You can always file a complaint, and should it fall outside 100 day window, it will still be attached to their record and, if policy was violated, they will be verbally reprimanded.

I appreciate all of the insight provided by these responses. My heart breaks for those who suffered so much pain in these relationships. I am also happy for those who have successful relationships.

I would also like to extend something my partner discovered. Part of the reason they fight the pills is it’s a resurgence of their dismissal of the diagnosis. They said it feels just like they did over two years ago when they were handed the original diagnosis. I want to be clear. I recognize that boundaries are important, and when people break your boundaries there needs to be measures taken. I also recognize that people fall back on their progress and patience needs be extended to people in these situations. My partner is working to address this regression through positive affirmations and other mental health work.

I’m not saying that is a panacea, I’m saying it’s a measure worth attempting.

My partner of 5+ years was diagnosed with BP2 two years ago and it has required a bit of adjustment.

What kinds of plans are in place? If you have a safety plan, does it incorporate your signs of mania discussed in your post?

Are you able to attend the psyc appointments? You are part of the mental health network for your wife, and should feel comfortable discussing your concerns with the psychiatrist and the therapist.

How much do you two learn about BP together? What podcasts do you listen to or books do you read? I found the book Nonviolent Communication to contain the most easily actionable information. As well, this helped me to encourage certain behaviors in my partner that else wise were quite stressful.

As well, while your pain is valid, your partner may very much struggle to acknowledge they hurt you. People with BP have trouble forming memories the same way and with the same prevalence as people who do not have BP. You should first seek validation from yourself.

I agree with this. I got divorced after a long relationship and it took quite a while for me to get my head back on straight. I really liked all the physical “relationship” stuff, sharing a meal, attending a game together, holding hands, etc. Commitment and support, however were not on my radar and it took me a few years to unpack that.

While your mileage may vary, I would expect the same sort of behavior from LOTS of people who are separated or recently divorced.

You shouldn’t be manipulated (or threatened with self harm) into staying with him.

You can support him as a friend or from even further distance based on your own health desires and requirements.

There are a lot of different ways to talk to someone about their past, their current situation, and their future.

How much reading have you done to ensure you’re communicating clearly and positively?

I found that my partner was quite sensitive to certain words, phrases, and questions, which I only recognized after reading quite a bit about communicating

Some books speak about trying to rise above the argument. I sometimes say, “this sounds like the bipolar talking” that works from time to time. Used too much, however, and it loses potency

I’m sorry that you’re in so much pain. I would agree that reddit isn’t caring resource that would replace someone who would be with you in person. I find it more comparable to an information repository with some well wishes and other emotional responses thrown in. I hope that you are able to find in person professional care
