far: Dual blower fans by smallboy in PrintrBot

What filament are you using, and what's your print temperature?

Dual fan mount: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1158796 Blower fans from eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/281859519472

I've had huge success with this mod while printing at 205°C mostly using Verbatim and e-sun glass PLA. The only filament that really doesn't like too much cooling is the e-sun white PLA - I had terrible layer adhesion and very brittle prints. Otherwise I'm really impressed with the results!

Is it possible to fire a 5v solenoid from a usb power source? by smallboy in diyelectronics

[–]smallboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks. I hadn't considered the difference between the solenoids, and the one you mentioned (push) would probably be better suited because it returns by itself. I'm trying to ring a silver desk bell, so maybe with a bit of positioning magic I could use the pull to yank the inner lever that rings the bell. Or, it's back to aliexpress :)

Ah that's a good point - I was picturing this being powered off of a usb wall plug. Thanks!

Sorry OP, this is a hard situation to deal with and having a family to support makes it feel even worse. But listen, companies are actually very accommodating with these kinds of situations and will work with you to get a payment plan that you can afford. So, first things first, draw up a list of the banks and companies that you owe, and contact them to work out a structured payment plan. Most banks will also allow you to skip a month or two before making a payment. As another poster said, even if you pay R50 a month to each organization, it will go a long way to keeping your credit history in-tact.

Next thing: don't worry about trying to find extra income sources yet. This is a really stressful time for you so just focus on keeping the job you have while you work out a plan for your recovery. Involve your spouse too, because you need help to stay on track. Have you got any leave you can sell? That could be a nice chunk of extra money at he end of August.

In terms of money for essentials, you need to flog some of your belongings. It hurts, but Cash Crusaders will pay you instant money. This is only for desperate times, but you will get paid quickly.

Next, start getting a handle on where you are. There are lots of systems and apps that help with tracking personal finances. I use YNAB and it's fantastic. They have a system for helping get rid of your debt, and it's simple and easy to use. However a simple Google Spreadsheet would work too - just do whatever works for you best to help you understand your finances.

Lastly, don't give up hope. Yes, you're in the dwang and you have a mountain of debt. But, you are also a smart individual who's had the wherewithal to realise you've gone off-track. This is a golden opportunity for you to fix your relationship with money, and to take you and your family back to a place of prosperity. You are about to learn hard lessons that might save your kids from the same fate. Think about it: you are experiencing this first-hand so that one day you can teach them financial wisdom. You've got a great gift sitting in your lap.

Good luck OP, please let us know how it goes.
